The Terrorists You Don't Hear About
CNSNews.com ^ | March 04, 2002 | Tom DeWeese

While the public's attention is focused on the prospect of more terrorist acts by Islamic fundamentalists, the terrorists who have posed the greatest threat to property, to scientific inquiry, and to medical research in America are still at large. And they are bragging about their accomplishments!

They are the members of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and Earth Liberation Front (ELF). James Jarboe, the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Counterterrorism Division for domestic terrorism, testified recently for a congressional subcommittee that at least 26 FBI field offices have pending investigations underway regarding these two groups. In addition, 44 Joint Terrorism Task Forces around the nation have taken up the challenge of eco-terrorism.

If you have not heard anything about this on network evening news programs or read much about it in your local daily newspaper, you are not alone. Why has most of the mainstream media virtually ignored the ALF and ELF, shadowy organizations that have carried out 600 attacks since 1996 and are emerging in the eyes of law enforcement officials as the largest and most active US-based terrorist groups?

While many, including myself, have legitimate concerns about the recently passed "Patriot Act" granting vast powers to law enforcement authorities to root out the menace of Islamic terrorism, those powers may also finally yield some results with regard to both ELF and ALF. Since 1996, the cost of their criminality is estimated at $43 million.

In January, ALF had the audacity to release its own report regarding its previous year of arsons, tree spikings, laboratory attacks and other illegal acts committed in the name of saving animals and the environment.

Prior to 9.11, their report cited 137 acts, among which was an arson causing $5.3 million in damage to the University of Washington in May, by far the most destructive act in 2001, excluding the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. ALF also took credit for an April $1.5 million arson in Washington State directed against an egg farm. The result of the UW attack was to destroy research involving trees, rare plants, wetlands and urban landscapes.

The roster of crimes committed by ALF and ELF included the smashing of windows at a Wendy's restaurant in Gaithersburg, MD, and a $700,000 arson at a cotton gin in Visalia, CA. In June, these groups smashed windows at a Bed, Bath & Beyond store in Salt Lake City, but it was New York and Texas that accounted for nearly half of all the animal rights actions with 17 incidents each. Fifteen other States and the District of Columbia also were subject to their domestic terrorism.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) scheduled February 12th as a "National Day of Actions Against State Repression" to protest a congressional hearing held in Washington, DC. At that hearing, ALF/ELF spokesman, Craig Rosebraugh, evoked the Fifth Amendment fifty times in response to questions asked by subcommittee members.

Rep. Scott McInnis (R-CO), chairman of the hearing, called ALF/ELF members "hardened criminals." He described them, saying "They are dangerous, they are well-funded, they are savvy, sophisticated and stealthy, and if their violence continues to escalate, it is only a matter of time before their parade of terror results in a lost human life."

Only now has one industry affected by these terrorist acts begun a public campaign to focus attention on the dangers posed by ALF and ELF. In January, the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), a coalition of restaurant and tavern operators announced they would underwrite an advertising campaign against what they called "notorious and extreme groups" that want to restrict people's food and beverage choices. They are taking aim at PeTA, Greenpeace, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

A 1992 congressional report by the US Office of Technology Assessment, entitled "The Terrorist Threat," quoted the FBI as saying, "PeTA leaders are reported to have acted as intermediaries to the press for the ALF, including distributing a videotape of an ALF break-in." One can only hope that elements of the Patriot Act will now be used to undertake a thorough investigation of PeTA and other such groups.

ALF, ELF and seemingly mainstream advocacy groups have been given free reign to undertake acts of terrorism or to seek public acceptance for such acts. That day must now end. They must been given the same priority as al Qaeda and other Muslim terrorists. Their objectives may differ, but their crimes do not.

