BP oil leak: Fallen Deepwater Horizon was tapping second largest oil deposit in the world

The Gulf Deepwater Oil Spill - the Top Kill Attempt

Interesting post on the oildrum.com

http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6493

With appropriate caveats:

BP contracted Schlumberger (SLB) to run the Cement Bond Log (CBL) test that was the final test on the plug that was skipped. The people testifying have been very coy about mentioning this, and you’ll see why.

SLB is an extremely highly regarded (and incredibly expensive) service company. They place a high standard on safety and train their workers to shut down unsafe operations.

SLB gets out to the Deepwater Horizon to run the CBL, and they find the well still kicking heavily, which it should not be that late in the operation. SLB orders the “company man” (BP’s man on the scene that runs the operation) to dump kill fluid down the well and shut-in the well. The company man refuses. SLB in the very next sentence asks for a helo to take all SLB personel back to shore. The company man says there are no more helo’s scheduled for the rest of the week (translation: you’re here to do a job, now do it). SLB gets on the horn to shore, calls SLB’s corporate HQ, and gets a helo flown out there at SLB’s expense and takes all SLB personel to shore.

6 hours later, the platform explodes.

Pick your jaw up off the floor now. No CBL was run after the pressure tests because the contractor high-tailed it out of there. If this story is true, the company man (who survived) should go to jail for 11 counts of negligent homicide.

This is an impeachable offense.

Rs need to get a special prosecutor working on this when they take the majority in Congress in 2010.

http://bigjournalism.com/acary/2010/05/25/where-is-the-msms-call-for-a-special-counsel-in-the-alleged-bribe-offered-to-joe-sestak/

Chime in with your theories on what’s going on here, but Robert Gibbs sweats profusely whenever the media asks a question about the bribe the White House offered Joe Sestak to drop out of the Pennsylvania primary so that Arlen Specter could have won the Democrat nomination.

Gibbs flat out refuses to answer these questions.  If Saturday Night Live really did its job, they’d lampoon this by having Gibbs start reading favorite family recipes instead of talking about what he was asked.  ”Why did the White House offer Sestak that bribe?”.  ”Uh, here’s Aunt Sally’s pound cake recipe.  First, you need some butter, then…”

It really is that bad.

Our gut feeling is this business has legs...

Notice that Axelwad keeps saying “there is no evidence that Sestak was offered a job for dropping out”. He didn’t say they didn’t offer him a job. He said there is no evidence that they offered him a job. Lawyer speak.

Obama’s border Kabuki: Don’t believe the hype; Update: Meddling Mexico dictates how U.S. should use its National Guard

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 25, 2010 03:34 PM

Scroll for updates…

Photoshop credit: Applecross Media and Big Fur Hat

The most glaring sign that President Obama’s announcement of border funding and National Guard troops is one big, phony charade? He apparently didn’t even bother to let the governor of besieged Arizona, Gov. Jan Brewer, know about it. Via Yahoo News:

The Obama administration plans to announce Tuesday that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security, an Arizona congresswoman said.

Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also said in a statement released Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security.

Part of Giffords’ district borders Mexico.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s spokesman said the governor hadn’t been told of the move prior to her office being contacted by The Associated Press and had no immediate comment.

I called out the Bush administration and Republicans countless times when they used border security as a campaign ploy and performed Get Tough Theater only to flake out on systemic immigration enforcement reform — and then drop the shamnesty shoe.

This is no different. Both political parties in Washington reek on the issue.

The only thing worse than open-borders Obama exploiting our illegal immigration woes is open-borders Johnny-come-lately John McCain continuing to do the same.

Until politicians with proven integrity and commitment to securing this country against invasion step into the leadership vacuum, Arizona’s DIY policy on border security is the only trustworthy one:

Do It Yourself.

***

Update: GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions responds:

U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement today regarding reports that President Obama plans to request funding for 1,200 National Guard troops to be sent to the U.S.–Mexico border:

“The only thing that matters is whether the president—the Chief Executive and the top law enforcement officer of the country—is personally committed to ending illegality at the border. Announcing and taking specific steps can be helpful, but only if it’s part of a determined and consistent effort to fix the problem. The president’s decision to send up to 1,200 troops to the border, while helpful, will not fix the problem. Indeed, it is less than a third of the troops ordered to the border by President Bush.

“Just days ago, members of President Obama’s administration gave Mexican President Felipe Calderón a standing ovation as Calderón proceeded to slander the state of Arizona for its efforts to protect its citizens. President Obama’s chief immigration officer, John Morton, announced that he might not enforce immigration crimes reported by Arizona officials. And, both the Attorney General and the Homeland Security Secretary have attacked the Arizona law, though they later admitted to having never actually read it.

“It is critical that President Obama make border security a true priority and send a clear signal that his administration is dedicated to consistently enforcing the rule of law. Sending National Guard troops to the border can be an important step in the right direction, but it should be followed with a commitment to vigorous worksite enforcement, full cooperation with state and local law enforcement officials, strong support for completion of the border fence, and all other necessary border measures. If these policies are resolutely done, the massive current illegality will be dramatically improved.”

Update: Mexico tells us how to police our border:

Regarding the Administration’s decision to send 1,200 National Guard servicemen to the US Southern border, the Government of Mexico trusts that this decision will help to channel additional US resources to enhance efforts to prevent the illegal flows of weapons and bulk cash into Mexico, which provide organized crime with its firepower and its ability to corrupt.

Additionally, the Government of Mexico expects that National Guard personnel will strengthen US operations in the fight against transnational organized crime that operates on both sides of our common border and that it will not, in accordance to its legal obligations, conduct activities directly linked to the enforcement of immigration laws.

