What Would Free Republic Do If Fred Thompson Is Not The Republican Nominee? (Vanity)
December 9 2007 | jveritas

It is very obvious that Fred Thompson is Free Republic most favorite candidate and by far. On the other hand every other top tier Republican candidate, Guiliani, Romney, Huckabee, and McCain are absolutely disdained by most Freepers. Therefore this is the important question:

What would Free Republic do if Fred Thompson is not the Republican Party Nominee?

I’ve asked the same questions you’ve asked and never received answers either. So I guess the answer is JUST VOTE FOR THE “R”.

"What would Free Republic do if Fred Thompson is not the Republican Party Nominee?"

Maybe, "Free Republic" is not a "collective".

Maybe, Free Republic is a discussion board of many points of view.

Maybe, "group think" is reserved for the lefty boards.

I'm on the board almost daily, and I seen pros and cons on all the candidates.

I really like Free Republic, but if the day should come that "free republic" dictates my choice of candidate, then I'll drop it like a hot rock.

Why is Fred worrying you so?

I think we are going to end up with Fred, Mitt or Duncan. McCain is just too scary and Rudy is just to left. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Hmmm... stop and think for a moment.

The first primaries are getting close, and for whatever reasons, good or bad, Huckabee seems to be surging in Iowa and South Carolina, and he may even overtake Romney in both New Hampshire and Michigan. If these primaries were still months off, we might discount the polls. But they are not, and so we ignore the polls at our own peril.

If Romney can't beat Huckabee in at least two of these contests, he is out of the race, and once again proves that "vanity candidacies" - that is, those financed with one's own millions - are often millions down the drain.

Rudy's going to win Florida and the blue/purple states in the Super primary. In the southern states, it will be a slugfest between Huckabee, Thompson, and McCain splitting the hard-conservative votes, with Rudy taking his share of the Republican moderates and northern transplants.

Hunter and Tancredo (who are both solidly on the right side of the issues) won't be factors in ANY of these races. Got to face reality.

After one of the most auspicious beginnings in recent years (at least amongst conservatives), Fred Thompson seems to be fading, fading, fading. Too bad.

Huckabee may be nothing more than a flash in the early pan, but if he can win three of the four early races, watch out.

Even if Rudy doesn't win everywhere, he will run well enough in enough states to either lead in the delegate count or be a contender.

And FreeRepublic will still be here... :)

That's what I think, and I could very well be wrong.

I agree with what you say. Which is why Giuliani MUST NOT BE NOMINATED.

From your tagline:
"(Vote for Frudy McRomsonbee -Turn red states purple in 08!)"

The REAL problem for conservatives is that the red states seem to be "turning purple" by themselves.

The demographic changes and forces at work in the country today are impossible to ignore, and bode hard times ahead for conservatives almost everywhere...

I will support the Republican nominee no matter who he is. Any one of them is miles better than She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Osama Obama or the Breck Girl.

Some on FR, however, will stay home and pout. More power to ya. I hope you like Hillary’s choices for Supreme Court.

Why is Fred worrying you so?

He is not worrying me a bit. I think he will make a very good President and all the Republican nominees except for defeatist Ron Paul will make good to very good Presidents and for sure much better than any of the socialists, abortionists, and defeatists among the democrat candidates.

I’ll happily support Duncan Hunter if he beats Fred for the nomination, but if a sleazy liberal RINO media-dictated candidate is annointed, Fred will STILL have my vote in the general election, even if I have to write his name in.

I've seen this comment from several posters.

Don't you understand that if you try to do that, you are not even casting a legitimate vote, and that your vote won't even register?

When you vote in a presidential election, you are not - let me repeat that for emphasis - ARE NOT - voting for the presidential candidate, be it Fred, or Rudy, or Hillary, or ANYbody.

You are voting for a slate of ELECTORS who will in turn [hopefully] cast THEIR votes for the candidate of your choice when the Electoral College convenes after the general election.

If Mr. Thompson is not the nominee, he is not going to HAVE ANY electors for whom you can cast your [then legitimate] vote.

If you try to write in "Fred Thompson" on the ballot, you may be satisfying your ego, but you are NOT "voting", because you can only cast a true vote if Mr. Thompson has electors to vote for.

Your vote won't be registered. It will simply be ignored.

‘....you will still vote for anybody with an ‘R’ after their name.’

I would vote for any of the current R candidates, who, will fight to protect America. I don’t believe the Dem candidates will do so.

It’s not the ‘R’ after their name, it’s their positions on defending America. Honestly, if by SOME HUGE STRETCH of the imagination....the Parties positions were reversed (Dems strong on defense and R’s not) I’d support the D.
But that’s not happening.....Obama wants to “talk” to Ahmadinajad (?sp)?? Who knows what Hillary will do..

Usually by the time I vote enough states have closed and called a winner that it doesn’t mater whether California goes one way or another.

CA has a lot of electoral votes. They have called a winner before and were WRONG remember.

You should send this to the RNC......for some reason they don’t seem to communicate the serious dangers of a Dem win.

OMG. . .the RNC, in the grips of PC too? Get their e-mails; but do not go 'there' often or often enough, perhaps; but will start checking them out.

Remember Rush; post last election Congressional losses. . .saying that he 'would not be carrying Repub water'. Expressing or alluding to. . .his exasperation that Repubs will NOT rise to the demands of the 'fight' as they refuse to defend themselves; and refuse to attack, by all means necessary; so as to insure a Dem defeat and an absoluteRepub Victory. We are already, in typical mode of Repub dejavu - our own self-created, cyclic, political pandemic. Can they not see the threat by now; and the consequences? Whether or not these candidates follow; the RNC must lead nonetheless!

(Anyway, on this point of engaging the worst of necessities; think Rudy would deliver himself to Hillary's level. . .and fearlessly go after her; and beat her. Less confident that others would do so; despite the necessity here. But she soooo deserves the attention.)

I disagree. Put up a real Conservative (Hunter, Tancredo) and let's see what happens. I'll bet you will be surprised.

The problem for Republicans is that they must meet all three of their base factions: Christian Conservatives, Fiscal Conservatives, and Constitutional Conservatives. While these factions overlap to a great degree, each faction must be catered to, or the candidate will fail.

That is why it is so necessary for all of us to select a candidate that is agreeable to all, lest we cause distress within the party. If all factions can vote for the candidate, then it is like magic- and absolutely unstoppable.

I will vote for the republican nominee whoever he is,
as I have done in every single election since becoming
citizen in 1970.

1972 - Nixon
1976 - Ford
1980 - Reagan
1984 - Reagan
1988 - Bush41
1992 - Bish41
1996 - Dole
2000 - Bush43
2004 - Bush43
2008 - whoever is the nominee

I Don’t waste my vote on 3rd parties or staying home.
