Prayer Request for A Tiny Baby (Update in post #12850)
Myself | 8-11-03 | Brad's Gramma

Posted on 08/11/2003 12:57:30 PM PDT by Brad’s Gramma

If you will, please remember this tiny baby in your prayers. He’s the grandson of a very dear friend of mine. Logan was born on July 25. His due date was in October, making his mommy 26 weeks along, being born 3 months and 3 days early.

Logan was 1 lb 9.4 oz when he was born and is now weighing, as of this morning, 1 lb. 8.3 oz. The little guy is now 12-1/2” long.

He’s a real trooper and is fighting with all his little body can fight with. His Grandma said that he’s starting to recognize his mommy when she comes in the room and hears her voice. She said he tries so hard to open his eyes, and starts kicking his feet.

I asked my friend if there were any specific prayers, other than the obvious…and this is her reply…” A prayer of thanks for the miracle called "Logan.”

On a personal note, I’ve read the emails daily from my friend. I’ve known her for years, I’ve heard her talking about her family for years…but I’ve got to tell you that I’m SO impressed with how her children have all banded together in support. What an incredibly wonderful and loving family.

Father God, we lift up Logan’s little body to you. We pray that you can strengthen him hourly, daily, weekly, until he’s grown enough to go home with his precious family. We ask for guidance for the doctors and nurses who are caring for him. We ask for strength for his parents and extended family. Thank you so much for the gift of life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Fellow Freepers…….I bring you Logan!!!

Kathryn?

Yes, daughter claims that's the English spelling (and she was a History major in college). All three girls are named after one or more Enlglish Queens.

Bases on family history, Victoria will probably be built like her namesake when she becomes a Senior Citizen. :)

Glad she’s with Grandma G and in bed with her.

Poor Miss V woke up about 1 AM Wed. morning, throwing up. Continued off and on for much of the night. She went to Grandma's doctor (A Very Good family type doctor), who gave her antibiotic and anti-nausea Rx's. The latter something that rubbed onto the wrist, rather than ingested.

At last report she's doing better, but she and Grandma both exhausted.

Pretty little Miss V looks like her mommy, to me.

Pretty much, but there enough of Daddy there that she doesn't look like her mommy did as a baby. She does have her Grandma Gato's eyes, exact color match. Grandma in turn has her father's and especially Grandfather's Dane/Norwegen blue eyes.

Twins eye color is a much deeper blue, but of course that will likely change. Don't really recall the color of their mom's eyes when first born. Now they are close to my wife's, but a tiny bit darker.

I see the light went on. :) She has the personality to live up to that namesake too.

With all those females about, (there are two more, wife's great nieces), it can be. Betch yer booty it can.

We've got:

One having 'power surges' (aka hot flashes)

One about to go into post partum depression (if she has time :) )

One in a "why am I not pregnant?" funk.

One about to enter puberty.

A frustrated and probably dyslexic (thus the frustration) second grader.

A terrible two year old

Preemie twins, with delusions of grandeur

Oh yea, lots of fun here. Fortunately there are two sons-in-law to share the fun, and a male dog (sort of) for moral support.

Twin update! (Duplicate from Kaydance's thread

Both babies have some degree of jaundice and Kathryn is on a "light pillow" for treatment. It's way cool, makes her look like a little glow worm, since it's under her blankets and they glow a nice monochromatic bluish green.

The head ICU shift Nurse Practitioner says that it's quite likely Elizabeth will be going home *Tomorrow* (actually today), ,or maybe Monday. That's actually going to create scheduling problems as it will be quite a while before little Kathryn gets to do the same. Fortunately the hospital is only a few minutes, 10 tops, away from home.

Grandpa got to help feed the babies 3 times on Saturday, freeing up Daddy for other stuff, including sleeping. :) They get breast fed, and then a supplemental bottle. I'd feed the bottle to the one while the other ate "The Good Stuff". Kathryn is a really good eater, both ways, usually anyway. She always starts strong, and generally goes as long as they want her to. Well, with the good stuff, with the supplement, it's so so, but she still usually starts strong. Elizabeth often falls asleep when not yet finished, and it's difficult to get her to even try to finish.

Still she's not losing weight anymore, and hopefully will have gained a little in the morning when they have the daily weigh in. Kathryn has also stopped losing, but she has already started gaining.

Since I couldn't get her to take much of the bottle, I did have a nice long snuggle with Elizabeth while Kat was finishing, or not finishing actually, at the 11 PM feeding.

Also took their Mommy to lunch at a Chinese place in Austin that their Daddy doesn't like much, between the 11 AM and 2 PM feedings.

Thanks, El Gatp, for the Twin update....my baby knowledge is less than limited, but it seems all new mommies I know have said their babies have/had some degree of jaundice. Must be fairly common. Lucky grandpa getting to help at meal times, and doing such a good job. Good news that both girls are gaining weight.

