Actually, I take that back; he wasn’t in the Waffen SS. He was in Grossdeutschland, which was a Wehrmacht unit.

I have the original English language edition bearing a lineart drawing of a landser/noncomm on the dustjacket. A more recent issue of his book shows the picture of a haggard Waffen SS trooper on the cover. I wondered if he was giving a clue with that photo but then another issue came out with a photo of a young Heer Landser on the cover.

As for his description of Kursk, I don’t think it was accurate. There was no great “huuman wave” that overwhelmed the Germans. But in the chaos and exhaustion of combat, I can see how that’s what he remembers.

Gen Patton wrote in War as I Knew it that soldiers in combat almost always wildly overestimate the number of enemy relative to their own strength.

It's been a productive week, thanks. Today, as it happens was another story. Our Project Manager left for several days to attend a family function out West. This morning, his fill-in showed up and informed us that the priorities had changed overnight. (Not her fault - the client is apparently hallucinating.)

The batches of documents we had been working on yesterday were gone and new batches were in their place. The new batches, for reasons that I will not bore you with, were fatally flawed. We proceeded to work on these for about a half-hour, when we were informed that we were to cease working on them and to go back to other batches that we had been pulled off of about a week ago. We proceeded with those and about an hour later, we were pulled off of them, and directed to go back to the batches we had been pulled off of earlier.

These batches had by now been repaired, and we worked on them for about an hour. We were then pulled off these batches again, and put to work on another set of batches that had been newly formed. By now it was almost noon. I went to lunch.

Returning, I started working on these batches, and finally, we were not diverted again during the course of the day. We had a term for this kind of exercise in the service. It was something about a "circle." I think you know the rest!

Lots of good memories of those days. My English teacher in my Sr. year was in her early twenties, just out of college, but a formidable intellect and an excellent teacher. Many fond memories of that class.

In my undergrad days at Loyola, we had a Prof, Frank Voci, who specialized in Medieval Literature and spoke Middle English as though he was alive then. I took my Chaucer course from him, as well as several other courses in Medieval English Lit., one of which featured an extended analysis of Sir Gawaine and the Greene Knighte, and another that concerned pre Shakespearean Drama - wonderful stuff!

A good day, thanks, despite the antics of our client, recounted in my post to Luv!

I'm glad to see you had a chance to chat with your Mother. Cherish her while you can, Connie! Mine passed over twenty years ago and there is still a big hole in my life where she used to stand, dispensing Wisdom and Love. Not saying this to garner any sympathy - it's just a fact of living. I've survived most of my enemies, but I'm now the senior member of my family.

At times their voices crowd about me as in olden days, but I cannot now touch them.

Just cherish her and hold her close!

It was quite a sleigh ride in the morning. Of course, I can't tell you the name of the law firm I'm working for - suffice it to say they are a multinational law firm with hundreds of lawyers ensconced in the power centers of the world.

Really! Right now, they're about on a par with the TSA, as fare as I'm concerned!

But, I must say, I love them despite their foibles - they're standing between me and homelessness.

My favorite books as a kid were the Horatio Hornblower series by CS Forester.

Horatio Hornblower is a fictional Napoleonic Wars era Royal Navy officer who is the protagonist of a series of novels by C. S. Forester. He was later the subject of films, radio and television programs.

I loved those books! I read each and every one of them. I have a set given to me by a friend of my Father.

Another favorite of my youth was "The Boy Allies" series. WWI stories about pairs of American youths who participated in every major battle of WWI with great valor. Fantasy, but great reads.

As a parting shot, the Battle-Cruiser USS Olympia resides at Penn's Landing, Philadelphia, Pa. I visited the Olympia when I was a mere boy, some fifty years ago. On the bridge, at the spot where Dewey was standing when he uttered those immortal words at the Battle of Manila Bay, are a pair of brass footprints, memorializing the quote.

When I was coming up through elementary and high school, this event was celebrated, as were all of the great moments of our Nation's history. Now . . .
