Poor dog.

If they are out of control enough to shoot a police dog, they are out of control enough to shoot a fellow officer or a bystander.
Somebody needs a new career.

Dumb ass trigger happy cops are now shooting their own dogs?!
I thought cops only killed dogs belonging to the peons.

After a verbal altercation, the man ran from the deputies and broke into a neighboring house. The deputies sent the dog after him, and as it approached, the man raised his hand and deputies opened fire, Pena said. Why the &*%$ did they shoot THE DOG? What a bunch of idiots!
Just another reason to stay away from LA. The cops are so stupid they kill their own.

Patently false. If a dog is between you and the perp, it is the moral equivalent of a houseplant if you shoot "through" it.
Not so with a human being, made in the image of God.
They are not remotely the same thing.

I'm wondering: number of rounds fired?
Two words come to mind: unconsciously incompetent

Where do you read they were out of control? Could a shot have ricocheted and struck the dog?
To: Brian S
Compliments of Sheriff Lee Baca, A-hole extraordinaire. This sheriff has an IQ just slightly north of Rodney King. He consistently exceeds his annual budget. He consistently supports increased taxes so he can have more money. He thinks that people should gladly pay the tripling of the car tax while he flies around in his sheriff's dept airplane. They don't make them any dumber or more greedly than this guy.

Sorry...respectfully disagree with you both...at this point. I don't know the whole story...haven't read the police report either.
Could the dog have jumped at the perp...only to have a bullet hit him?
Sure...bad cops exist. But I'm not ready to label these cops out of control. Nope...not yet.
FWIW-

With all due respect, in my book it is.
I divide creation into two groups:
1. Man
2. Everything else
So for me, shooting at a perp with disregard for a dogs life does not even compare with shooting at a perp with disregard for an inocent human life.
But again, that is just according to my Book.

You are nuts. Slap a dog with a sandal and die--- this is not America. Put a police dog in my face and you, the dog and bystanders will not greet the next sunrise. I am not a fellon and will not be in the verbal altercation.

I'm not nuts, but I may be dense. I'm afraid I do not understand the meaning of your post, regarding my post. I do agree that if a police dog was put in my face, it would end up with a broken neck pronto.
And I'm not a felon either.

What did they expect the guy to do when a dog is let loose on his ass?
I suspect anyone would raise their arms in some way to protect themselves, sandal in hand or not.