Israel Prepares For The Worst From Iran

North Korea gets army battle-ready: Report

Oh well, it was all more or less predicted 7 months ago here on FR right after the famous November Tokyo "Bow" by Obama, but really a no-brainer...many of us saw it coming. Because we know how Asians in general and North Koreans in particular think and react to IMAGERY. Potent imagery:

"To: Candor7 Yep. This brilliant man just really stepped in the guano, didnt he, here in Asia? They will play him like a stradivarious all around Asia now, particularly in Beijing, and even where he is not going, in enemy Pyongyang. This was the tone he set at the OAS meeting where Chavez stepped up and used him, whereupon Zelaya in Honduras was immediately emboldened to try to seize unending power through a referendum coup and had to be constitutionally removed, I am convinced (looking at the timeline). This is dangerous. This imagery can become the precursors to the precursors to war, because it emboldens the enemy in their psych profiling of our leaders and whether they are made of "the stuff" or not. Now watch North Korea REALLY start to test him, to rattle his cage to see if he gets the squirts, by stepping up provocations in the Yellow (West) Sea along the NLL and the DMZ, prior to him going to Seoul next week. 211 posted on 11-14-2009 16:28:04 by AmericanInTokyo"

Son of a Bitch! Read this:

These people had better PRAY that this “top kill” thing works, otherwise Obama is toast, and I mean for good.

Because if they don’t stop this oil leak RIGHT NOW, the ocean currents will carry this oil around Florida and up the eastern seaboard. This will ruin business and tourism in these states for years.

And when they claim that this wasn’t their problem, they will find that the law tells them otherwise. This statute from 1990, enacted in the wake of Exxon-Valdez, gives FULL RESPONSIBILITY to the Federal Government. Not BP. IOW, Obama’s team was supposed to be in charge right away.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: Death of the Postmodernist Dream. “As crises mount abroad and voters’ anger grows at home, Obama’s dream of a new world order has died a quiet death. . . . So the welfare state is discredited. In the past, we used to be warned that static population growth, vast public-sector employment, early and generous retirement benefits, and high taxes were not sustainable. In recent years, those lectures were caricatured as partisan or hypothetical. No longer. The Greek meltdown — with Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain on the brink — has shown that European socialism does not work. Bankruptcy, not politics, is the final arbiter: Individuals, firms, and nations either buy particular bonds or they don’t. And a nation like Greece, in turn, either pays what it has borrowed or it doesn’t. All the op-eds in the New York Times cannot change that fact.”

Thugocracy 2.0--

New Black Panther Party Hosts National Black Power Convention This Weekend In Atlanta

The Truth about Mexican immigration

An American working in Mexico

From the other side of the fence...

"I spent five years working in Mexico. I worked under a tourist Visa for three months and could legally renew it for three more months. After that you were working illegally. I was technically illegal for three weeks waiting on the FM3 approval.

"During that six months our Mexican and U.S. attorneys were working to secure a permanent work visa called a 'FM3'. It was in addition to my U.S. passport that I had to show each time I entered and left the country. Barbara's was the same, except hers did not permit her to work.

"To apply for the FM3, I needed to submit the following notarized originals (not copies): 1. Birth certificate for Barbara and me. 2. Marriage certificate. 3. High school transcripts and proof of graduation. 4. College transcripts for every college I attended and proof of graduation. 5. Two letters of recommendation from supervisors I had worked for at least one year. 6. A letter from the St. Louis Chief of Police indicating that I had no arrest record in the U.S. and no outstanding warrants and, was "a citizen in good standing". 7. "Finally, I had to write a letter about myself that clearly stated why there was no Mexican citizen with my skills and why my skills were important to Mexico. We called it our 'I am the greatest person on Earth' letter. It was fun to write."

"All of the above were in English that had to be translated into Spanish and be certified as legal translations, and our signatures notarized. It produced a folder about 1.5 inches thick with English on the left side & Spanish on the right."

"Once they were completed Barbara and I spent about five hours, accompanied by a Mexican attorney, touring Mexican government office locations and being photographed and fingerprinted at least three times at each location, and we remember at least four locations where we were instructed on Mexican tax, labor, housing, and criminal law and that we were required to obey their laws or face the consequences. We could not protest any of the government's actions or we would be committing a felony. We paid out four thousand dollars in fees and bribes to complete the process. When this was done we could legally bring in our household goods that were held by U.S. Customs in Laredo, Texas. This meant we had rented furniture in Mexico while awaiting our goods. There were extensive fees involved here that the company paid. We could not buy a home and were required to rent at very high rates and under contract and compliance with Mexican law."

"We were required to get a Mexican driver's license. This was an amazing process. The company arranged for the licensing agency to come to our headquarters location with their photography and fingerprint equipment and the laminating machine. We showed our U.S. license, were photographed and fingerprinted again and issued the license instantly after paying out a six dollar fee. We did not take a written or driving test and never received instructions on the rules of the road. Our only instruction was to never give a policeman your license if stopped and asked. We were instructed to hold it against the inside window away from his grasp. If he got his hands on it you would have to pay ransom to get it back."

"We then had to pay and file Mexican income tax annually using the number of our FM3 as our ID number. The company's Mexican accountants did this for us and we just signed what they prepared. It was about twenty legal size pages annually."

"The FM3 was good for three years and renewable for two more after paying more fees."

"Leaving the country meant turning in the FM3 and certifying we were leaving no debts behind and no outstanding legal affairs (warrants, tickets or liens) before our household goods were released to customs."

"It was a real adventure and if any of our Senators or Congressmen went through it once they would have a different attitude toward Mexico. The Mexican government uses its vast military and police forces to keep its citizens intimidated and compliant. They never protest at their capitol or government offices, but do protest daily in front of the United States Embassy. The U.S. Embassy looks like a strongly reinforced fortress and during most protests the Mexican military surrounds the block with their men standing shoulder to shoulder in full riot gear to protect the Embassy. These protests are never shown on U.S. or Mexican TV. There is a large public park across the street where they do their protesting. Anything can cause a protest such as proposed law changes in California or Texas."

