Congressman: Christian Soldiers Being Singled out for Punishment
Fox News ^ | June 11, 2013 | Todd Starnes

A Midwestern lawmaker is calling on his colleagues in Congress to offer cover to an Army soldier under fire for his conservative political views and religious faith, and accusing the Obama administration of “creating a tyrannical culture of political correctness in the military.”

Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., is introducing an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would prevent the Army from conducting a court martial of Master Sgt. Nathan Sommers until the military first files a report for Congress to review.

“The Secretary of the Army shall provide to Congress a report on activities with respect to Master Sergeant Nathan Sommers at least 90 days prior to taking any further disciplinary or administrative action against that individual,” states Huelskamp’s amendment.

The amendment would also allow service members to sue in the event their First Amendment rights are violated. Huelskamp said the legislation will “unblock the courthouse door so that service members whose First Amendment rights have been violated by the federal government can seek redress like any other American.”

“Sgt. Sommers is the poster child for an increasingly pervasive pattern of persecution,” Huelskamp told Fox News.

Sommers, a decorated member of the U.S. Army Band, came under intense scrutiny after he was found with pro-Republican, anti-Obama bumper stickers on his personal car. An Army officer informed the solider – in writing – that the stickers were creating “workplace tension.” The 25-year military veteran was also told to stop reading books written by conservative authors while in uniform. A superior officer told him that reading books by Mark Levin, Sean Hannity and David Limbaugh was offensive to other soldiers.....

I can remember back in the day in boot camp when we were required to attend Sunday services. Obviously those days are long gone.

Sunday Services for us in 1967 were several hours of marching, but then, I was in the tough service, the U.S. Navy!

I did my basic and advance training in the late 1960's. I was never required to attend religious services. Once, we were required to attend a retreat where one could observe what ever they chose.

In Navy boot camp, everyone had to attend religious services. If you were an atheist, agnostic or ambivalent ... you still had to attend a religious service (on Sunday). The only choices were Protestant or Catholic.

During my two tours in Korea we had an official religious retreat in Seoul. Bet that’s long gone.

Back in 1966, our drill instructor off hand mentioned that he feared that one day Christian Chapels would no longer be allowed on military installations.

What a farsighted drill instructor? The American people are nearsighted by contrast.

My Dad served in the Army in WW II. He wasn’t Jewish, but he brought home a copy of a pocket-sized book entitled “Readings from the Holy Scriptures for Jewish Soldiers and Sailors”.

The title page reads as follows:

THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON

March 6, 1941

To the Members of the Army:
As Commander-in-Chief I take pleasure in commending the reading of the Bible to all who serve in the armed forces of the United States. Throughout the centuries men of many faiths and diverse origins have found in the Sacred Book words of wisdom, counsel and inspiration. It is a fountain of strength and now, as always, an aid in attaining the highest aspirations of the human soul.

Very sincerely yours,
Franklin D. Roosevelt

If you are Christian, don’t join the military. If you are Christian and in the military, get out as soon as possible. The military no longer tolerates your culture.

My Dad was also in the Army and one of my brothers has kept that same book Dad kept with him in CBI Theater of War.

Do you know if they all got the same book? My Dad was Catholic. I don’t understand why he was given a book for Jews.

My Dad was Catholic, too. I haven’t seen the book in years but do remember a type written message from FDR inside the front cover. Dad had been in the Army since 1939 so I have no idea when he received it.

I think the Star of David and Cross were on the cover.

There were probably a number of versions.

I just looked at the US Army Chaplains website. Pretty disturbing.

Christianity is in retreat all over the world.

There’s only one religion that’s on the march everywhere these days.

Anyone care to guess which one?

Class, can I see a show of hands...?
