US cardinal urges Catholics to take ‘St. Francis Pledge’ on climate change
Catholic Culture ^ | September 30, 2010

In a letter to parishes dated October 4-- the memorial of St. Francis of Assisi-- Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles will announce the formation of the Archdiocesan Creation Sustainability Ministry, according to the electronic newsletter of the Catholic Climate Covenant.

“We exhort our faith communities and all our brothers and sisters to take the St. Francis Pledge, an initiative that urges Catholics nationwide to pray for, learn about, assess, act and advocate for populations affected by climate change, especially those that are most vulnerable,” Cardinal Mahony adds.

“The St. Francis Pledge is a promise and a commitment by Catholic individuals, families, parishes, organizations and institutions to live our faith by protecting God’s Creation and advocating on behalf of people in poverty who face the harshest impacts of global climate change,” according to the Catholic Climate Covenant, an initiative of the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change. In marked contrast to some environmental organizations, the Catholic Climate Covenant states that it holds to “an authentically Catholic Pro-Life position which uncompromisingly excludes abortion, artificial contraception, and/or sterilization.”

The coalition, in turn, is a partnership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the National Religious Partnership for the Environment, and ten other organizations.

Catholic social teaching on safeguarding the environment is summarized in Chapter 10 of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, which was issued in 2004. Pope Benedict further reflected on the topic in his 2010 World Day of Peace message.

As a Franciscan, I am offended that this (L.A.) archdiocese is using St. Francis to promote this quasi-Marxist filth. I hope the new Bishop will be loyal to Rome and put a stop to this.

In addition to this, there is a Catechism conference this coming weekend and four of the seminars deal with “climate change”. That has NOTHING to do with the faith, I’m so mad I could spit.

I would have thought you could see much better than that up there on your high horse.

Even though he is a Cardinal, Mahoney has proven with his own words many times that he does not speak the truth about the Catholic Church. Therefore, he doesn’t speak for the Church.

The Catholic Church is not going to go away. And you should be glad for that. The Catholic Church is the only church speaking against abortion, euthanasia and many other life issues. These are hardly leftist causes.

The Church is neither left or right, conservative or liberal. The Church is truth.

Catholic church just will not go away.

No, the Catholic Church will not go away. I'm aware that some folks, perhaps even some folks on this forum, would like nothing better than for the lot of us to just drop dead. Ain't gonna happen. Deal with it.

Meantime, protestantism would look a whole lot less hypocritical if protestants were a whole lot more visible in pro-life work.

...And I say the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus...the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color...

This church you protect is mystery Babylon the Great

She was responsible for killing the real Christian martyrs in history...and hiding the truth of God in Latin so that only scholars would know what it truly said...

Why do you suppose it was called the "dark ages" of history...

I bet you read about this in a comic book, come on just tell us.

She was responsible for killing the real Christian martyrs in history

Saint Stephen is typically consider the first martyr. He was killed by Jewish authorities with Saint Paul's participation. Perhaps you should read the Bible sometime and not comic books.

and hiding the truth of God in Latin so that only scholars would know what it truly said...

Here's a little history for you, prior to the invention of the printing press, nearly everyone was illiterate. There were EXACTLY TWO written languages that were widespread throughout Europe prior to the 15th century: Greek and Latin, the Bible was available in both (though due to cost, the average person could never afford one). What language do YOU think the Bible should have been written in? English? Too bad, it DID NOT EXIST, neither did French or Spanish or German. The FACT is that ALL literate people could read Greek and Latin, so there was no impediment.

Why do you suppose it was called the "dark ages" of history...

I'll give you a hint, the Dark Ages had been over for CENTURIES before it was called that. But the Dark Ages refers to the collapse of civilization and economy when the Roman Empire collapsed. During this period, the ONLY source of stability throughout most or Europe was the Catholic Church.

Well at least you still have Notre Dame, and all those hard core anti-abortion stalwarts there!

The problem is your “priests” - and their politics - not the rank and file - so lets stop with the straw man.

And consider stopping changing the topic as well. The topic is “Stupid Catholic Priests want to use pulpit for left wing politics”

Deal with that.

You start with the personal slight, and go forward with defense of the Church on off topic topics.

Then you claim a Cardinal “does not speak for the church”. Good one.

Evidently your position is - “When they speak what I want to hear - they are speaking for the church. When they speak nonsense, they aren’t speaking for the church”. Nice filter.

Do you have the guts to summarize Catholic Church support for Obama? Were they - on average - pro or con? Illegal immigration?

Catholics deserve better leadership.

Here is some data for you -

Nationwide, 54 percent of Catholics supported Obama and 44 percent voted for McCain. Of the total population, 52 percent voted for Obama and 46 percent for McCain.

Stalwart anti-abortion forces.

Not leftist at all - just managed to vote MORE for Obama than the average.

Got data?

Shakespeare was a Catholic.

I'm not sure I'd say that with 100% certainty, but the arguments in favour of that assertion are persuasive.