Please feel free to share this with everyone who thinks we are being hard on the illegals.

Carville’s a liar. Of course, he knows why obama is doing nothing. And Carville would approve of this tactic if the disaster were anywhere but his own back yard.

Obama’s doing nothing in order to capitalize on a crisis; the hope among the Axelrod-Emanuel-Obama axis of evil is that the environmental damage will be so severe and long lasting that big oil will be forever demonized in the minds of all Americans, and domestic drilling will be doomed for all time.

And the dirty little secret is that, even if he did decide to act, even with the power of the entire US executive department at his disposal, he wouldn’t know what to do...

Gulf Oil Disaster--Obama's Katrina

WRONG! President Bush was planning for Katrina BEFORE she ever made landfall. It was Ma Blanco and Ray "Chocolate City" Nagin who dropped the ball on preparations for the hurricane. Even afterwards, it was the responsibility of the State's Governor to ask the President for assistance, though she was in charge of her own National Guard, so she could have sent them to NO at any time.

In Katrina, the Bush Administration had the Coast Guard in the air within 24 hours, plucking people off their rooftops. FEMA was waiting outside the city, not being allowed to go in because the media was putting out reports (erroneous it turns out) that rescue workers were being fired on by who knows who! FEMA wasn't going to place its folks in harms way, so they held off til there was protection for them. The blame for so many people living in squalid conditions until FEMA could get there should be laid squarely at the feet of the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana.

On the other hand, as soon as this BP accident occurred, whatever Federal agency in charge of responding to this sort of thing should have been on the horn IMMEDIATELY to the President, who could have called on the Navy and Coast Guard who could have begun action to contain the spill closer to the site. Apparently the person who was supposed to be in charge of those things either didn't KNOW they were in charge, or they simply didn't bother to do what they're supposed to do. OR it's possible that Obama WAS informed, but his 'get out the minority vote' tour was too important to be interrupted.

Yesterday, hackers changed the message on one of the ubiquitous portable illuminated traffic signs in Florida. From NBC Miami, we get this report:

A highway sign flashing “NO LATINOS NO TACOS” greeted drivers on the Palmetto Expressway in Northwest Miami-Dade, after hackers managed to alter it early Tuesday morning.

The sign was in the northbound side of the 826, right near the Northwest 25th street exit.

It’s unknown how long the sign had been flashing the message, but by 6 a.m., members of the Florida Highway Patrol and a road crew had turned the sign away from the highway and were working to erase the message.

Almost immediately the MSM and left-wing blogs (like this one) tagged the prank as right-wing racism. Seems that everyone has forgotten about this unadulterated image:

According to the race-baiters, illegal immigrants and legal hispanics are way too stooopid to figure out the complexity of a programmable road sign, so it’s gotta be the evil Mr. Whitey McConservative. Good thing that the lovely and gracious Missus X is a Latina, because I’d never be able figure out how to make tacos or burritos on my own.

Meanwhile, this was spotted near Copperhill, Tennessee:

Much of today’s racism is promoted by the left, just like it always has been. And because of it, we have another post for an Overnight Open Thread.

Lawbreaking: There's only one way to find out if Pennsylvania's Democratic Senate nominee, Joe Sestak, is telling the truth about the White House bribe offer: Have a prosecutor place him under oath.

The White House has a real, live snowballing scandal on its hands. And Rep. Sestak, who won the Senate primary against Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-Democrat Sen. Arlen Specter, is painting himself into a corner it will be tough to get out of before November.

In February, then repeatedly since, the maverick Democrat claimed that a White House aide offered him a big government job if he wouldn't run against Specter.

That's a felony, pure and simple. The Daily Caller this week featured the text of three areas of federal statute that apply, which House Oversight Committee ranking Republican Darrell Issa of California cited in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder calling for a special prosecutor.

One, 18 USC 600, prohibits promising "any employment, position, compensation, contract, appointment or other benefit, provided for or made possible in whole or in part by any Act of Congress ... in connection with any primary election" under penalty of fine or prison or both.

A second, 18 USC 211, prohibits soliciting or receiving "any money or thing of value, in consideration of the promise of support or use of influence in obtaining for any person any appointive office or place under the United States."

READ THE WHOLE THING. Just Damn...

James Carville loves Louisana the way we love Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Texas — some of our own home towns and states.  You don’t mess with Texas, and you don’t f*** with Cleveland, not on our watches.  No matter how old we get, or what city we currently live in, we have that strong attachment to where we came from — and we would do anything we could to strike back against those who hurt our home towns in any way.

So, that makes us wonder what’s going through the mind of Ragin’ Cajun James Carville — Democrat operative to the core, but Louisiana native at his heart.

Carville’s an interesting bird, to put it mildly...

Read it all- it's good writing- a sample:

"Remember, people, when Obama campaigned in 2008 he stood on pedestals in the capitals of Europe and declared himself to be sent from the stars to “lower the oceans, plug the hole in the ozone, and usher in a new era of Hope and Change”.  He waived his hand, Christ-like, and klieg lights ignited from the stage, the way the band members of KISS used to do, only with less makeup and better costuming."

I just saw the rant Carville made against Obama. His beautiful wife was right next to him shaking her head in disgust and AGREEMENT with her husband. I never saw the two of them agree on much of anything, but it brought a smile to my face to see this.  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20006016-503544.html

I think Obama and his staff failed to grasp the enormity of the problem. Whoever thought it was a great idea for him to go on two vacations, play golf (twice in the past week), play basketball (daily), have a party for Mexico (two months early so they could politicize Arizona), go campaigning for Boxer TWICE, and have the usual Wednesday cocktail parties was NOT thinking straight. It is becoming obvious what this president’s priorities are. As this situation worsens and ordinary Americans see the damage, this president is mud.

