Back surgery may be a reason. I did read his whole statement, he did use some good statements, but some important things remain:

He only did this after being cornered, not on his own. He has serious credibiliity on this, and we would say this about some guy who didnt have millions of his own money and had to rob a store to get his painkillers on the street.

Rush knew better, his own comments proved it, his lifestyle, actions, Rush knew he had a problem. While he said he tried twice to go clean, he KNEW from those time he had a problem, and he had to be cornered to do it a 3rd time.

Going twice on your own is commendable, but to go the third time because you were caught, that is not, not commendable at all. You did know by then.

Rush knew and he avoided it, and it is clearly his fault. He did make statements to that effect, but he needs to really face it. His money wealth and power tell me he will have a bad time doing just that

Oh now you've gone and done it, MJY1288. There's probably a thread over there all about this.

Dane:

do you think that rightbanker = wolfie? Is that what you are saying.

Well, you're wrong.

Also, I never posted anything on DU, as you seem to have insinuated.

Again, I think you've got me mixed up with somebody else.

I'll be interested in two people's opinions in particular on this issue:

- Dubya
- Michael Irvin (who was fairly moderate in his remarks last Sunday compared to Tom Jackson).

Rush does come off as somewhat sanctimonious and pompous. He's going to take a lot over this revelation. I hope he can beat this addiction, but it will be a tough road.

The other thing that is sobering is the fact that the man is incredibly rich and has access to the best doctors in the world, but even that isn't enough to fix his back so he doesn't have the pain.

Agreed. I get low back pain from time to time due to other health issues, and the pain completely shuts me down. And yes, I will admit to 'self-medicating'- taking a vicodin for the back pain when it was prescribed for something else.

I've done the same thing but pain killers do not really do much for me

The problem with lower back is one it goes out you just can’t move with out screaming in agony.

I has to call an ambulance once because I could not move because of the pain... they had to lift me up and carry me out strapped to a back board

After surgery in the 60s, I ended up hooked on Morphine. This is as an 8 year old and in the hospital. I have no problems envisioning pain killers getting their hooks into a strong willed man.

"My prayers go out to Rush. Drug addiction is a terrible thing."

Especially if your not connected. really terrible. if your connected it's kinda terrible in the sense you'll have to put up with those masseuses and vitamin treatments and hot saunas. It's terrible but without the sodomizing and utter destruction of the soul that occurs behind the prison wall.

There is also a sort of combo of biology/personality who is easier addicted than others. For biology, look at the ravages "firewater" brought to the American Indian population. For personality or personal type of addiction, look to the depressed or disthymic or bipolar population. They are far more tempted to self-medicate than a person blessed with a stable neurology.

Yes, but the Drug Warriors don't care. A large part of their psychology is the need to feel morally superior to others. They get a thrill out of condemning drug addicts as "morally weak" and sending them to prison. Somehow, this makes the Drug Warriors feel better about themselves.

More piling on. I remember one lib who said that Rush's hearing loss was a fraud (but then it was used as "proof" of his addiction since it reportedly can be one sympton of oxycotin addiction). I can't recall which lib it was but I think that it was Bill Maher or Micheal Moore (who made similar claims about Charlton Heston's Alzheimer's being a hoax).

Expect NO sympathy from the natering nabobs of negativity.

Hey look, he's like every other contrite asshat. I would have been a lot more impressed had he admitted his problem so bravely before they got the goods on him. It's not like he had a lot of choice in the matter. Stop the stupid hero worship.

Public discovery is often the first step to breaking addiction. I sympathize because I was also a drug addice at one time. I undetrstand fully the "I can handle it; I have to stop doing this someday, but not today; can I ever be free?; I wish I could tell somebody about this," attitude pervasive among addicted people. All that is shattered upon discovery, and all self delusion evaporates. All that is left is a despeartion to be free. It is the same with almost everyone, not just Rush.

No hero worship here, just concern for another human being and sympathy in seeing someone go through what I went through years ago.
