The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows the top three candidates for the Republican Presidential Nomination are within five points of each other. Its Fred Thompson on top with 22% of the vote followed closely by Rudy Giuliani at 20% and Mitt Romney at 17%. This is one more indication that the race is getting murkier and has no clear frontrunner. Almost matching the total of the top three candidates is the undecided category at 19%. Trailing in the race are John McCain at 11% and Mike Huckabee who earns support from 5% of Likely Republican Primary Voters. (see recent daily numbers).
A recent commentary by Douglas Schoen helps explain why Rasmussen Reports shows a closer race for the nomination than some other polls that focus on interviews with all adults.
A Rasmussen Reports survey released today shows that 27% of Republican voters say they would opt for a third-party pro-life candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination. While those numbers would almost certainly decline by Election Day 2008, the threat of a third-party run may raise questions about the New Yorkers electability.

These are national numbers. The race is tightening.
I guess we can thank Rasmussen and all the other pollsters for the murkiness. ;-)
Daily tracking history - Thompson and Guiliani numbers have dropped a few points, Romney numbers have risen a few points.

Looks fine to me, but I wish Trudy would drop out and leave it to Fred and Romney to duke it out. Mitts’ about as liberal as I care to see a Repub candidate be, Trudy is a bridge too far.
Unexpected Mitt muscle in this poll. It’ll be interesting to see how other polls stack up along with the early state polls.
These numbers will really mean something once we totally overhaul our electoral system .
Haven’t heard too much from “that crowd” in recent days.
I count this as one of our Lords’ many blessing in my life.
I’m guessing more people are gettting involved not just the political junkies like us. Mitt has gone up on Intrade which is more accurate than the polls. Funny how risking money (capitalism) is more accurate than the media (orwellianisn).
Fred Thompson : 22%
Rudy Giuliani: 20%
Mitt Romney: 17%
------------
Total: 59% Not almost matched by 19%
Romney steadily rising nationally - good news.
Gosh. Do they even bother to poll conservatives? And I mean that in the sense of candidates and voters.
Most interesting...

This suggests the recent poll showing a Romney surge in South Carolina was not absurd.
A agree with the poster above. The sooner Guilliani is gone the better. Let’s let Thompson and Romney compete and endure the trial by fire. That’s what a campaign is. Who emerges between those two will be a formidable candidate and has a very good shot at beating Hillary in an environment of Iraq victory.
Old centrist Mitt Boy, flipping and flopping.
No thanks.

Exactly!^^^^^^^^^^^
Mitt in the race will cipher off of Rudy’s north-eastern states. I’d actually like him to stay-in till he takes those states away from Rudy and gives Fred the advantage. The spread of liberalism is effecting the Republican party, and we need two north-eastern politicians fighting against each other to give a front-runner an advantage. As long as Fred does well in the initial primaries...he has good chances.
That’s how I see it at the moment.
