CNN Poll: American Catholics approve of new pope (.... but ....)

Washington (CNN) – American Catholics are very enthusiastic about the choice of Pope Francis to head the Roman Catholic Church, according to a new national survey.

But a CNN/ORC International survey also indicates that you shouldn't expect them to pay any more attention to the new pope's teachings on issues like birth control than they paid to his predecessors.
"Pope Francis is starting off with a huge reservoir of goodwill in the U.S. Eighty-eight percent of American Catholics questioned in our survey approve of his selection as pope," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

By contrast, an ABC News/Washington Post poll in April, 2005, found only 60% of Americans Catholics approved of the selection of Pope Benedict, the predecessor to Francis.

The new poll's release comes as Francis, known until his election as pope last week as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, is inaugurated Tuesday at a ceremony at the Vatican.

While they support his election as pope, nearly three-quarters of American Catholics say they are more likely to follow their own conscience on difficult moral questions than the teachings of the pope.

Where is the misinformation, exactly?

I think it's hugely unwise to assume every poll with results you don't like is biased or poorly sampled or deliberately involves "non Mass attenders".

Many FReepers mocked the presidential polls (i.e. oversampled Democrats), yet they were right on.

American Catholics overall are hugely guilty of failing to comply with papal edicts on issues such as artificial birth control.

Is there really any question about that?

And very few NO homilies would even broach these issues, from what I have heard.

They have something in common with serial killers, rapists, child molesters, and thieves. They also act on their own ‘conscience’. Today, the rampant use of the word ‘conscience’ is basically saying, “I decide what is right or wrong, even if I’m a Catholic or any other type of Christian. I am God!”

It's certainly questionable whether Rob Bell is deserving of the definition "Protestant". I can't think of a time when he has ever referred to himself as one, and I don't think he qualifies as one. Why do you say he is one?

I did use the protestant term in shorthand form. Broadly speaking Christians fall into three camps; Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant. I am aware that within those categories there are poignant differences and one may argue whether the differences are of kind or degree.
I listened to one theologian who drew a profound distinction between the reformation of Luther contrasted with the reformation of Zwingli/Calvin.
On one end of the spectrum we have the “labels are meaningless” crowd and on the other end we have the “labels are words that mean things” (which I subscribe to) crowd. That being said, not everyone who calls himself a Christian or a particular denomination of Christian is one.
