A rare edition of the Magna Carta has been unearthed in a city library and is believed to be worth a staggering $21.3 million.
An archivist stumbled upon the document, a third of which is missing, at the Kent History and Library Centre.
The document was found in a Victorian scrapbook after archivist Dr. Mark Bateson was asked to search for another charter from the town of Sandwich. Modal Trigger

The edition is believed to be one of only 24 copies across the world, and even with a third missing, is estimated to be worth millions.
The Magna Carta, between King John and rebel barons, dates back to 1215 and outlines basic rights with the principle that no one was above the law, including the king.
It is considered by many to be the beginning of democracy as well as the foundation for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The latest copy is believed to date back to 1300 and, according to medieval history specialist Professor Nicolas Vincent from the University of East Anglia, could indicate that further copies exist....

The first document that says no one is above the law, even Kings - the basis of most Western Law systems.
(Guess someone should remind King Obama)
June 15th....is now...semi unofficially...REMIND OBAMA DAY!
Nice to have it to remind us of the rights we have lost...
I thought this document was on velum?
First it’s Vince Lombardi’s sweatshirt, now this. Cool.
Note its value is expressed in dollar terms NOT in terms of legal control over the rulers.
This is an ancient document, not relevant to today's government, right?
Great. It can join the US Constitution as a pattern for a new line of toilet paper.
we havent lost them..theyre being infringed upon by the current batch of yahoos in seats of power
the rights will still be there after the yahoos leave. long LONG after the yahoos leave
Do you want to pawn it or sell it?
Let me rant for a minute -
This principle that “all are equal before the law” is extremely important, and often unappreciated. In a way, it makes for better leaders, because they know there is legal accountability for their actions.
If PM Stephen Harper hits my car and does not make amends, I have the legal right to take him to court. In that court, he and I have the exact same legal rights, even though I’m a nobody and he’s the Prime Minister.
Now consider those countries that do not accept this equality principle - Russia, Venezuela, Iran, etc.
If I get hit by Putin’s or Maduro’s car, and try to sue, not only does the court not hold those leaders responsible, but I probably get arrested for complaining. Or some goons in black overcoats show up at 2 am to whisk me away for a beating. THAT’S why we consider those countries not free, not modern.
Even in recent times, Clinton tried to say the equality provision didn’t apply to a sitting President, that he couldn’t be sued by Paula Jones. Fortunately, the USSC remembered the Magna Carta and the principles it represents.
A little appreciation for that scrap of paper the barons forced King John to sign in the forest 7 centuries ago....
Yes, just like you, I thought of Barry Soetoro as well.
It's simply astounding how swiftly we have lost the Republic to fascism.
Brian Williams put that there.
Aw, man. I’m going to have to get it framed, it’ll sit in my shop for a long time, ever since the creation of ebay the bottom dropped out of the market...I’ll give you 25 bucks for it.

Oh good. They found my property. I KNEW I left it between the pages of that library book I returned, but I wasnt sure...
Hhmmm....I have a copy from the late 1700s...took it from someone who was letting it rot....and couldn’t have cared less
Actually, the Magna Carta was the statement of the bishops and barons saying that the king had to recognize their God-given liberties. The bishops and barons spoke for all the English with the document and eventually all the people took it as their own. Henry VIII egregiously ignored it and destroyed the infrastructure of liberty that the English people had created without the help of the king.
A king ignoring the Magna Carta never nullified the idea it represented.
