Mitch McConnell Comes Out Against Rand Paul's Gun Amendment
Reason ^ | May 26, 2011 | Mike Riggs

Posted on 05/26/2011 11:02:08 AM PDT by specsaregood

A senior GOP staffer tells me that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has come out against a PATRIOT Act amendment proposed by Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) that would rescind the ability of intelligence agencies to access the firearm records of American gun owners. According to the staffer, McConnell is also encouraging other GOP senators to oppose Paul's amendment.

it appears McConnell and Reid are doing their best to eliminate obstacles to reauthorization before today's vote.

It's always great when the top Republicans are willing to work closely with the top Democrats to push the Democrat agenda. [/s]

Per an email received...

If you can, please help by contacting Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell at (202) 224-2541 and Senate minority whip Jon Kyl at (202) 224-4521 right now and demand that they stand with Rand on this amendment.

Were I a Congresscritter, I would vote against renewing the overarching bill based on a simple political observation: anything that the Dims support while in power and has the GOP support when they are in power, is more than likely not good for the citizens of this country. If it only gets support because it empowers your party, it is wrong.

Not entirely surprised. But it seems that Reid backed down and decided to let Rand introduce the amendment. And McConnell is picking up the slack by lobbying against it to the GOP members of the senate.

If I understand it correctly all his amendment does is reinstate the judicial oversight and require warrants to go through gun records instead of how they can currently just troll through whatever gun records they feel like.

Calling these people the Progressive Republican that they are is much more damaging than epithet of RINO. It more effectively shows their political mindset.

Reid was just posturing for effect. He knew he would take major heat from gun owners if he didn't back off.

The Patriot Act should die in its entirety, and I hope that Sen. Paul and others vote to end it.

A government that is unwilling to fight a war to victory overseas (and I include Bush as well as Obama here) has NO justification to demand war powers at home.

Well this is what GOA says about it:
http://gunowners.org/a05252011.htm

As you know, Rand Paul’s amendment would exempt 4473’s (the form all purchasers fill out when they buy a firearm from a licensed dealer) and other gun records from the blanket information demands which Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) can make under the 9/11 legislation.

Without Paul’s exemption, it is possible that the BATFE could go to a secret (FISA) court, and, in a one-party (ex parte) proceeding, obtain an order to produce every 4473 in the country, ostensibly because a “terrorism investigation” requires it. If such an action were taken, the government would have a list of every gun buyer in the country going back decades.

This is unacceptable and it is a violation of gun owner protections enacted in 1986 as part of the McClure-Volkmer Firearms Owners Protection Act. The McClure-Volkmer Act spells out the purposes for which gun records can be obtained by a law enforcement agency: as part of a bona fide criminal investigation, a trace, or a routine annual inspection. Sen. Paul’s amendment will simply keep the 1986 law’s provisions in place.

It should also be noted that the records in question deal with persons who already underwent the (unconstitutional) background check and were allowed to purchase a firearm. Once again, the dangers of a background check system (which presumes a person is a criminal until proven otherwise) are highlighted, as efforts must constantly be made to keep the government’s hands off the list of honest gun owners.

Rnad had been filibustering like Mr. Deeds Goes to Washington, trying to let the whole Patriot Act lapse, but both Reid and Republicans headed him off at the pass. So then he came up with the Amendments to protect gun owners and now he's tied them up in knots, for now.

Please call these useless pieces of crap and protect your rights!

Contact Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell at (202) 224-2541 and Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl at (202) 224-4521 right away.

I just sent McConnell a message asking him to please quit the Republican Party and become a Democrat. I think we’d all be happier if he did. Contact him here:

Is his seat up for reelction in 2012? I don’t know what more we can do. These RINO idiots are hurting us badly.

I agree. Additionally, the Republican Party isn't what it used to be; the lines between it and the democRAT party have long been blurred. So saying someone is a 'Republican in name only' doesn't have the intended implication as it used to wherein saying someone is a 'progressive Republican does convey the intended disparagement. I like it!