PRESS CONFERENCE FOLLIES: Obama: Um, I’m not sure if the MMS director was fired or resigned.  Obumbler lurches onward...

A man has his priorities, you know.
Obama will hold a few more photo ops before addressing the BP oil spill disaster today.

President Barack Obama, flanked by Vice President Joe Biden, left, and former President Bill Clinton, right, pose for a photo with the U.S. World Cup soccer team under the North Portico of the White House in Washington, Thursday, May 27, 2010. (AP)

Political Punch reported:

This morning, President Obama will meet with the NCAA men’s basketball champion Duke Blue Devils at the White House to honor their 2009-2010 championship season in the Rose Garden.

Keeping up the sports theme, the president and the vice president will take a photo with the U.S. World Cup soccer team and former President Bill Clinton, who is chairing the 2018 World Cup bid, on the North Portico. The White House has previously announced that Vice President Biden and Jill Biden will attend the World Cup in South Africa next month.

Afterward, the president will a private have lunch with President Clinton in the Private Dining Room.

In the afternoon, the President will deliver remarks on the BP oil spill and the conclusions of his ordered 30-day safety review and hold a press conference in the East Room.

The president will announce standards to strengthen oversight of the industry and enhance safety, a first step in a process that the independent Presidential Commission will continue, a White House official says.

In the meantime, the moratorium on permits to drill new deepwater wells will continue for a period of six months

Obama To Appear on Coast Guard Ship With "Plug the Damn Hole! Mission Accomplished" Sign

—Ace

I made up that last part, but my oh my, the victory laps this guy is going to take after letting oil gout into the Gulf for 36 days.

When he makes his Memorial Day photo-op here, I expect the letter "I" to be used an awful lot in speaking of the disaster arrested; on the other hand, I expect the letters "BP" to be used a lot when speaking of the month before.

Now that the flood of oil was stopped, they can safely admit how much oil they had been allowing into the Gulf:

Allen also said that later today, an interagency team will release a revised estimate of how much oil was flowing from the well into the Gulf. The Coast Guard has estimated the flow at 5,000 barrels a day, but independent estimates suggest it is much higher -- perhaps tens of thousands of barrels a day.

You might think that this could help the cause of energy production a little. A Worst Case Scenario has been handled (we think), after all. But you'd be wrong: Obama's cancelling licenses for offshore drilling.

'Tea Party' flag rankles some

Flag, one of nation's oldest, causes stir after being raised over Town Common

By Ted Hayes

WARREN — The Warren Fire Department drew fire Friday morning when members raised one of the nation’s oldest — but these days, controversial — flags from one of three flagpoles they maintain at the Warren Town Common.

Their flying of the Gadsden Flag, a Revolutionary War-era flag depicting a coiled rattlesnake with the slogan “Don’t Tread On Me” below it, angered some residents because though it was originally created to protest the British government prior to and during the American Revolution, it has become a symbol to some of the American Tea Party movement....

[The Fire Chief who raised it said:] “It was only done for history’s sake. If people got offended I apologize. I just hope the American flag isn’t offending anyone, becaue that’s one flag I’ll never take down.

That offends all the same people, but they know better than to admit it.

Worst Press Conference Since " I Am Not A Crook"

As Shawn mentioned below, the Obama press conference today was literally unbelievable. The "checkers moment" ("daddy, did you plug the hole"?) he tried to insert in the presser came after an hour of unctuous lecturing and evasion. This may have been the most disastrous presidential press news conference since Nixon's famous "I am not a crook" moment.

It's hard to imagine a Republican president getting away with the weasel words offered today by Barack Obama. The President couldn't determine if MMS head Elizabeth Birnbaum was fired or she resigned. Even the Obama bread carriers at CBS were skeptical:

Elizabeth Birnbaum's departure was first reported as a "firing." Later, a "resignation." When asked for clarity, President Obama told the press corps today he had no idea.

"Did she resign," asked CBS White House Correspondent Chip Reid. "Was she fired? Was she forced out? And if so, why?"

"I found out about her resignation today," the president answered, "so I don't know the circumstances in which this occurred."

An incredulous press corps followed up.

"How is it that you didn't know about Ms. Birnbaum's resignation/firing before?" asked another reporter.

Mr. Obama: "Well, you're assuming it was a firing. If it was a resignation, then she would have submitted a letter to Mr. Salazar this morning at a time when I had a whole bunch of other stuff going on... Come on, I don't know. I'm telling you I found out about it this morning. So I don't yet know the circumstances, and Ken Salazar has been in testimony on the Hill."

After unequivocally stating that he owned and controlled every aspect of the BP oil spill catastrophe, this President doesn't know if his own Minerals and Management Service Director, which had oversight authority of the BP, was fired or resigned? He found out about it just this morning? What we need to know, actually, is who owns Interior Secretary Ken Salazar: the President or Congress?

Then came this whopper from Fox News about the Sestak job kick back/bribe allegation that simply won't go away:

President Obama said Thursday that the White House is preparing to issue a formal explanation regarding the allegation that it offered Rep. Joe Sestak a job to drop out of the Democratic primary race against Sen. Arlen Specter.

The president, addressing the matter in public for the first time since the Pennsylvania congressman leveled the claim in February, said the statement should answer questions about the claim and insisted "nothing improper" happened.

"There will be an official response shortly on the Sestak matter," Obama said, when asked about the issue by Fox News at the president's press conference. "I mean shortly -- I don't mean weeks or months. ... I can assure the public that nothing improper took place."

