The truth as I see it is that this is intimidation to keep the peons in line. Payback is going to be a mother......

Yeah, poor cop. Think of the paperwork ahead of him and no dog to add to the carnage.

He’s a dull normal punk with a homicide fetish who deserves a couple of decades at the graybar to think it over.

Strange as it may sound, i still feel sorry for the cop. Yes, he f****d up big time, and maybe he`s not cut out for police work. But with all the guns around in the US cops could find themselves in a lethal situation whenever they pull someone over and they know that only to well, so i kind of understand why they might be jumpy. I actually find the reaction of his superiors almost worse than what he did.

And no, i’m not anti-gun. I`m just saying that this is one of the consequences of the right to own guns. I would like to have a gun, but I live in Germany so it`s all but impossible. On the other hand that guy would never have been shot here because beeing attacked with a gun is a very remote possibility for an ordinary German cop so they don`t try to shoot first for fear of being shot. In 2012 German cops fired all of 104 shots on humans (including 54 warning shots), yes that`s right, the entire German police force!

As a firearms instructor dealing with cops is part of the instruction. Something hard to drill in to some, is that the cop does not know who you are. You may know you are not a threat but the cops does not. You need to follow all directions and that act accordingly.

As someone who also works with geriatrics, this is especially a problem.

Why did old man get out of truck AND then reach in?

How many shooting videos on you tube start out the same way?

Would not want to be in cops shoes.

Has anyone asked the underlying question here yet?

WHY WAS HE BEING PULLED OVER IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I hate how these nationally shared local news stories never have the actual state that the story takes place in...

I saw the banner at The Herald’s site saying “Serving York, Chester, and Lancaster Counties” and then saw someone tagged the thread USPennsylvania...

It didn’t add up... the cop was on the radio calling in NC plates, and trust me, people don’t talk like that in PA... especially the Pennsylvania Dutch area.

Another rerun story covered extensively on FR closer to when it happened. For example:

Each time I see a cane.
I watched it 25 times at least.
Old stiff guy, probably deaf too, reaches for cane and blind jumpy cop shoots him.

The frequency of these incidents show a problem with police training that need to be addressed. Currently training is focused on officer safety as top priority. Perceive a threat, neutralize it immediately and deal with it later on. That’s ok except they are taught to be hypersensitive to potential “threats”. Dog barks at you- kill it, old man reaches for something in his pickup- shoot.
Very often people see what they expect to see. If you expect he is reaching for a gun, any long object is perceived as a gun. In the past cops were killed because they were too “restrained”. Now things have gone too far in the other direction.

Cops have been improperly trained for decades, and now you are seeing the product of this malfeasance daily. If any normal person does this, they hang. Cops should be LESS likely to do it because of training, not MORE likely.

OMG... Citizens are not required to follow a protocol, and normal behavior such as reaching for a cane should never be construed as threatening. Cops see people reaching for stuff every day, just like everyone else. If they draw their service weapon they should NOT be cops. They don’t have the right stuff period.

Protocol is followed by the cops, NOT not the public. Maybe this God-fearing OLD man never had been stopped in his life. Maybe he didn’t understand the rules. Cops aren’t supposed to know that?
