National Geographic‘s new issue exposes the ivory business, which has been hiding in plain sight since a worldwide trade ban was enacted in 1989. And a major player in the magazine’s story is a priest in the Philippines whom I wrote about in 2005 when investigating another global-trafficking phenomenon — the Catholic Church’s movement of sexual abuse suspects across international borders to escape justice.
The priest, Monsignor Cristobal Garcia, is now quoted as explaining how to smuggle ivory into the United States: “Wrap it in old, stinky underwear and pour ketchup on it.”

Are you sure he was taking about ivory in this statement or was he talking about boys? Perhaps “ivory” is his euphemism for the boy’s ... erm... well you know...
I find it hard to believe that there’s a big market for ivory icons in the USA. Asia and Indonesia, yeah, but not the US.

What will sound like satire is the excuses and rationalizations on the way:

But since the Monsignor is from a wealthy family the Cardinal will be ever so tolerant of his “peccadilloes”.

What is even more pathetic than continuing to post these posts is the absolute certainty of seeing the same anti-Catholics appear in the thread. One wonders what they find so enticing and salacious about any topic combining priests and sexual abuse.
