The defeat of the amnesty bill is indeed a great day for America. The noble concept of a "Government by the people, for the people" has worked exactly the way our founding fathers intended. Our public serpents have heard the voice of their constituents and acted according to their wishes by defeating this train wreck of a bill.
In the absence of an actual intellectual argument, proponents of amnesty relied on the lowest common denominator of civil public discourse...when you have no facts to back you up, just call your opponent names like doodyhead, racist, bigot, redneck or nativist.
Apparently the elitist left wingers who were eager for new Democratic voters and the elitist Wall Street Journal right wingers who were frothing at the mouth at the idea of a cheap labor pool were shocked. They were used to having their way while the unwashed masses were busy paying attention to Paris Hilton, American Idol or Anna Nicole Smith.
Americans told them in no uncertain terms: We are not stupid. We are performing our civic duty by paying attention to our government. The message is so simple that even a retard can understand it...PROVE TO US THAT YOU CAN ENFORCE THE EXISTING LAWS BEFORE PASSING NEW LAWS THAT YOU CAN'T POSSIBLY ENFORCE.
They claimed that "we haven't read the bill and don't understand it. There are too many moving parts." No. We've read the bill. They haven't. Sure there were some good parts: ending chain migration, increasing the number of visas available for highly skilled employees.
This is certainly not over.
Speaking strictly for myself, I have nothing personally against people trying to come to America to better their lives. Besides the felony crime of breaking into a sovereign nation illegally, the only other "crime" many of these illegals have committed is mowing our lawn, landscaping our yard and picking our fruit. We don't hate anyone.
My parents were first generation LEGAL immigrants. Many of your parents, grandparents and great grandparents came here for the same reason.
We all understand that. What people like Bob Menendez and Mel Martinez don't understand is that when people came here at the turn of the last century there was no welfare state. Come one, come all. If you fail, don't look to the Gubmint to bail you out and provide social services at the taxpayers expense. We are in a different world.
So I am curious and our elected public serpents who were shocked by the outcry from their constituents are too. President Bush is a "lame duck" supposedly. He certainly won't accomplish any new legislative initiatives. However, he still has the power as President to see to it that existing laws are enforced. That means build the fence that was authorized and funded in October of 2006.
Then come back to us and talk about Comprehensive Immigration Reform. If the border were truly secure, would you be in favor of a similar bill?
It's only wrong if your grandparents came from Scotland illegally. Did they?
bump
Interesting page you have there.
How soon we forget....

No, using the Beast’s words, we need to sweep this house.
That's kind of harsh don't you think? Please don't give the libs who are looking for future dependents and voters any ammunition to call American citizens who actually support the rule of law names like "yahoo and bigots".
Here’s why:
1. There is no compelling reason to grant any illegals US citizenship. They made the choice to cross over illegally.
2. Granting 20+ million illegals citizenship and voting rights is an affront to all those who fought and died to protect this Republic...as well as every single law abiding person who’s had to endure years of bureaucratic red tape while trying to emigrate here legally. Granting voting rights to 20+ million illegals who are clueless about the United States, what it means to truly be an American and apparently have little or no wish to assimilate would have dramatic effects on how the US foreign policy is run pertaining to our “neighbors” for years to come. I prefer to have people “in power” who willfully chose to put America (United states) first..... and not worry about filling government positions with people who will dissect this great nation for the pure benefit for others outside our nation.
3. The US taxpayer / citizen needs a break against this oppressive taxation for the benefit of others not born here. Our Hospitals are overloaded and are shutting down at an alarming rate due to the large influx of illegals (non paying patients). Our Schools are being overloaded with illegals. More and more municipalities are having to hire more staff to accommodate illegals. This is having a one two punch effect on all local property taxes. Property taxes are skyrocketing across this country.
Taxes suck. No one likes to pay them, but we need to come down hard on businesses that hire illegals. By not paying SS / FICA / unemployment insurance... these scumbags who willfully chose to hire illegals have an unfair advantage over the legit businesses.
We need a secure border to stop the inflow of illegal workers. Then we need strict workplace enforcement and severe penalties for businesses that hire illegals.
ONLY THEN can we address a “guest worker” program. Every business should compete on an even playing field. right now... the a-holes in Washington, through inaction have Set up a playing field that is totally against the legit business owner. The legit business owner winds up paying an unfair amount of taxes.....because the tax debt is not spread around EVENLY. The only way to keep taxation low....is to have strict workplace enforcement. That way the tax burden will be spread evenly through this land. I would imagine that if this were to be done...the tax revenue’s generated would skyrocket because everyone would then be paying his / her fair share.
This failed bill was way to light on enforcement. It was a shamnesty bill dressed up with a few minuscule enforcement efforts with huge gaping loop holes.
Once again....there is no compelling reason to even link a guest worker program with a “pathway to citizenship”.
We already have a legal mechanism for those who wish to emigrate here. Let’s update it, streamline it and make it more practical. Make sure it is based on a point system skewed towards those illegals with the skills that are needed by our economy. We do not need to import 20 million + low skilled and under educated people. That is a recipe for disaster any way you look at it.
Let’s do what’s right for the US.
Secure the border, then we tackle the issue of the illegals.
i was using absurd hyperbole
If they don't leave, then they will be subject to arrest, fines, forefeiture of property such as cars that they have acquired here without paying our taxes. They will get to stay in tent cities while their cases are processed, and then they will get sent back deep into the interior of their home countries.
They'll start leaving, especially when their employers stop hiring them for fear of jail time, and when their kids can no longer attend school or get free health care.
I’d favor amnesty only on a real case-by-case basis, after strict, stringent, extensive, lengthy background checks. And of course only after a real securing of the border and the ending of the “anchor baby” practice. But, yes.
Dude, come on. You know me. You can give me a better response than “no”. Let me have it.
I’ll play devils advocate and pretend to be Ted Kennedy. (Hold on while I down this Martini):
“er, what do you propose to do with the undocumented citizens already here. Er, we need new liberal Dem voters.”
From wikipedia:
A US-born child cannot in fact sponsor his/her parents for legal immigration to the United States until he/she becomes an adult, and illegal immigrant parents do not gain any additional legal rights based solely on the fact that they have had a child born in the US. However, illegal immigrant parents of US-born children often avoid deportation by immigration judges because they are the biological parents of minors, who have every right to be in the US as citizens.[citation needed] Deporting the illegal parents of US-born children causes the legal breakup of families, and judges are often unwilling to do this until the child is an adult, at which time the child can apply to sponsor their foreign-born parents for US citizenship.[citation needed]
The term “anchor babies” is also used to refer to children born to women who are legally in the US on temporary visas (for example a visitors visa) when the child’s birth is specifically intended[citation needed] to obtain citizenship for the child under US law; however, this is more precisely described as birth tourism. Sometimes the term jackpot baby is used interchangeably with the term anchor baby. This use is also pejorative.
. . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
You see, it is not the anchor baby that is the problem, it is the bleeding heart Judges that cause the problem.
.....Bob
No, if non-citizens were to gain amnesty for breaking the law, why would any legal citizen tote a respect for the law?
Thus, our laws will just be considered breakable and used for personal gain only.
That won't work because of all the anchor babies and phony marriages.
If this is the best we can do, we need to reevaluate our standards.
No amnesty - enforce the laws we have, and award the legal people who follow the rules.
I’m all for that! Give them 60-90 days to pack up and get moving South before the law moves in.
