Now at least average folks can afford to drive to the grocery store to not be able to afford beef.
I read this article earlier. No where in the article does it say why the cost is going up. Corn is cheap, petroleum is cheap.
“I buy only the clearance beef..”
I bought some half price beef yesterday and left a couple packs for you:)
I was in Costco the other day and got fresh lobster claws for $9.90 a pound. The claws were very tasty.
I suppose this is a good thing based on what I’ve learned here about oil. Just think of all of the people in the beef industry that aren’t losing their jobs right now.
The article does not explain the cause. Drought and feed issues have been posited in the past, and maybe the same still holds true. Sure would like to see beef prices go the way of “earl” today.
I think with the recent droughts out West have thinned the cattle herds. Also, with China growing they want to eat more beef.
fried balogna is a good sammich
$2.99 per lb on Tuesday at local Fresh Market
My Engle’s has a large photo poster above the office,
of a Engles circa 1950 with a sign that says,
“Ground Beef, 3lb. for $ 1.37”.
I hate to look at it.
I’ve also noticed that the price of rawhide chews for my dog have been rising.
I get a whole sirloin (10~12 lbs) at $3.80 per pound, then cut off about 6 pounds of grilling steak, the rest is ground up for hamburger.
Over 5 bucks at Publix
Seasonal changes, drought, and price of feed from the drought took their toll.
Then there was last winters cold blasts that froze livestock in the pastures and fields.
In colder weather, livestock need more feed to stay warm and alive.
When farmers were having a problem meeting feed costs , they had to cull their herds.
Now there is a shortage of livestock, and stock breeders, and there may be a shortage for another year before costs level out.
If I want 97% lean ground, it’s $7.23/pound at the local market. Ground chicken and turkey are less, but still around $4.00/pound.
Guess I’ll have to go vegetarian. Yuck!

Or on the grill.
yes. get the uncut log and grill thick slices.
Even considering ammo, tags and processing costs, the venison my family will eat for the next year is less than half that. That includes burger, steaks, roasts and tenderloins, too.
Of course if we add in the beer drank during deer season, the price jumps dramatically :-)
