Thompson: Strong values
The Santa Clara ^ | 1/10/08 | Morgan Hunter

For months, I have been searching for a Republican candidate that I can support for president.

I want a candidate who will uphold conservative principles and also win the general election. After watching the coverage of the Iowa Primary, I found my answer: Fred Thompson. His address to the people of Iowa clearly shows his almost Reaganesque oratory and his firm commitment to conservative ideals.

What are these ideals? Personal freedom paired with personal responsibility; limited, low-tax government; confidence in Judeo-Christian values; an embrace of the free market; and a willingness to defend these same ideals by force when necessary.

(snip)

As Thompson has said, "In this campaign, I will be seeking the support of millions of Democrats who no longer believe that they can trust their own party's leadership on the issue of national security," or their "party leadership's taste for high taxes," for that matter.

I agree, and that's why I'm for Fred.

Interesting take on Fred from a college student. I thought ALL young people were voting for Obama.

That's what the MSM and Pollsters are saying.

From the article:

“Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, by contrast, are currently attempting to rationalize their previous liberal positions on Second Amendment rights, abortion, taxation and illegal immigration. John McCain and Mike Huckabee still unabashedly maintain their even more egregious positions on these issues.

Thompson is different. “I entered public life as a conservative,” he said. “I served in the Senate as a strong, consistent conservative with a 100 percent pro-life voting record. And I have the same philosophy today that I had back then ... No one has ever accused me of changing my position on anything for the sake of political expediency ... And in the battle of ideas, we can’t afford a Republican leader who doesn’t have a core philosophy that grounds him.”

The question remains: Will a strong, principled conservative be electable?

Many have said that a shift toward the political center is occurring, and that a more moderate candidate would appease voters’ presumed desire for bi-partisanship. According to New York Times columnist David Brooks, “the last gasp of the Reagan coalition” is occurring as we speak. That is, supporters of Reagan’s former policies are losing support both internally and externally. Such is the conventional wisdom.”

Thompson may have good ideas, but when you run a lazy and inept campaign, you dont get votes. Fred needs to get off his ass and do some work out there. Compare him to Hillary. Fueled by pure evil, she is a political machine. She is relentless and takes nothing for granted. Fred needs to get in the game. If the GOP doesn’t step it up, the witch will stroll back into the White House.

The way Thompson is campaigning and seeming to be low-key, is the same way Reagan campaigned.

I wouldn’t count Fred out....

Unfotunately, too many GOPers rather have a liberal like McAmnesty than Fred.

Can you imagine, it wasnt too long ago, that the GOP nomination would be between the likes of Hunter and Thompson... no liberal GOPer or moderate GOPer would go up against a conservative

Too many complain that Fred “is lazy” and “looks tired”. This was the same thing they said about Ronald Reagan. Only Reagan heard this for 8 years while President

In todays GOP....Reagan would never have been elected..or considered

“Thompson may have good ideas, but when you run a lazy and inept campaign, you dont get votes. “

This is how infectious the media is. They tell you that Fred is lazy so you believe it. How many media outlets talked about Fred’s bus tour campaign throughout Iowa. It probably is what propelled him to third place there.

He is concentrating on South Carolina now. He pretty much blew off New Hampshire because he knows where the real conservatives are. He let his friend McCain have New Hampshire with all of the independents allowed to come in and vote out the will of the republicans in their own primary.

He has a limited budget and must concentrate his resources carefully. Don’t believe the media spin about Thompson being lazy. Just because they say it over and over, does not make it so.

“maybe we need a “i paid for this mic” moment from thompson”

We already got it in the Iowa debate when nurse Ratched asked the candidates to raise their hands if they believe in global warming. He said he’s not going to play any hand games.

You, on the other hand, must have been public schooled, based on your English usage.

agreed....Fred is out there pounding the flesh on a daily basis...it takes alot more work to meet with people one on one, in a bus, than to make a tv commercial and sit back in your private jet and fly all over the place. The ones that say he is lazy are themselves too damn lazy to check out the facts......

I hope you're right, but Fred doesn't seem to have any traction and this is closing fast. Fred and Duncan Hunter appear to be the true conservatives, but they aren't working hard enough and spending enough to contest with Mitt for the conservative GOP vote. I think conservatives are falling in line for Romney because they think he's the only one with a realistic chance of beating McCain, the Arkansas quack, and Guiliani for the nomination.

I fear for the GOP, which means I fear for the country.

Yes, but the RINO supporters just love to keep throwing it out there, almost as much as we like exposing their RINOs for what they are. Unfortunately, informed conservative voters may well be in the minority within the GOP.

I do to...although I’m still praying and holding out hope, that Thompson will pull ahead.

When the “H” “E” “Double hockey sticks” was this imaginary time? Reagan was the abberation not the rule and he had to run against Bush and Connelly. Before Reagan was Nixon with his wage and price controls. After Reagan was Bush I with his tax increases. After Bush I was Dole who was a lifelong compromising Washington insider, then Bush II with his massive increase in spending, new drug programs for seniors and the like. Between Calvin Coolidge and Reagan there wasn’t a single small government conservative who won the Presidency. And between Lincoln and Coolidge the Republican party was the party of the northern industrialists, with lots of government spending on infrastructure and the like and a rejection of state’s rights.

“Unfortunately, informed conservative voters may well be in the minority within the GOP.”

This may be true, the informed part. However, I still believe that conservatives still dominate our party. With that in mind, we the educated have to keep educating our uninformed brothers and sisters. That’s why things like free republic and other forums are so important.

Fred is now at around 9-10% in S Carolina. I’m a supporter, but this should be his element, and he has got to do better, and show it fast. Rich Galen, who is a paid advisor to the Thomspon campaign, wrote on his blog last week that anything less than a strong second place in SC probably means the end of the campaign..What has hurt Fred more than anything, IMHO, is the compressed nature of the primaries..all bunched up. Were they spaced out..when Mitt drops out, most of his supporters would, I believe, go to Fred..but the time is so short..

I hope you’re right. Right now I feel very despondent. I think that Her Thighness is inevitable and the country is going down the toilet.
