The friendly-fire shooting that cost a Long Island cop his life was a point-blank blunder that started when a retired cop with no business at the scene yelled, "Gun," an official said yesterday.
Geoffrey Breitkopf, 40, was shot and killed Saturday by an MTA cop responding to a call at a Massapequa Park house where Nassau police had killed a knife-wielding Satan worshipper.
The MTA officers were assisting county cops with mop-up duty when Nassau County Special Ops Officer Breitkopf arrived in a car with his partner, according to Nassau County Police Benevolent Association president James Carver. BREITKOPF - Slain by cop. BREITKOPF Slain by cop.
As Breitkopf walked toward the house in plain clothes with a rifle slung over his shoulder and his badge around his neck, an unidentified retired NYPD sergeant from the neighborhood -- milling around outside -- cried out, "Gun!" Carver said.
One of the MTA cops tried to wrestle the rifle away, while the other, Glenn Gentile, fired a single shot, hitting Breitkopf in the side, Carver said.
Gentile and his partner were then trying to handcuff the dying officer on the lawn when his hysterical partner ran over and cried, "He's one of us," according to Carver.

That is strange. My case is one of this ex still looking for revenge for things which never even happened - almost 17 years after our divorce. There was a more recent occasion where I could not reach my daughter by phone and it was important enough to drive across town to check as to whether she was at a certain friend’s house. I got a call two days later from someone who’d been told that I “went looking for my daughter with a gun”. The ex tries to use the word “gun” to stir up any kind of trouble for me possible. It has never worked, but she’s too stupid to quit trying.
"... Neighbors, including Theresa Kelly who called 911, said she remembers the man who shouted hes got a gun when Breitkopf and other special operations officers arrived at the scene. Kelly said the man was shouting things, running around, ordering people around.

Thanks...
Well of course he did. You all saw it, right? *wink-wink* *nudge-nudge* Say no more!
“I hope heads will roll on this colossal screw up. Disgraceful police work. I blame the management, the higher ups.”
Probably not, the investigating board will rule it a good shoot. Oh wait, the guy killed wasn’t just an average citizen but one of the privileged few, hmmm give them a two week paid suspension and move on with life.
The story makes it sound as though this all happened at a crime scene where deadly force was used on a suspect. If that’s the case I wouldn’t even think about carrying a rifle into the area.
Bingo, I don't believe a word that a cop involved in a shooting says. This just proves they are blowing people away who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Eric Holder: These are my cops after I lowered the passing scores.
“Sounds like this guy is a bit squirrely.”
Some people just can’t let go. I know folks who will be carried out of their offices feet first.
“The real take away from this is that the cops will INSTANTLY kill anyone with a gun UNLESS it is glaringly obvious that its a cop.”
That is sadly correct. The flip side is that, if push comes to shove, they stick out like sore thumbs.
Why do you think it retired in the first place? Maybe something like a disability or I wonder if the department may have made a recommendation? To me, a retired officer is a regular citizen. Do they have experience? Yes, but no longer arrest powers. IMHO
He killed a man through negligence. Do you think some local DA would think you'd been punished enough? I'm totally sick of double standards for cops.
Try his ass for Manslaughter and toss him into prison for 5 or 10 years.
Well, the messed up part is that even though this LEO was retired, at least in NY and NJ, they still get to carry unrestricted, and are exempt from any NFA laws as long as their on this side of the earth. I often get into “discussions” with my family from LI about concealed carry. The concept is completely foreign to them, unless “you’re a cop, and if you aren’t, you have no business doing so.” They look all perplexed at me when I tell them that one’s occupation has no bearing on them being able to exercise theiry Second Amendment RIGHTS!
Agreed! I have no problem with retired cops carrying since I know one who had a scare five years after his retirement. In another state as well. I think the phrase, “you never forget the officer that arrested you” comes to mind. That being said, citizens IMHO should carry as well. The more you read the crime reports, the more I feel this way. If the government (IMHO) do nothing or very little about illegals, drug cartels etc.. than every person has the right to defend themselves.
1. The victim is a citizen walking toward the scene (with or without a weapon) and the cops shoots him.
2. The shooter is a citizen in his house and he shoots the approaching cop.
Yeah
.it would be VERY different.