Good morning EG...

The news sounds great for your 2 babies. Aren’t they the sweetest things in the world???

With Elizabeth going home before Kathryn, it will give everyone time to adjust and get ready for the second round! And Kathryn, eating as she is, will be there quicker than you would think. Any news on her little legs? We pray that everything will be OK with her in every way.

I know what you mean about the little glow worm. Isn’t it amazing though what they can do to help these babies?? The jaundice will leave... and in the meantime, the blue light is what will help it do so.

Glad to hear you’re on dinner duty! Maybe these 2 will let you hug them :) LOL What does Miss V think about having baby sisters? She’s going to be so good with them I bet.

Thanks for the update...... prayers continue as always.

Nana

have said their babies have/had some degree of jaundice. Must be fairly common.

A little over 50% of full term newborns. Something like 95% of preemies. With preemie meaning at least 3-4 weeks early.

As you can imagine it's a topic of conversation, and my daughter is very big on doing her homework, so she *knew* the numbers.

Not that I know of, but I'll ask. Her mother asked the staff neonatalogist to run a genetic test to see if there is any genetic difference between the twins. She, the doctor, thought that there probably was not, but would run the test.

But whatever the source of her overall smaller size (not uncommon, even with identical twins) she does like to move those legs around whenever she escapes from the cocoon (very much like a papoose board, without the board) they have both girls in, she likes to move those legs around, much more so than lazy 'Liz. When she gets a diaper change, she waves both arms and legs about vigorously, while Elizabeth is more passive, but not completely so. The docs and nurses say it's fairly usual for the smaller twin to be the more active and aggressive...but things often change after a while too, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Forgot to mention that Kathryn is still in the isolette, with a warmer. Both are still "wired for sound", or at least for heartbeat, respiration, and concentration of O2 in their blood. The babies both have use of some really nice little knit or crocheted blankets to help keep them warm and toasty, made by volunteers. My wife does something similar with quilts, she and friend donate at least one quilt a year to one of the big children's hospitals, so these are sort of like the bread cast upon the waters.

Also forget that they put tiny on a higher calorie formula supplement at the 11 PM feeding last night. She didn't seem to like it much, but hopefully it was just different and she'll get used to it.

Grandpa slept clear through the 5 AM feeding, and the getting ready for it. I did wake up during the prep for the 8 AM, but stayed at the house, the twins' and Victoria's house, and got cleaned up. I'll take Mom and Dad to breakfast...unless Elizabeth comes home with them, in which case I'll go get it.

I'd best go get my shoes and socks on so I'll be ready when they return from the 8 AM.

Further updates to follow...although I'll be in Orlando starting tomorrow and won't be back here until about 4 PM Saturday. I'll relay what I get though.

She's only seen pictures so far. She's 4+ hours north with Grandma. She was supposed to come back Friday, but both she and Grandma got sick.

Apparently she's missing Mommy pretty badly, to the point where La Gata had to hide the pictures. Still the great nieces help keep her occuppied and that helps a lot. She's also getting more quality time with Mort the mutt, who runs free in GrandMa's house, although he knows where he's not supposed to go, and generally doesn't go there.

Glow little glow worm - glimmer - glimmer. : )

Thanks for the update...glad to hear things are going well.

It’s great what medical techniques can do these days.

Taking one baby home at a time may work out better for everybody. Get one baby settled in and go back for the other.

Miss V is going to have her work cut out for her, being a big sis to TWO baby sisters! : )

Home at Last Home At Last ...

Well it really was much shorter than anyone thought it would be. We were all amazed. And Grandpa was there to see it. Grandpa also put the car seat base into Mommy's car, in belt and suspenders fashion using both the included strap and the seat belt/shoulder harness, either of which could be used alone.)

Took picture of both babies, with Grandpa holding Kat, Dad holding Beth, and Mommy in the middle. Also Mommy holding Kat, and Grandpa holding Kat.

Elizabeth arrives home!

But little Kathryn is Still in Stir.

However she is off the lights. (This photo is old, she no longer has the IV line in her scalp) No real estimate of when she'll get to go home. She ate like a piglet at the 11 AM feeding 20 minutes "ON" plus 30ml of supplement/stored "Good Stuff", 3 PM was done by the NICU nurses, and she didn't eat quite so well at 5 PM, but neither did Elizabeth, who got to go home anyway.

We're hoping Beth grows into one of the other two car seats by the time Kat comes home. She was just barely too small for one of those, but fortunately they had another one, the one in picture above.

Talked with Grandma Gata to tell her about Beth coming home. She said Miss V is recovered to her old dancing singing and prancing self. I was really glad to hear that... even if she did say "No No No" when asked if she wanted to talk to Grandpa. :)
