Trump on Fiorina's face: I made those comments as an entertainer

Donald Trump didn’t mean any harm when he criticized fellow GOP 2016 presidential candidate Carly Fiorina’s face. He says he was just being the showman he is.

“Many of those comments are made as an entertainer because I did The Apprentice and it was one of the top shows on television,” he told Greta Van Susteren on Thursday night. “Some comments are made as an entertainer and as everybody said, as an entertainer is a much different ball game.”

Trump who is leading in Republican polls has said comments that would have buried many other candidates.

A Rolling Stone story Wednesday illustrates a scene where Trump watches Fiorina come onto the TV screen.

“’Look at that face!' he cries. 'Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!' The laughter grows halting and faint behind him. 'I mean, she's a woman, and I'm not s'posed ta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?'”

On Thursday night, he reiterated what he told CNN earlier — that the face comments were actually about her persona.

“We’re really talking about not a physical thing, we’re talking about the persona. This is a women that gets tremendous publicity,” he said. “I don’t know why…her past doesn’t go along with the publicity she’s getting.”

But it didn’t take long before he was back on his favorite punching bag: Jeb Bush. “When somebody knocks me like Jeb Bush or anybody else, I at least decide that I think it’s appropriate to fight back.”

Van Susteren pointed out this wasn’t his first time saying controversial comments about women.

Trump responded that he was leading with women, and many other groups.

He has five children, not three.

You think she wouldn’t make a good president because you don’t like the way she looks?

How about because of her beliefs or ideology or personal history or that kind of stuff?

Seriously speaking (pardon the irony) SOME humor is a good thing, as long as it doesn’t walk away with you. Trump should control the humor, not the humor control Trump. Not a fatal problem, not one he can’t recover from.

Actually we all know that it wasn't a joke. He didn't say one thing and mean another. He meant exactly what he said about Fiorina.

Might have meant she had an ugly expression. Trouble is, in the biz Donald has been in, there are all manner of personal overtones to such a remark. Nobody’s expecting Carly to be a Miss America after all.

The other thing about Trump that is unique, for good or for bad, is that he lives in two different worlds, figuratively speaking. He lives in the world of entertainment. He’s comfortable there. He speaks like an entertainer. Off the cuff. Contraversial and personal at times. He also lives in the world of business at its highest level. It’s a strange combination.

The entertainer aspect of his personality is probably what has allowed him to beat down the msm. No other politician lives in that world the way he does or could have been as effective as he has been at fighting them.

Most of us would rather he focus on policy, but thinking strategically, a certain degree of Trump the entertainer is probably the thing that will allow him to pull in support from many LIV’s. But you’re right that it can get out of hand at times, and he needs to be careful.

As Rush said Trump needs to stick to the issues. I know this is Politico but the advice stands.

Trump's problem IS the issues.

Once Freepers finally figure that out, Trump will be last week's fishwrap.

Yep, and being in the entertainment industry certainly helped Reagan.

Thanks.

It seems like more than a few people do want Donald Trump for a leader however. And it isn’t as if he hasn’t had more than a few insults directed his way- Bobby “1%” Jindhal’s “squirrel on his head” comment for example. I’m sure Colbert will be super respectful too. Frankly, I like what what he said about Carly Fiorina and I hope he has plenty more good material lined up for the other 1%ers.

>> He ought to be all over the Iran Deal like Cruz is doing <<

Of course. Just compare the two men’s speeches the other day at the Capitol Hill rally. Cruz’s speech was all about the Iran deal. Trump’s speech was 1/4 about the Iran deal, and 3/4 about how great a DT presidency would be.

Wait, now he made those comments as an entertainer? I thought that Rolling Stone twisted his words or that his comments about her face had nothing to do with her appearance. Pick an excuse and stick with it man and maybe consider talking about the issues instead of insulting everyone in sight.

Yes, it allowed him to go around a hostile media and connect directly with the electorate. Of course the country was different back then. More conservative. The media were hostile to conservatives then, but not as much as today.

Yeah what you said. She doesn’t look well, she doesn’t present well and the world will continue to think America is a sick society by producing such people as ‘leaders’.

Her beliefs, ideology, track record, etc. all are part of her ‘presence’, her ‘face’, the face she presents to American and the world.

George Washington had ‘Command Presence’. If he had acted like a buffoon, his ‘Command Presence’ would have been nonexistent.

Winston Churchill was ugly but he had ‘Command Presence’ because he was a tough bastard.

If butt ugly Fiorina were to seek ‘Command Presence’ she would make statements like: “On my first day as President, I will declare every illegal alien as part of an invading force and will use emergency provisions of the Posse Comitatus Act to deploy our US Military to capture everyone of them.”

Suddenly, Fiorina’s butt ugliness would evaporate and be replaced by a mug of a serious leader. But this will never happen. So Donald Trump is correct, she doesn’t have a ‘face’ meaning the whole being to be anything other than a joke as President.

Yes back then the media were partisan liberals, but independent of the actual Democrat party.

In 2008 they became members of the regime (journ-0-lists)

Agreed. In some ways this is much ado about nothing, but the media likes to focus on these things so ipso facto, it really isn’t nothing. If Trump made that comment to friends around the dinner table, people would understand what he meant, but this isn’t the dinner table. If he doesn’t take that into account, he’ll continue to have these types of issues pop up from time to time.

Ah, I see. A face is not a face but a persona.

Whatever.

Donald likely got it from his wife Melania who is from Europe where the term ‘face’ means the whole person. I can imagine when they were tucking in for the night with tube on, they saw Fiorina speaking with Melania exclaiming “Look at this Face!”. It would mean the ‘presence’ of the person.

In Asia it means even more. It means pride and dignity. When a business meeting is convened in an Asian bank or conference room, the silent understanding is that all parties will adhere to the standard that no party should lose ‘face’. If a party loses ‘face’, the meeting is usually adjourned and the outcome is a failure.

Jeanne Kirkpatrick was butt ugly, uglier than even Fiorina but she had ‘face’ because of what was inside her. I would have looked past her ugliness and would have been happy to have voted for her.

But with Fiorina, there is nothing to look past to, so her face of ugliness remains.