Here is something from 'The Insurgent about tree-sits in Oregon if you are interested:

News from Cascadia

Snarl, Cascadia Forest Defenders

Fall Creek Tree Village is still alive after 3 years, 7 months, and the situation is roughly as follows:

Red Cloud Thunder tree-sitters are still occupying trees in the Clark Timber sale. Resistance has remained strong and the activists are demanding complete cancellation of the sale and are declaring a replacement volume deal will not be accepted. A variety of tactics were and are used at Clark to defend the forest, among them tree-sits at the 200ft level. In 1999 a federal judge ruled the U.S. Forest Service was required to do surveys for endangered, threatened, and listed species as required under the Northwest Forest Plan. One of the species they were required to survey for was the Oregon Red Tree Vole, an arboreal rodent that lives its entire life in the canopy of old-growth Douglas fir trees. Activists long suspected the presence of this species at Fall Creek, and after the Forest Service did their own fairly lame surveys, the activists set out to take advantage of the federal ruling and find a lot more evidence that the voles(which are adorable mouse-like creatures)existed at Clark. Over a year-and-a-half, they collected far more samples of the vole nests, recording them carefully and forwarding the data to biologists, who in turn would come back and verify the nests' locations. Each nest find results in a 10 acre buffer. It's a little more complicated than that but the crux of it is that the activists found a lot more data than the goverment.

The result was the U.S. Forest service came out with a "draft" plan recently which indicated all the data collected by both themselves, and the activists data was being taken into account and "wildlife buffers" were being set aside for the Red Tree Voles' habitat. Cascadia Forest Defenders/Red Cloud Thunder then launched a new push to find more nests and get buffer zones established over the 43 acres (out of the 96 original acres) remaining in the sale under the "draft" plan. They worked tirelessly climbing huge old-growth trees(technical and dangerous)until they had found new nest data in virtually every corner of the sale. Biologists have just this week verified the new information and a new, final plan is forthcoming. Activists occupy the trees while awaiting the new plan and they are demanding COMPLETE CANCELLATION. Stay tuned............ T

he North Winberry treesit is still up after three years in the trees. If you have not visited Winberry yet, do so soon and see some of the biggest Douglas Fir and Western Red cedar trees in the Cascadia Bioregion. Maps are available in the Forest Defenders office at 454 Willamette.

The "Slap" treesit was built in unit 21 of the Slap Timber sale this summer. The treehouse was constructed with several women on the building crew, a few men helping when asked, and this resulted in an exceptionally solid perch. An effort to search out the Red Tree Vole took place in all areas of the sale with lots of data collected, which will create buffers over a large part. Stay tuned-hopefully the sale will be cancelled soon.

Another tree-sit was installed in unit 14 of the East Devil timber sale near Salt Creek Falls. The sale ranges from 3,200ft to 5,800ft in elevation and is near Diamond Peak roadless area. Lots of wildlife and native cultural sites are within the area. The effort to locate the Red Tree Vole was strong here too and several nests were located in two different areas of the sale. Data was turned into Biologists and buffers will be created as soon as they can process the information we loaded them down with this summer.

It was a busy spring, summer, and is a busy winter in Cascadia, activists are busy winterizing tree-sits and preparing for the cold weather and rain up in the trees. As you sit in your well heated box this winter, remember the people living in the trees, and what it would be like to actually exist within the realms of mother natures winter storms. If you care enough to help, contact the U of O Forest Action Group located at the Survival Center in the EMU or go to a Cascadia Forest Defenders general meeting (Monday nights at The Growers Market building 454 Willamette 6:00pm) and plug in. May the resistance be strong, and may the resistance be long.....

Contact: C.F.D. 454 Willamette 541-684-8977... but don't bother if you're sexist, homophobic, or violent.

Thanks for the ping. I don't see the necessity of an unconstitutional act, in order to fight terrorists, as opposed to fighting the people. We don't need the Patriot Act, and we don't need ecoterrorists.

LOL! Think it's THAT easy? It ain't. First you need to get a Judge to sign a closure order. Then you use expensive legions of mobilized Forest Service law enforcement officers that are taken away from other jobs to enforce it.

Arresting, transporting, housing, arraigning, and watching the complaint being dismissed by Democratically appointed Federal Judges is also a kicker.

The city of Eugene turns into a drop kicked hornet's nest of anger. Demonstrations at the Federal Courthouse (That is expensive to control and monitor), minions of people infiltrating the closure, standing at the gates, and tormenting FS personnel at USFS stations, and many other events high in angry people and expense to deal with happen.