This form of "I'll get back to you on that" answer is truly outrageous. Even the genuflecting hard core liberals in the White House Press Corps had trouble swallowing that command. Is there anything that this president believes he can't make happen with his ability to turn a phrase and make his listeners disabuse themselves of doubt? As Allah noted, via Breitbart:

"White House cover-up of Sestak job offer not quite finished yet."

What makes me think this inexperienced young President, a recipient of the odd combination of a nation's goodwill and racial guilt, has suddenly found himself wagering greatly on the outcome of one press conference? (That was Charles Krauthammer's point tonight on Fox News) Barak Obama did not have to hold this presser today but he did, perhaps because of a confluence of events that were bearing down on him: the Sestak matter, the BP disaster, his falling poll numbers, the looming 2010 midterms and maybe James Carville's unhinged and unguarded critique of the president this weekend. So why did he do it? And perform so poorly?

This president is not just losing the ideological battle spectacularly. He is being consumed by a tidal wave of events that only an experienced executive can effectively manage. In short, he's in over his head and we will suffer the consequences.

The first (second) oil spill head rolls: Obama “fires” MMS head; Update: Obama assails dumb Americans for failing to appreciate his rescue efforts, whiffs on MMS questions, drags Malia into the fray

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 27, 2010 10:49 AM

Scroll down for Obama press conference updates…

News leaking ahead of President Obama’s scheduled 12:45pm Eastern press conference today: the first head has been delivered.

Via AP:

Democratic sources say the Obama administration has fired the head of the U.S. Minerals Management Service in response to blistering criticism over lax oversight of offshore drilling.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity before the official announcement, tell The Associated Press that President Barack Obama will announce the decision Thursday.

Meanwhile, there are reports that BP’s “Top Kill” strategy to plug the leak is working:

BP has stopped the flow of oil and gas from a ruptured well into the Gulf of Mexico, a US official told local media.

The company’s “top kill” effort has “stabilised the wellhead”, Coast Guard commander Thad Allen said, adding that it was too early to declare success.

This is the first step, using mud, in BP’s plan to seal the well for good with cement.

Eleven workers were killed in the initial explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig five weeks ago.

Make that the second head to hit the ground. As I noted last week, MMS official Chris Oynes resigned after news of the agency’s 2009 safety award for Deepwater Horizon surfaced.

Critics on both the left and right want to know: What about Heckuva Job Kenny Salazar?

***

1:00pm Eastern Summary of Obama’s oil spill remarks: Bush at fault. Cozy regulators at fault. Solution: More government, no more drilling.

Obama defends his sluggish response by criticizing dumb Americans. Bottom line: You all are too stupid and uninformed to realize that this has been his “highest priority” and that the White House has been “singularly focused” on the oil spill.

Obama: “Those who think we were slow in our response or lacked urgency don’t know the facts.”

That’s always his excuse.

Obama writes his own self-aggrandizing history: “I’m confident that people are going to look back and say that this administration was on top of what was an unprecedented crisis.”

1:42pm Eastern. Obama insists he is working with full urgency on the issue, but refuses to take ownership of firing MMS head Liz Birnbaum. He said he only found out about it this morning when he was “busy with other things” (um, wasn’t he “singularly focused” on oil spill?) and that he is unclear about the circumstances of her stepping down.

Dragging his daughters into the public fray again: “Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?”

When you can’t solve a problem, change the terms of reference so that you can.

President Obama in a newly released document has redefined national security policy in terms of domestic policy.  Blaming the Bush administration for relying on “military might”, Obama declared that what was important was the home front. David Martin of CBS News writes “if you had to pick one sentence in this 52 page document which defines President Obama’s National Security Strategy it would be this: “the foundation of American leadership must be a prosperous economy.”  By implication President Obama is going to give America that prosperous economy in order to defend it. But can he do it?

"The question is can Obama’s magical thinking of ‘Extend and Pretend” “prosperity” extend past the elections of 2010? or even 2012?  Everyone else will just have to fend for themselves while we conduct our civil war at home. It is just as well because the Ignoramus in Chief can’t even be counted on to fight on the right side as we saw just last year in South America where he backed the attempted coup in Honduras."

"Whatever schadenfreude one might be tempted to feel should be weighed against the real dangers coming on fast. The dangers that were supposed to be held off by the stimulus, cash for clunkers and green shoots, and green jobs, and America’s new moral standing in the world. The perils that were supposed to have been banished by the address to Muslim world in Cairo university, the moment the seas began to fall, grand bargains, wars only of necessity, health care “reform”, teaching moments, engagement, strategic patience and now, a new national security model. All those menaces, both real and imagined, are coming on fast.

“We have a President!” Andrew Sullivan declared in response to BHO’s reluctance to meet McChrystal for months. But maybe it was only the sound of a man playing President that he heard; not a President really. "

"...no one is at the wheel. Just a guy who makes one speech after the other..."

"In fairness, President Obama is entirely a product of the political system and the gatekeeping system that thrust him forward. Even if he was never elected someone like him would have been. The ethnicity is immaterial...He just played the part. And maybe society deserved him too... "

Mark Steyn, reflecting on Western folly says that by rights, "We’re too broke to be this stupid" , funding one crapola program after the other. After enumerating ever misbegotten program he can think of, Steyn writes:

By the way, where does the government get the money to fund all these immensely useful programs?
According to a Fox News poll earlier this year, 65 per cent of Americans understand that the government gets its money from taxpayers, but 24 per cent think the government has “plenty of its own money without using taxpayer dollars.” You can hardly blame them for getting that impression in an age in which there is almost nothing the state won’t pay for. I confess I warmed to that much-mocked mayor in Doncaster, England, who announced a year or two back that he wanted to stop funding for the Gay Pride parade on the grounds that, if they’re so damn proud of it, why can’t they pay for it? He was actually making a rather profound point, but, as I recall, he was soon forced to back down. In Canada, almost every ethnocultural booster group is on the public teat. Outside Palestine House in Toronto the other week, the young Muslim men were caught on tape making explicitly eliminationist threats about Jews, but c’mon, everything else in Canada is taxpayer-funded, why not genocidal incitement? We’re rich enough that we can afford to be stupid.

