With exactly a week to go until New Hampshire, McCain has pulled ahead of Romney and Clinton has opened back up a double-digit lead in New Hampshire, according to a 7News/Suffolk University poll. McCain gained 12 points since a month ago in the same survey to vault ahead of Romney 31%-25%. Romney had led in the December Suffolk poll 31%-19% over McCain. Giuliani is third with 14%, a three-point drop from 17%. A month ago, Clinton led Obama by 7 points (33%-26%), but now the poll shows her with a whopping 36%-22% lead. Apparently, Clinton has peeled away some of those undecideds from a month ago as that number dropped from 19% to just 12% this month. Edwards comes in third with 14%. (He had 15% in December.) The Republican numbers: McCain 31%, Romney 25%, Giuliani 14%, Huckabee 9%. The Democratic numbers: Clinton 36%, Obama 22%, Edwards 14%.

McCain, if elected President, would be more than glad to extend the olive branch of compromise to the Senator from New York and the Senator from Massachusetts on legislation America needs. He knows they have a valid plan as evidenced by his support and name lent to the ‘Shamnesty’ of 2007.

This is good news in my opinion. It Fred Thompson cannot stay in, I would much rather see McCain go up against Guiliani on Super Tuesday than Romney.
If McCain wasn’t so much for amnesty, then I would be willing to accept him as president (no matter how many other flaws he has). But he is just so arrogantly out of touch on that issue.

I’m surprised that Ron Paul is not doing better in NH. I would think he would finish 2nd place or at the least 3rd.
I used to say I would vote for *any* Republican presidential nominee. I figured they couldn’t possibly nominate anybody who would be as bad as a modern-day brain-dead liberal Democrat.
I’ve changed my mind. Unless somebody can enlighten me, or I come up with it myself between now and election day, if McCain is “it” for the Republicans, I will vote for all *except* president.
The most recent Wall Street Journal articles have finally convinced me that he is not only a RINO, but likely has a screw loose.
YMMV.

As a Senator, John McCain has consistently fought for laws restricting political donations and lobbying by special interests — so his presidential campaign’s ties to lobbyists and special interests strike some observers as curious.
McCain currently has 32 “bundlers” of campaign donations who are lobbyists, more than any other candidate. Rudy Giuliani is closest with 29, and Hillary Clinton has 18.
Among McCain’s occasional advisers is lobbyist John Green of Ogilvy Government Relations. Executive of Ogilvy clients have donated at least $271,000 to the Arizona Republican’s White House campaign, the Washington Post reports.
Another McCain operative is Tom Loeffler, a former Texas congressman who is chairman of the Loeffler Group lobbying firm. The company’s client employees have contributed $118,500, according to the Post.
In March, McCain traveled to a Utah ski resort for J.P. Morgan Chase’s annual leadership conference and mingled with hundreds of top corporate executive.
J.P. Morgan executives have contributed more than $56,000 to McCain’s campaign, two-thirds of it after his Utah appearance.
“It is common for politicians to court big money during a campaign. But private schmooze sessions such as the gathering in Utah pose a particular dilemma for McCain, who has spent a long career decrying ‘special interests’ and politicians who offer special access to them in order to raise money,” the Post observes.
McCain’s campaign manager Rick Davis — himself a former lobbyist — defended the campaign’s relationship with major contributors.
“There’s never been anybody who’s done more to rein in special interests and lobbyists than John McCain,” he said.
“If you give to him, you know there’s no quid pro quo. People give to him because they want him to be president of the United States.”

I can’t stand him but without question will hold my nose and vote for him. He’s still better than any RAT any day of the week. Except Zell Miller, who isn’t an option.
Everyone must put the past aside long enough to think objectively about what will happen to the country if the House, Senate, and White House are under RAT control.
This poll reflects what can be observed in the campaigns. McCain has regained his footing, attracting large crowds and the accompanying media attention. The sober fallout from the Benazir Bhutto assasination completed his gradual rise from the oblivion of the summer. He has the best foreign policy credentials of the GOP field, is a proven Iraq/WOT stalwart, solidly pro-life and has repented of his “amnesty first” immigration views.
I like his seemingly boundless energy and optimism on the campaign trail as well. Best of luck to him in NH and beyond. . .
Agree. Let’s face it, relatively speaking McCain is preferable to Romney, Huck or Giuliani. Oh yeah — and McCain would beat Hillary nearly hands down; he’d put the Upper Midwest (particularly MI) in play and hold all the typical GOP states elsewhere.
I’d love to see Hill try to smear a certified war hero. The backlash would be considerable.
Great. If McCain is the GOP nominee, just sit out the election. That’ll work great. Your non-vote will be one less vote that Hill, Obama or Edwards will need to gain the Presidency. Good strategy, chief. . .
Look, unfortunately we in the U.S. live in a binary political world inhabited by Democrats and Republicans. We’re forced to ask, in most cases, which is “less bad” versus which is best or ideal. That’s just the way it is.
This poll, like all the others, are bunk.
Only 300 "likely" Republican voters were sampled.
