Scientists find second, 'hidden' language in human genetic code
Breitbart / United Press International ^ | December 12, 2013

U.S. geneticists say a second code hiding within DNA changes how scientists read its instructions and interpret mutations to make sense of health and disease.

Since the genetic code was deciphered in the 1960s, scientists have assumed it was used exclusively to write information about proteins, but University of Washington scientists say they've discovered genomes use the genetic code to write two separate "languages."

One, long understood, describes how proteins are made, while the other instructs the cell on how genes are controlled. One language is written on top of the other, which is why the second language remained hidden for so long, a university release said Thursday.

"For over 40 years we have assumed that DNA changes affecting the genetic code solely impact how proteins are made," UW genome sciences Professor John Stamatoyannopoulos said. "Now we know that this basic assumption about reading the human genome missed half of the picture. These new findings highlight that DNA is an incredibly powerful information storage device, which nature has fully exploited in unexpected ways."

Parts of the genetic code have two meanings, one related to protein sequence, and one related to gene control, the researchers said, and both apparently evolved in concert with each other....

Thank you. The article says, Parts of the genetic code have two meanings, one related to protein sequence, and one related to gene control, the researchers said, and both apparently evolved in concert with each other.

That's like saying, "I was at a junk yard, the wind blew pieces against each other and made a 747."

These are fools.

In my undergrad and graduate programs I took several microbiology and biochemistry courses. What I learned was very unsatisfying and I felt that somehow something missing. Thinking through this a bit helps fill in some of the holes in my understanding.

I absolutely resonate with your comment. It was the obvious question: how did it get to Point “B”?

Yeah, put enough chimps in a room with typewriters, etc., etc...

And you get obammycare.

But, but, we had scientific consensus that there was only one language. So why we’re they allowed to research this?

Very Intelligently Designed.

It might even be able to produce differentiated species starting from the same code.

Certainly sounds promising in terms of addressing certain types of diseases.

I tried to warn scientists. I told them they are too arrogant. Too quick to say “I’ve got the answer!”

They should stand in awe of the wonders of the natural world, and realize that they don’t have the final answers

How obama, biden, pelosi, holder, sebelius, etc. came out of the genetic code.

They should stand in awe of the wonders of the natural world, and realize that they don’t have the final answers.

If they spent all their time doing that we'd never have any answers.

Hi guys! It's Me, GOD.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. So far we're only scratching the surface of understanding what goes on in those mysterious things called life and consciousness.

Science is method, not a body of knowledge; scientists sometimes get caught up in their private concerns (like, the paper at the basis of one’s entire career just got shredded by some up-and-coming), but scientists are well aware that knowledge is never complete.

This contrasts with true believers, for example, the skepticultists.

“Remember the presumptions over the coelacanths until they were discovered alive in the 1930s?”

There is a cable show saying
that Magalodon (SP?) is still swimming around out there. The ocean is certainly big enough but I’m not sure I’d believe something so huge and voracious has been missed entirely.

Science, as a discipline, has no mechanism where one can assert a ‘final answer’.

Great comments. I think it is amazing that St. Augustine had similar observations over 1600 years ago:

For just as that man who knows how to possess a tree, and give thanks
to thee for the use of it—although he may not know how many feet high
it is or how wide it spreads—is better than the man who can measure it
and count all its branches, but neither owns it nor knows or loves its
Creator: just so is a faithful man who possesses the world’s wealth as
though he had nothing, and possesses all things through his union
through thee, whom all things serve, even though he does not know the
circlings of the Great Bear. Just so it is foolish to doubt that this
faithful man may truly be better than the one who can measure the
heavens and number the stars and weigh the elements, but who is
forgetful of thee “who hast set in order all things in number, weight,
and measure.” [132]

From his Confessions, Book 5, Chapter 4.