But what happens when the money runs out, the check kiting no longer works?

“…24 per cent think the government has “plenty of its own money without using taxpayer dollars.”

When Obama came down to Florida to help announce the new Sunrail high speed train between Miami, Orlando and Tampa one local mayor was quoted as saying:

“I hope the government will pay for the entire cost of the train so that the taxpayers don’t have to.”

Here’s an example of... government at work:

The city of Vernon, CA has 91 inhabitants. The city manager just retired and draws almost $500,000 a year in CalPers pension:

Victor Davis Hanson correctly sees Obama as a person who demands perfection from the United States while asking the rest of the world to merely be ok. The Republicans are blowing it by not exposing the lie of the Obama Boom

The unprecedented economic boom unleashed by Obama’s debt spending as claimed by Newsweek and Bob Beckel, has slowed from 5.6% in the 4th quarter of 2009 to just 3% in the 1st quarter of 2010. The Stock Market has declined 11% in the last month due to the European debt crisis and Obama’s spending policies. These facts don’t matter. The media is still pushing the Obama boom theme and it seems to be having an effect. Two months ago the GOP had an average lead in the Congressional races of 3-5%, now in most polls they are trailing the Democrats. Clearly the Progressive media’s propaganda is working and the GOP is blowing it by not getting aggressive. The 3% growth is being called healthy in contrast to the Bush years when it was called stagnant.

"OMG! These stupid people need to be locked in a cell and forced to read Economics, 24/7. And not the Keynesian BS, but the real stuff. Hayek, Friedman, Mises, Rothbard, for starters."

Snort, I used to buy into the "overworked, underpaid poor teacher" spiel -- before I actually started teaching.  It's not an easy job, but it isn't that awful either.

And now, now that I watch the local teachers driving around in brand spanking new vehicles, sending their kids to fancy expensive camps, doing fancy remodels on their homes or buying newer bigger ones (paying for unheard of luxuries even 10 years ago on a teacher's salary back then) -- while I'm scraping to pay my mortgage, crossing my fingers that my 12 yo. car keeps running, and see my taxes going up, up, up while at the same time the schools are having more and more problems and they scream for more and more money...suddenly I don't feel the warm, fuzzy love for the poor, poor teachers anymore.

Eff them and the union they flew in on -- this keeps up they will need protection from the pitchforks, and some of them *used to be* my good friends (not anymore, they only hang out with other teachers, or school or county board members now...movin' on up and all that).

Obama - "Trying everything" except vacuuming oil spill from sea like Saudis did

The Secret, 700-Million-Gallon Oil Fix That Worked — and Might Save the Gulf

The Drill Is Gone

Energy: An administration never enthusiastic about offshore drilling is using the Gulf oil spill as an excuse to suspend Arctic exploration. Who could've seen that coming? Now we'll be more dependent on foreign oil.

Suspicions in some quarters that the administration was being deliberately lax in its response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in order to pursue a larger, anti-domestic energy agenda were met with derision. But if not deliberate, the effect is the same as the administration prepares to shut down our search for new oil.

President Obama on Thursday announced a suspension of offshore drilling in the Arctic until the causes and solutions to the Gulf spill are found. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a report delivered to the White House on Thursday that he will not consider applications for permits to drill in the Arctic until 2011. Shell Oil was poised to begin exploratory drilling this summer on leases as far as 140 miles offshore.

The irony here is that it's been the reluctance of Congress and the White House to allow more onshore development of our vast untapped oil and natural gas energy reserves that has forced oil companies such as Shell and British Petroleum to go farther and farther offshore to drill deeper and deeper in riskier waters.

"I am frustrated that this decision by the Obama administration to halt offshore development for a year will cause more delays and higher costs for domestic oil and gas production to meet the nation's energy needs," Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, said in a statement. As with nuclear power, domestic oil exploration will now be consigned to the "study forever, develop never" category.

Government-Funded Jihad

Darrel Issa (R-C.A.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-M.E.) are demanding answers following the Investigative Project on Terrorism’s discovery that taxpayer money is going to the radical Dar al-Hijrah mosque of Falls Church, Virginia. The revelation is an unsettling reminder of how jihadists are using America’s freedoms and ineptitude of the government to their advantage.

The Investigative Project on Terrorism has found that the Census Bureau has been paying Dar al-Hijrah about $23,000 per month since November 2008 to rent space in one of its buildings. The State Department has used the mosque in its videos about America’s Muslim community and sent students from its Foreign Service Institute to Dar al-Hijrah this month.

Dave Gaubatz, a former Special Agent with the U.S. Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations, and author of Muslim Mafia, described Dar al-Hijrah to FrontPage as “Wahhabi quarter,” in reference to the oppressive form of Islam practiced and promoted by Saudi Arabia.

Tavis Smiley: More Christians Than Muslims Blow Up People Every Single Day

Not only does this man of the Left believe what he is saying, but he does it with passion and conviction. Smiley--a so-called Christian--is the product of a liberal education. Liberalism in America has triumphed. Its disciples use the Christian label only for leftist political means. The label is a badge of authenticity and authority in order to destroy the foundation of the structure they claim to live in.

For liberal "Christians" like Smiley, the old America was a concentration camp where blacks, Indians, women, and homosexuals were persecuted, while the America-to-come--always just a little beyond the horizon--is a Marxist paradise or multicultural university campus in which any human being's desires are satisfied regardless of the quality of those desires or his willingness to work for them.

