Republican political strategist Mark McKinnon veteran of McCain and Bush presidential campaigns acknowledged in an interview with David Frum that a third-party presidential effort for 2012 was not far off, and hinted at his involvement in one.
In the podcast interview, McKinnon, who was discussing his recent Daily Beast column A Centrist Manifesto, lamented that theres nobody that gets rewarded for bipartisan behavior, [and] in fact they get punished. To that end, he said, there is a very real possibility for a legitimate third party effort for 2012 American voters are so hungry for more voice, and more choice.
While reluctant to discuss the matter much further because announcements are forthcoming, McKinnon did let on that he was at least somewhat involved:
Im reluctant to talk about [how a third party run would emerge] because Im involved with some things that are happening that just havent been announced its way more than gum-chewing. The appetite is there. Part of the problem is that there are some legal problems in the way. But there are some people working very hard to make sure that there wont be those legal hurdles in the way so that anyone who wants to run can run in 2012.
McKinnon suggested that an announcement related to such a third-party effort was on its way within the next few months, by March at the latest.
(snip)
McKinnon remained loyal to President Bush, saying that I fully embrace and believe in the whole concept of compassionate conservatism, and I think we made great achievements in the area of AIDS funding and education reform.

David Frum, go away!
It would draw from GOP RINOs and DemocRAT "centrists."
Should split the left-wing vote quite nicely.
You mean like how Crist is derailing the Dems in Florida?
LOL...
The very same folks who have working so hard to make the GOP into a “third” party...imagine that.
No Barf Alert necessary. The name David Frum is sufficient warning.
However, if over the next two years, the Republican Party shows itself to be spineless and too willing to make common cause with the Leftists among the Democrats, then I will resign myself to being a Third Party man.
The problem is that the RINO establishment doesn't want anything to get straightened out.
They would rather you shut up, turn around, bend over, and keep taking it...and look like you're enjoying yourself!
UH, NO, Davy.....go play somewhere else....we are smarter than you.
Should split the left-wing vote quite nicely. It depends on how aware the average American remains. Obviously there has been a big awakening in the last couple of years... and I'm counting on the people staying awake, and not going back into a bipartisan self-hypnotic moronic zombie-like slumber.
If they stay awake, then yes, a "moderate" 3rd party will only attract demomorons and rinomorons and the rest of us (potentially 55% of the country) will remain united against both the dems and the "moderates".
Frumtards from the Frum Forum keep showing up here to push homomarriage.
They keep getting slapped down.
So it comes as no surprise to me that Frum is sneering at the Tea Party.
Thats sweet, but the article you are commenting on is written by a guy who wants to start a more moderate third party.. But thanks for adding your two cents.
So Frum is a bird-brained Falconer too?
Frumpy Old Party (FOP).
The GOP hasn’t been getting donations, they don’t like ‘We the People” having a voice, it kinda threw them. I had no doubt all along - newt, mitt, the huckster, rove and crew have been working behind the scenes - to maintain their boys club and keep their power.
It’s an ‘Anyone but Sarah’ endeavor. So we can expect someone to come on the scene with promises galore and many will be swept up in the deception. It worked for the ‘rats.
Reminds me of Dick Armey’s Faux Pau Tea Party Group.
Fact: The McCain/Palin ticket was up ++4 to 10 pts. in some polls, days prior to the election.
So rather than helping the GOP, Romney and
TeamROMNEY decided
to attack Gov. Palin to throw Election2008.
The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"Im told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palins people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romneys former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off .hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."
"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"
"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"
"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"
"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"
"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"
That resulted in the 2006 loss (as I recalled).
No, Frum and his little friends can go do whatever they want, but don't pretend they are Republicans or Conservatives.
