Genetic analysis of swine flu virus released

Components have existed for years but are combined in a new way

Components of the H1N1 swine flu virus have been circulating undetected for years, but the virus combines the bits and pieces in a way never before seen, a detailed genetic analysis reveals.

The analysis, published online May 22 in Science, pinpoints the origins of each of the virus’s components. It suggests that current influenza vaccines probably won’t provide protection from the virus, but that the virus is susceptible to some antiviral drugs and will be amenable to new vaccine development. A separate study of the virus’s neuraminidase protein (the N in H1N1), published May 20 in Biology Direct, also shows that the virus is sensitive to some drugs but that parts of the protein important for vaccine development and antibody therapies are already changing.

Pigs are the likely origin of the virus, says Nancy Cox, chief of the influenza division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and a coauthor of the Science paper. But it is still unclear whether the virus jumped directly from pigs into humans or infected an intermediate host first.

In the United States, 6,552 probable and confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza, including nine deaths and more than 300 hospitalizations, have been reported to the CDC as of May 22, says Anne Schuchat, CDC’s interim deputy director for the science and public health program. But public health officials estimate that more than 100,000 Americans may have already been infected with the virus.

Overall the number of new cases in the United States is falling, Schuchat says, but the virus is still active in some pockets of the country and is expected to produce more new cases over the summer. “We don’t want people to think we’re out of the woods yet,”...

9 deaths thus far, in a nation whos healthcare is supposedly so screwed up that the leftists, always activly searching for a crisis to exploit, will lie to the public, to pass national health care so we can be more like Mexico.

How many people have died in Mexico?

I’m eating Tylenols like candy, my head spins at the thought that the msm spins that Obama is looking out for us when I know it was the former president ERASING the mistake of Clinton defunding the CDC emergency medicines.

I’m sick. Sick and tired of hearing how Obama is alwawys the day late and dollar short Hawk, what a charlatan, what a truly empty suit.

In my time Iv’e met plenty of merchant marines, and thank God, as our current POTUS was worried about the “global” legal ramifications about shooting pirates - for two days, That the “On scene Commander” did a good thing, and let his crack team do what only that kind of team can do.

So I still ask, what is it that Obama hopes to change?
We have medicine against the spread of the current viral threat, that clinton defunded. And (once again campaign lie) Obama hires Clinton Hacks.

GOD BLESS GWB, I ain’t yer buddy, but at least you were real and true.

I’m eating Tylenols like candy,...

That might not be a good habit, especially if you like to enjoy alcohol. Even if you don't enjoy alcohol, the recommended daily limit for adults is 4,000 milligrams(mg) total to avoid liver toxicity. If someone has liver problems, Tylenol, also known as acetaminophen, can be hazardous to your health.

Here's the Biology Direct link & abstract already mentioned. I never went there before. It reminded me of Physorg.com, i.e. the initial webpage link was not stable, defaulting to an error message, then to an error page. Clicking again on the go arrow, the initial webpage returned. At Physorg.com I have to quickly click on the printer friendly version to avoid that routine. Have any of you had that experience?

Mapping the sequence mutations of the 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus neuraminidase relative to drug and antibody binding sites

In this work, we study the consequences of sequence variations of the "2009 H1N1" (swine or Mexican flu) influenza A virus strain neuraminidase for drug treatment and vaccination. We find that it is phylogenetically more closely related to European H1N1 swine flu and H5N1 avian flu rather than to the H1N1 counterparts in the Americas. Homology-based 3D structure modeling reveals that the novel mutations are preferentially located at the protein surface and do not interfere with the active site. The latter is the binding cavity for 3 currently used neuraminidase inhibitors: oseltamivir (Tamiflu(R)), zanamivir (Relenza(R)) and peramivir; thus, the drugs should remain effective for treatment. However, the antigenic regions of the neuramidase relevant for vaccine development, serological typing and passive antibody treatment can differ from those of previous strains and already vary among patients.

They can say the cases are falling because they stopped testing in many places...all part of the risk management lie to keep the economy churning. We are flu fodder at this point. Get your vitamin D in the cupboard for this fall.

I have some vitamin D in finely divided form that is "dosed" at 2000 IU per drop. I took the bottle to San Diego over the past couple days. When I opened it in Pocatello this afternoon, it was pressurized. A bit more came out of the bottle than intended. The elevation different was 4600 ft.