Smiley sees the world through a left-wing lens--not a Christian one. This is the only way one can explain such idiocy. If leftists continue to succeed in maligning Christians and excusing or exalting Muslims, we can only hope that American pop culture and education will destroy the character of their people as it has done to ours.

Record of Previous Answers Says Sestak and White House Are Coordinating In a Lie

—Ace

Either Joe Sestak was lying then, or he's lying now.

Comparing Sestak's present tale to the first answers he gave to Larry Kane...

Sestak confirms to Kane that the White House offered him a job, or at least he fails to disabuse Kane of that notion in his affirmative answer. And note Sestak assents that he was offered a high-ranking federal job. Each word here is important.

There are more than 60 boards, commissions and committees that at one time or another have advised the president. Most are not considered "high-ranking" administration positions, nor upgrades from a House seat, let alone a seat in the Senate. Besides, though vague on details, both the White House memo and Sestak use the words "Advisory Board," of which there are only two currently active: The Economic Recovery Board and the Intelligence Advisory Board. Sestak is no economist, so the most logical conclusion to draw from the White House memo — that "By virtue of his career in public service, including distinguished military service, Congressman Sestak was viewed to be highly qualified to hold a range of advisory positions. . .while holding his House seat" — is that Sestak was being considered for the Intelligence Advisory Board. The only problem with that option, as the NYT reported, is that Sestak could not have retained his House seat while serving.

In short, it appears that there is no "advisory position" in existence that Sestak would 1) be qualified for and 2) consider preferable to a Senate run and 3) allow him to retain his House seat. Which brings us to the word "job." Sestak uses it himself, not "position" or "role" or "advisory capacity" or anything else. Federal jobs pay (just ask Derb). Jobs bring clout. Jobs open up, in the language of the White House memo, "alternative paths to service" (read: power) that could give a man second thoughts about a Senate run. Could this just be sloppy language from Sestak? Maybe, maybe not.

Umm... I say no.

7 The post LauraW put up this morning (about the Denver Post maintaining radio silence on its own story about a Colorado Senate candidate getting a job offer from the Obama White House as an enticement to drop his primary challenge) is also very important.  It establishes a pattern, and also demonstrates how the White House could have been emboldened by the lack of press follow-up on that story, enough to feel safe about Sestak.

BP Buses In 400 Fake Workers to Serve as Backdrop For Obama's Fake Photo Op

—Ace

Let's all stand on the beach together lookin' like we're large and in charge.

President Obama pauses after burning away
an acre of oil slick with his heat-ray vision.
Perhaps you saw news footage of President Obama in Grand Isle, La., on Friday and thought things didn't look all that bad. Well, there may have been a reason for that: The town was evidently swarmed by an army of temp workers to spruce it up for the president and the national news crews following him.

Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts, whose district encompasses Grand Isle, told Yahoo! News that BP bused in "hundreds" of temporary workers to clean up local beaches. And as soon as the president was en route back to Washington, the workers were clearing out of Grand Isle too, Roberts said.

"The level of cleanup and cooperation we've gotten from BP in the past is in no way consistent to the effort shown on the island today," Roberts said by telephone. "As soon as the president left, they were immediately put back on the buses and sent home."

A pretend army for a pretend president.

And for those of you who doubted Obama's willingness to cut the federal budget: doubt no more.

Three months before the massive BP oil spill erupted in the Gulf of Mexico, the Obama administration proposed downsizing the Coast Guard national coordination center for oil spill responses, prompting its senior officers to warn that the agency's readiness for catastrophic events would be weakened.

That proposal is feeding a mounting debate over whether the federal government is able to regulate deep-sea oil extraction. Defense analysts and retired agency leaders question whether the Coast Guard -- which shares oversight of offshore drilling with the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service -- has the expertise and resources to keep pace with industry advances.

Accidents happen, "but what you're seeing here is the government is not properly set up to deal with this kind of issue," said Robbin Laird, a defense consultant who has worked on Coast Guard issues. "The idea that you would even think about getting rid of catastrophic environmental spill equipment or expertise at the Department of Homeland Security, are you kidding me?"

But Obama has to cut things like this because he's so inflated the size of government spending on what are, frankly, secondary and tertiary responsibilities of the government, if at all.

Thanks to Phil for that last one.

Video Report of Mexican Pirates Chasing American Pro Bass Fisherman In American Waters

We have all read the reports about the Somali pirates taking merchant ships and oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden and now even Thai fishermen in the Indian Ocean to hold for ransom.  Well it would seem that such pirate activity is something that could only happen in lawless places like Somalia.  However, right here in America many citizens of this country are now under assault from pirates who are operating with virtual impunity as they steal cash and electronics from Americans just wanting to fish on Falcon Lake between the American and Mexican border.

All along America's Southern border, we are having to deal with the results of our inability to stem the flow of illegal immigration.  From the ecological disaster created by illegals in the Sonoran desert, to the murder of an American rancher in Arizona, our Southern border is under assault from Mexico. Now there are even reports of how American fishermen are being stalked by pirates on an international Lake created by damming the the waters of the Rio Grande River.

In 1965 when the Falcon State Park opened up the reservoir for fishing there was never a second thought as to whether or not pirating would become an issue on the Lake. Fact is, for the last 45 years, anglers have been coming from all corners of the world to fish for record sized bass in what several Elite Pro Bass fishermen consider "the best bass fishing lake in the world,"  All these years anglers have fishing the waters of Falcon Lake with out trouble.  Unfortunately, America does not have the kind of leadership it did in 1965 when they opened the Park to the public. Lately, the bass are not the only ones dodging danger and fearing for their lives.

Deepwater Oil Spill - Why Top Kill Starts and Stops, Watching the Flows, and a Live Comment Thread

I don’t know that government itself can really do anything about the spill. That is fine with me. Most of us have no background in engineering or science, and Obama is no exception. However, had he been a real leader, he would have bypassed BP and called in all the great minds in the field to come up with a solution. Instead he chose to play politics and point fingers at BP and President Bush.

