The University of Cincinnati is reportedly closed down this afternoon as police officers prepare for potential riots over the death of an unarmed man who was killed by university cops during a traffic stop last week.

Samuel Dubose, 43, who is black, was shot and killed by white UC Officer Ray Tensing after Tensing reported that he was “dragged” by Dubose’s vehicle and “had to fire.” The shooting, called “not good” by Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell, was captured on Tensing’s body camera and is set to be released today:

Yes, it looks like the cop over-reacted.
Notice, though, that the gap between that and justified shooting is narrowing as details emerge.

Occurs to me the cop likely ran the plate before interviewing the driver, so he may have been aware of the 60-some arrests (!) the driver had. Easy to over-react when you’re a couple feet from a seriously repeating (with more offenses piling up as the stop & interview progresses) and he makes a furtive movement to escape; doesn’t justify the shooting, but sure explains it.

I’d kill for that.

People have been begging MTM, and whatever company owns them now to release these for sale.
Unfortunately, they have never been able to reach a revenue sharing agreement with all the Bands/Musicians involved. They didn’t mind their music in the show, because it helped promote it, and at the time no one foresaw the future video market.
Even the syndicated re-runs have “generic” music in them.

The show was cutting edge, as well as funny. The episode about the deaths at “The Who” concert was touching, and, by using Herb as a foil, informing to people blaming Rock Music for what happened.

“I’d kill for that.”

This might not be a suitable thread to express such sentiments...

“Alas, they’re throwing gasoline instead of water. Showing the video (objectively interesting, but subjectively incites rage).”

Had no choice. The video would have been released, and soon. Ohio Open Records Law.

Even a more recent TV show - “That 70’s Show” - has generic rock music dubbed in. I binge watched the entire series recently and had the captions on. When a Led Zeppelin was playing - as per lyrics - we were not hearing that but something else.

Bizarre.

I think both the cop and DA would be wise to negotiate a plea bargain.

That’s the problem with video evidence: it brings up as many questions as answers. You can’t see the left hand, and the standard used for self defense is some variation of reasonable fear of death or grave bodily harm. Conviction is guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

“So...what should the cop have done regarding the imminent flight of a criminal suspect?”

Uh... let him go and catch him later, perhaps? They knew he was, etc. It was obviously not a life-threatening situation. No one was “imminently in danger”....

Let him go???

How very liberal of you.

A career criminal with over 60 arrests and you want to let him go.

Am looking at the even better copy of the video on YouTube.
Stopping at the up-close frames of the gin, looks to me like it was NOT sealed. There’s a shiny gap between the plastic top and the plastic collar that holds the top to the bottle until the seal is broken. That “shiny” usually isn’t visible until the seal is broken. An “open container” conviction carries a maximum penalty of a $150 fine.

That the driver had an open bottle of gin at his feet just adds to his escalating list of offenses during the stop and raised the stress level for both, as its easy access and awkward concealment start pointing to drinking _while_ driving. Consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle is a fourth-degree misdemeanor with maximum penalties of 30 days imprisonment or a $250 fine or both.

Better than shooting him.

Liberal my ass.

If it is a choice of letting him go or shooting him dead over a minor traffic stop where no one was endangered, I choose the non-deadly choice every time. Says a lot about you that you have to have this pointed out.

I just think shooting him to death over a traffic stop was a bit uncalled for. Especially when they could let him go, and then pick him up unceremoniously at his house later. Heck, they could have called it in and had someone waiting for him at the house before he got home.

I don’t see anyone actually justifying the shooting, just pointing out that the driver was a repeat offender and his list of offenses was rapidly increasing during the stop, raising mutual stress levels to the point that when he made a furtive movement to escape, the cop had reason & motivation to respond very quickly with force - unfortunately, he used too much force.

I’m not quite sure what the cop was supposed to do, and nobody here has seriously offered a proper alternative.

Finally, #297 suggests an alternative.

Not sure how many cops would let a repeat offender escape in a vehicle for later pick-up, though.

For you to claim he was shot to death over a traffic stop show how naïve and uninformed you are. Or you’re just lying.

Let me guess - you swallowed that whole “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” line of bull too, huh?
