Trump’s Ceiling of Support May Be Limited
The New York Times ^ | 2/11/16 | Sean Trende

Posted on 02/13/2016 12:50:30 PM PST by TBBT

Few professional analysts seriously expected six months ago that Donald Trump could win the Republican nomination. But after Tuesday night, it is a clear possibility.

How much of a possibility? To get that answer right, it is important to understand some things about the Trump phenomenon.

Perhaps most important, Trump's campaign is not a Tea Party phenomenon. While there's been a tendency to try to lump Trump in with various G.O.P. insurgencies of the last few years, that role is best filled by Sen. Ted Cruz, who really occupies the "Tea Party lane" of the G.O.P. primary more cleanly.

Instead, Trump is a part of a much older insurgency within the G.O.P., dating back to the 1992 Pat Buchanan campaign and even to some internal debates within the Nixon administration. Candidates in this vein, such as Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Rick Santorum, have argued from varying angles that the economic libertarianism of the G.O.P. is a tough sell, and should be pulled more toward an economic populism that allows for increased redistribution and for helping the "little guy" who has been left behind in the era of globalization. It is because of this confusion that so many of the early attacks on Trump - from questioning his conservative bona fides to making fun of the way he talked - fell flat. Trump's voters simply didn't care about these things.

Gosh,,, got to FR a couple of months before me. Also think Cruz is far and away the best man for the job!!! Trump has not clearly elucidated any conservative principals in the last couple of months.

Just think what would be said if Trump said “that damn sergeant is not going to get kicked outta the service because he defended a boy getting raped by an Afgan soldier”.

SAY SOMETHING CONSERVATIVE TRUMP and stop scaring the hell outta me!!!!!

You should know that trusting politicians is always a losing proposition. But the question is who do you think will do more of what he/she says? I am ready to give Trump credit for getting a majority of his business dealings right. More than any politician in recent years.

Yes, Cruz is a conservative, but conservatives do not have a better record, and Trump has beaten them to the punch when it comes to positions of concern to the people. Maybe it is the PC thing. Trump has been willing to go farther out on that non-PC limb more times than the other guys put together. It is time he had his chance.

And the fact that he is the number one GOPe fear makes it all the more important to support him. (Cruz is second choice), But Trump’s ceiling will grow to what ever it needs to be.

Altura, we have evaluated Trump the same way you evaluated Ted.

You ignore Ted’s past. We don’t ignore Trump’s. How could we? It’s there. He doesn’t mince words about it. He simply tells us what he wants to do now. He isn’t lying to me.

I consider a guy a liar that misrepresents his past. Does Trump do that? No. He doesn’t address it. I appreciate that. He tells me what he wants to do, and I believe him. He didn’t lie to me to convince me his (political) past was “great”.

Someone else actually does. I don’t trust that person. I’m not calling you names over your support. I’m not claiming to be following the best Christian who lies. I’m going with my instincts just like you are.

I’m not trying to think ways to express your flaws, so that I can be comfortable about my decision. I simply trust Trump more.

He has proven abilities. He’s like me in certain ways, in that he hasn’t led a perfect life. He has made his mistakes and yet, in some ways is a very disciplined man.

He is what he is, and you can think I’m extremely flawed if you like. If that’s what it take to make you comfortable, go ahead.

Me? I’m comfortable with you voting for whoever you want, and I don’t need to think you’re a psychotic fanboy fake Christian and Leftist to be comfortable with my choice.

Well, better late than never. Hah.

We’ve been through a lot here.

We always think this is the worst ever.

I actually do think that but I’m not as sensitive as I was 4 years ago. I allowed mean people here to hurt me. I’m smarter now.

If you don’t like it that much, ask to have it removed.

I won’t be offended.

It’s human nature. Every line on every map was drawn with the blood of men. You can’t simply erase one and think all will be well.

Since the New York Slimes has already officially endorsed Kasich, it’s quite heartwarming to see them so concerned about Trump’s supposed “support ceiling”, which of course as we all really know is just another pseudo-erudite way for the Slimes branch of the enemedia to thump the drum of “Trump is a joke”, “Trump is a buffoon”, “Trump can’t win”, “Trump is a clown”, “Trump isn’t in this to win”, “Trump will drop out”, “Trump has no chance”, “Trump appeals only to uneducated rednecks”, etc., etc., etc.

Nonetheless, this sea-change of repeatedly posting enemedia sources to FR to help guide us in our thinking must mean our tent is getting bigger, sí?

One may hope that Cruz gets the nomination, but I sense the only thing he will get is the heave. As time goes on, he is becoming less of a factor because his campaign is erratic and shiftless.

Like him.

I don’t think you’re flawed at all and I’ve never seen a nasty post out of you.

I don’t know why you say I ignore Ted’s past because I’m a Texan and pretty familiar with him.

But I don’t want to argue with you.

I don’t think Trump is lying now. I just think he is doing the deal, telling people what they want to hear.

I just don’t think his principles are rock solid.

But, hey, we’re buddies anyway. I just wish the rest of the Trump supporters had your character.

There is nothing in his history to make me believe that. Until 2011, he was quite liberal.

Until 2014, he wasn't immersed in politics.

Any extrapolation of historical behavior is uncertain at best and dead certain at worse.

One safe assumption I can make about Trump is if he displayed in the past the criminal behavior of most of our elected criminals of both parties, he would be in jail. He's outnumbered...