I heard it said that Obama should have called in Halilburton. I don’t know if the company has the expertise, but if he failed to consider Haliburton solely as a result of its association with Dick Cheney, then Obama was and is a fool. I’m a Republican, but if my house is burning down, I’m not going to stop the firefighters at the door to determine their party affiliation. In a disaster politics is irrelevant.

Charles Krauthammer sums up the whole Gulf spill situation brilliantly.

Here’s my question: Why are we drilling in 5,000 feet of water in the first place?

Many reasons, but this one goes unmentioned: Environmental chic has driven us out there. As production from the shallower Gulf of Mexico wells declines, we go deep (1,000 feet and more) and ultra deep (5,000 feet and more), in part because environmentalists have succeeded in rendering the Pacific and nearly all the Atlantic coast off-limits to oil production. (President Obama’s tentative, selective opening of some Atlantic and offshore Alaska sites is now dead.) And of course, in the safest of all places, on land, we’ve had a 30-year ban on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Ouch. There’s a spin you haven’t heard in the media.

So we go deep, ultra deep – to such a technological frontier that no precedent exists for the April 20 blowout in the Gulf of Mexico.

Exactly. The procedures that were in place for decades, and served us well for all that time never adapted to the new depths. Then when all hell broke loose, they all start looking at each other as if “I thought you brought the beer”.

Not that the environmentalists are the only ones to blame. Not by far. But it is odd that they’ve escaped any mention at all.

The other culprits are pretty obvious. It starts with BP, which seems not only to have had an amazing string of perfect-storm engineering lapses but no contingencies to deal with a catastrophic system failure.

Yup. And Hayward has this “deer in the headlights” look all through this whole thing. What the press mentioned a lot less was all the government deer with the same look.

However, the railing against BP for its performance since the accident is harder to understand. I attribute no virtue to BP, just self-interest. What possible interest can it have to do anything but cap the well as quickly as possible? Every day that oil is spilled means millions more in losses, cleanup and restitution.

Ya think? To listen to the left, you’d think that oil spills are profitable. I fail to see the income stream.

Read the whole thing. It’s pure, unadulterated Krauthammer brilliance.

In the end, speeches will make no difference. If BP can cap the well in time to prevent an absolute calamity in the Gulf, the president will escape politically. If it doesn’t – if the gusher isn’t stopped before the relief wells are completed in August – it will become Obama’s Katrina.

That will be unfair, because Obama is no more responsible for the damage caused by this than Bush was for the damage caused by Katrina. But that’s the nature of American politics and its presidential cult of personality: We expect our presidents to play Superman. Helplessness, however undeniable, is no defense.

Moreover, Obama has never been overly modest about his own powers. Two years ago next week, he declared that history will mark his ascent to the presidency as the moment when “our planet began to heal” and “the rise of the oceans began to slow.”

Well, when you anoint yourself King Canute, you mustn’t be surprised when your subjects expect you to command the tides.

A bazillion updings.

__________

One thing that’s missing from the whole discussion is an understanding of how emergency response is supposed to work. If your house is on fire, and the fire dept comes, they don’t ask you where your extinguishers and hose bibs are, they ask you to stand aside and put it out with their equipment and personnel.

However, if you have an explosives plant, you have a different situation. The way it should work, the fire chief should visit the plant, become familiar with the facility and the procedures, and a protocol is hammered out so that when the unthinkable happens, everyone knows what to do.

That’s what should have happened in this instance. The company filed a drilling plan, the dept of interior, who runs the drilling concession, approves it, and on paper everybody knows what to do. Other government agencies that have an interest in this are the Coast Guard, the EPA, Homeland Security (apparently because FEMA is under their auspicious), and probably some others and the State of Louisiana. I see little evidence that anybody was prepared, and yet Obama was thumping his chest about how the government was going to “take control”. I can imagine a circumstance when this might be appropriate; such as when they agreed in writing to have certain equipment available, and turned out not to.

But as I said, BP wasn’t the only deer in the headlights. This was just plain piss poor emergency planning all around, and while apportioning an appropriate part of the blame to BP, it wasn’t their responsibility to manage the government.

And now we hear from all the usual quarters that the problem was deregulation under Reagan. Complete 100% bull. The regulations were there. The agencies weren’t following them, and they probably weren’t properly updated for deep water drilling.  The people who complain that there aren’t enough regulations, whether it’s in oil drilling of the financial markets never enforce the regulations that are on the books, but always want more.

Why? You decide.

Children Of The Corn

California has an immigration law too

The media, local California governments and liberal groups are absolutely a hoot. Their ignorance is breath taking.

Arizona's new immigration law is said to be racist according to reports in the media from a variety of liberal groups; it's not if you actually read it. Local California cities want to boycott Arizona which is questionable under the Commerce Clause of the US Constitution, but it is also incredible hypocrisy.

For my non-lawyer friends, you probably didn't know that California also has a law pertaining to illegal aliens. Yep. It's been on the books since 1994! Good ole Prop 187. The law provides that law enforcement shall [note -- not "may"] cooperate with US Immigration and Naturalization Service, [now known as ICE], regarding any person suspected of being in the US illegally to include verifying that person's status, advise the person that they must seek legal status to reside in the US, notify the federal government of that person's illegal status and prohibits local governments from not enforcing this law. Most notable is the absence of any reference in the statute to the ability of law enforcement to use race as a basis for inquiry of the person's status! Only an arrest is required to trigger the inquiry into that person's status.

In other words, California's law is racist while Arizona's is not, to use liberal logic, because race may not be used to trigger the inquiry into status in Arizona after an arrest. In California, no problem! Racial profile all you want!
