Dozens of police stations lowered the Union Flag and replaced it with a gay rights banner to mark a day of action against homophobia.
One police chief said the rainbow flag demonstrated his force's support for homosexuals who felt they were victims of prejudice.
But critics warned that it was dangerous for forces to show support for particular campaigns.
Earlier this year, Britain's most senior policeman ordered his force not to fly any flags in support of individual groups.
Sir Paul Stephenson, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, instructed officers to remove a rainbow flag which had replaced a Union Flag at Limehouse police station, in East London, to mark Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender history month.
But elsewhere, four forces flew the gay rights flag at the weekend to mark International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia - the prejudice against transsexuals.

BOSTON (JUNE 1, 2007) Boston Mayor Thomas Menino celebrated the beginning of "Gay Pride Week" by sponsoring an elaborate ceremony, complete with public officials, and having the homosexual "rainbow flag" fly over City Hall for the entire week.
The ceremony was fairly typical for a homosexual event. (1) One of the speeches was about sexually transmitted disease and the importance of being tested. (2) Another speech was about the homosexual movement getting into the public schools. (3) A well-known child molester was named as the official “honorary parade marshall” – the late Gerry Studds.

I’m so tired of the ego gratification of the sexually incompetent. I’m sure some places do fly such flags in the US. I know government offices in D.C. put up posters in support of GLBT month or whatever the hell they call it. They can keep in our faces but someday it will be a bit too far and it won’t be a flag hanging on a poll.
Anyone familiar with Mayor "Mumbles" Menino would know that it's not the cameras he's afraid of but the microphones.
