Army wants a harder-hitting pistol

The U.S. Army is moving forward to replace the Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol with a more powerful handgun that also meets the needs of the other services.

As the lead agent for small arms, the Army will hold an industry day July 29 to talk to gun makers about the joint, Modular Handgun System or MHS.

The MHS would replace the Army's inventory of more than 200,000 outdated M9 pistols and several thousand M11 9mm pistols with one that has greater accuracy, lethality, reliability and durability, according to Daryl Easlick, a project officer with the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia.

"It's a total system replacement -- new gun, new ammo, new holster, everything," Easlick said.

They could save a bundle by going back to the 1911.

I wish they would choose this. Maybe then I could find ammo again.

The .45ACP was designed after the .38 Colt revolver showed to be worthless against Moslem Juramentados.

The designers could go back and remember that the PUCKLE gun was designed to fired square bullets to use against Moslems.

I love a.45.

I have little hands, and thought a smaller caliber would be better for me.

I tried a Kimber .45 and it was so stable I hit the center EVERY shot.

It made my .38 and 380TCP seem “wobbly”.

Of course, those Wobbly Widdle Guns are easier to CONCEAL.

So I agree with you, FRiend.

Typical GI can’t shoot the 45 cal hardball accurately. The Army should consider going to revolvers.

Whatever caliber you decide to use, wrap it in bacon first. :-)

The M9 doesn't meet it for a multitude of reasons," Easlick said. "It's got reliability issues; the open slide design allows contaminates in.

A prudent person would certainly hope the people responsible for procuring this "MHS" actually knew the difference between "contaminates" and "contaminants."

In the qual for the M9 Glock suffered for not having a factory up and running in the US. They have one now, so they will probably be in the running. Maybe a G22 with a decent trigger...
M&P should also be in the running.
I don’t have any flameproof underwear so I will not comment on whether an accurate 1911 is cost effective, reliable solution.
One way or another, grab your popcorn, this will be fun to watch.

Good idea.

The 10mm was the right cartridge, introduced in the wrong pistol ... then the FBI caved in to the pansies, and we've been saddled with the .40SW ever since. It's not a bad cartridge, but the full length, full power 10mm is better. It would also make a dandy carbine cartridge; IMO more suited to that purpose than the 9mm, .45ACP, or .40SW.