Think they haven't tried this? It is a headache. I haven't even mentioned how the headache called ELF is right there looking for how they can coattail into it destroying something.

They have tried to wait out activists in the woods. For years and years. Activists like living in the woods. Thousands of people give money, food, clothing, climbing gear, and high praise for the actions of forest defenders.

For every kid in a tree there is five to fifteen on the ground, some in the new forest "hides." For every group of up to sixteen people in the woods, there are hundreds of people in town supporting them.

Your idea is flawed; but I understand how someone who doesn't know what is going on in this fight would suggest it.

And this is the quick, thumbnail explanation. I could sit down and write a paper on this situation that would anger and discourage you upon reading it.

There are also several new sits going up this Spring too. Go figure.

Don't think it ends there either. Research and development of new forest defense tactics and operations orders is an ongoing thing. This is a big business that employs and keeps busy an extremely high number of folks.

And this week the report came out the the enviro-nazi "scientists" who faked the linx hair in WA / Or forests were not only not fired, they were given merit promotions! And the "court" found them not guilty of a crime, but rather of bad scientific decisions, or some such poo. How did we get so far behind and out of the loop to let these people infiltate so much?

Since 1996 the cost of their criminality is estimated at $43 million. ... In January, ALF had the audacity to release its own reports reguarding its previous years of arsons...

So send them the bill!! Hell, it looks like they have admitted to being responsible for specific criminal acts, so why not make them pay reparations? Hit them in the pocketbook with actual losses and major lawsuits that would put them out of business.

... it is only a matter of time before their parade of terror results in lost human life.

How do we know it hasn't done so already? They would, of course, never claim responsibility if such an inadvertent death occurred because of their actions.

RALEY TAKES ON NADER

Bennett Raley, assistant secretary of water and science at the Department of Interior, is talking at the Public Interest and Environmental Law Conference (PIELC) at 1 pm Friday, March 8 at the UO School of Law. Raley, a Bush appointee who oversees the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, shares the lunchtime keynote spot with Ralph Nader, the Green Party's 2000 presidential candidate.

"The Conference has always been a source of controversy and this year will be no different," says Jeff Kuyper, PIELC co-director. "Both Nader and Raley continue to have an impact on our nation's environmental policy, yet their perspectives could not be more opposite. This year's conference attendees will be treated to quite a show."

The PIELC Conference runs March 7-10. To register or for more information, visit www.pielc.uoreogn.edu

You can only bill those you know the name of. ELF and ALF are movements who's players are hiding in the shadows. They organize in cells, and only those who have been caught and incarcerated are vulnerable.

Even if these folks were easy to find, they are rootless, moneyless for the most part, and would do anything to sabotage those winning any judgement from getting any moneies paid them.

They have declared war on the system. Good luck getting blood from that turnip. I am betting no money is paid to Romania if they win the suit in that link.

More like old age- the trackball is a PPR from the days of DOS.... and the rest of the "system" isn't much better. At least it runs Win 95 like the, ahem! "newer" machine so I don't have to keep wondering which OS I'm using!

As to your conclusion that people have been killed by environmentalist is true. Loggers in the past years have been maimed and have died from tree spiking. I do not remember all the specifics but there were a rash of deaths during the Eighties and early Ninties. There were some environmental activists that spiked the trees saying that it was to protect the trees by scaring the Loggers into not knowing which tree in a section was spiked. The goal was to have the chain on the saw dull the teeth or break the chain completely there by stopping the logger from cutting the tree. However, these near sighted individuals did not realize that once the tree was cut the tree has no defenses to protect it self and will eventually die beacuse the bark has lost to much integreity. Even worse, the consequences for the operator of the saw could be more drastic. the minimum was that the chain would dull and not work to the chain on a 5ft+ bar would break, and whip around and slice the operator open, somtimes killing them on the spot. Some who did it bragged that the death was caused not by thier actions of spiking but of the loogers action of cutting the trees (i.e. in the vain of paying for thier crimes to nature.) I have not heard recently of these actions by the environmentalist but I hope not to hear about future spikings.
