INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Hundreds of marijuana plants were seized by police officers on 4/20, a day celebrated in the drug culture to use marijuana. But when Independence, Mo., police showed up at one man's door looking for marijuana, they found something else.
Independence police found a growing operation Wednesday afternoon: a tomato growing operation.
"What I saw today was not protection," the man told KMBC's Cliff Judy.
"That was harassment, all because of where I made a purchase."
Independence police said the Missouri Highway Patrol monitors stores that sell hydroponic growing equipment, and they use those sales to track down illegal marijuana growing operations. That information is what led them to the man's door.
"The last time I checked, it wasn't illegal to grow a tomato plant, but it makes you wonder," the man said.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Never give a tyrant an inch!
Well, that takes care of the last of America's problems.
The article plays down the point of whether or not the tomato grower permitted his home to be searched.
Just how "polite" would the police have been if the homeowner told them to get lost? How long would it take for the police to determine that he had a broken taillight, or too little tread on one tire, or too much tint on one of his car windows?
If its alright to visit the homes of people who bought hydroponic growing equipment, then it must be alright to visit the homes of people who checked books out of the library on hydroponics. Not so?
How long will it be before the government decides that you need a special license to own hydroponic growing equipment?
It's only the War on Some Drugs which has resulted in marijuana growers using hydroponic equipment to begin with. If legal, the pot would be grown in a patch next to the garage. Very inexpensive and no profit margin to justify violence or corruption.
There was a time before the War on Some Drugs and I don't recall reading that it was such a big problem. The outlawing of alcohol, however, sticks out as a time when gangsterism and corruption thrived.
What part of there was no crime to begin with do you not understand?
Or are you ok with cops just knocking on peoples door at random asking to search their houses?
You need to move if you like that sort of thing... I hear Chechnya is nice this time of year...
Independence, Missouri
Independence, get it?
“Oh, hey, what’s in this s**t, man?”
“Mostly Maui Wowie, man...”
“Yeah?”
“...but it’s got some Contadina in it.”
“What’s Contadina?”
“[PUUUUUUFFFF!!!] It’s tomato.”
“What?”
Well, duh!
If I was free to enter several of my neighbors' homes I know I could find the stuff, too. Do you claim to have no acquaintances who smoke pot? Have you turned them in? Are you willing to build jail cells to hold them and provide the heat, food, and healthcare for them while incarcerated?
Why is it that I can look around and see that the War on Some Drugs is an incredible waste of time and resources, and yet you can't? I don't understand it.
Same reason it would be harassment if they showed up at your house after you bought a gun or ammo.
Is it ok to track fertilizer sales?
Just trying to figure out where everyone’s line in the sand is.
He`d be good to go if he decided he wanted to expand
into a little herb after this.
Was spraying a hay field today with 2-4-D,those M-J plants
were thick all over the field
That bunch of bums joining our property likely will be P.Oed
Three men were in the vehicle, and the officer detected a strong odor of marijuana when he was speaking with the driver, Garcia said.
Police found a handgun in the man's coat pocket, he said. He also was in possession of marijuana and was wearing a bullet-proof vest.
"The officers did an excellent job in this incident that could have turned deadly," Garcia said.
"This guy had a gun and he had a vest on. That gives an indication that he was ready to use that weapon, so much so that he outfitted himself."
More and more people are starting vegetables plants indoors to get a jump on the growing season...more and more people are getting into gardening as produce prices continue to increase. Are these people in for police harassment just because they want fresh vegetables to put on their dinner tables? Someone is going to get killed; mark my words.
So....Let's say the cops are walking by your car and notice you have a radar detector and a GPS on your dashboard and they politely ask to see your GPS logs to see how fast you have been going? Why is that harassment?
How would they prove that you were driving?
“Hundreds of marijuana plants were seized by police officers on 4/20, a day celebrated in the drug culture to use marijuana”
Why is the date of April 20 significant to pot heads?
And we have illegal aliens running marijuana plantations on federal land, in national parks.
So what do they do? Take the war on drugs to the suburbs.
Yeah, like that guy who was hauled out of bed on an AMTRAK train in Omaha by some cop person wanting to know where he was from and where he was going. This is like 2am. No badge, no ID except a wrinkled business card. Was posted here on FR.
Pot smokers are driving up the price of doritos!!!! /s
Not real significance to 420, although it is Hitler’s birthday.
