ABSTRACT: Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus’ death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross. Our Lord's passion and death remain as gruesome today as they were 2000 years ago.
Read a doctor at Calvary many years ago. It goes into quite a detailed account of the pain it causes...I christian will end up crying after reading it...
Thank you for posting this. I had read it before, but I took the time and re-read it just now. From a purely clinical and medical perspective, the crucfiction offers us a look at the physical side of this extremely cruel form of torture.
FTA.... Death by crucifixion was, in every sense of the word, excruciating (Latin, excruciatus, or “out of the cross”).
In 1978, there was research done on the shroud which revealed very interesting evidence. A member of the team was a physicist John Jackson who taught at the Air Force Academy.

I stand corrected. I thought this was a reprint of the article in the Arizona Medical Journal.
It is interesting to read the letters to the Editor that followed the publishing of this historical account which is similar to others JAMA had done on Lincoln, Mozart etc.
The backlash from some was tremendous. I seem to recall some doctors appalled that JAMA would publish the account of Jesus’s death, implying that he was a mythical character and not a real person who breathed like everyone else.
