Another thought...how will we ever regain global supremacy against our enemies if we celebrate life’s losers. The Indians lost, the white victors won. That’s just the way it is. Time to get over our ridiculous angst and act like winners again.

How about being an American day, idiots on parade, if they are so proud of thier indiginous beginings go back to that hell hole today.

I think that their point is that they are already where they came from, and that we're the immigrants.

Whatever. If people want to believe they've been victimized then so be it. If they want to wallow in their fantasy view of their past then go ahead. I'm not going to to be a part of their pity-party and as far as I'm concerned Don Henley said it best:

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin' everybody down
You bitch about the present and blame it on the past
I'd like to find your inner child and kick its little ass

Get over it
Get over it
All this bitchin' and moanin' and pitchin' a fit
Get over it, get over it

White liberals should give their houses possessions to tribal councils and then return to Europe from whence they came.

Most so-called “indigenous people” would not give up those things either.

The really poor ‘reservation wonders’ are kept poor by the families that run the particular tribe and are used to gin up more money, money the families use to keep themselves living the life they have become accustom to, after they remodel their current home or build a new one with the latest round of government funds. Added that to their kick backs on drugs, liquor, fireworks and gambling they get quite a haul. Some even have to buy a bank to hold it all, others just stuff the cash into yet another chest of drawers.

No US or Canadian tribe lives in a ‘stone-age culture’ - they are not that dumb. Don’t mistake subsistence living for something out of the stone age as popularly conceived.

The fact is, the indigenous were conquered several times by different people from Europe over a period of several hundred years.

Columbus was a Genoan (not Italian) that convinced the Spanish royalty to back his desire to sail west. He was the first European with the wherewithal using existing technology to create a sustainable effort.

While the original inhabitants are noteworthy, they are trivial in comparison to the inward migration that has been continuous for hundreds of years. The current populations of indians exceeds the
numbers at the time of columbus

I wouldn't figure that they would. I was reflecting on these city council types who have some fantasy about a mythical past when people were pure and living was simple. This must be about one of the only times in human history where some people complain because they have too much.

Any noble, pacifist, tribe would have been exterminated by less noble, more aggressive neighbors. Pre Columbian America was no garden of Eden.

“ If you look at Columbus’ journey here, and the colonization, and the genocide, and the slavery he brought to this hemisphere, we probably weren’t supposed to make it 500 years later, but our traditions, our culture, they are here.”

“Then there is a large population of Italian Americans who for some reason align themselves with this idea of Columbus being an Italian American,” said Matias. “He never made it out of the Caribbean, ...”

Columbus never reached the mainland of North America, but is held responsible for the “genocide” they are claiming. This is an old and discredited slander. There was no genocide of the Indians. The vast majority of them died from diseases contracted by European explorers. In fact it was just as likely that the population of Europe would have been wiped out by diseases brought back from the Americas.

In any case does anyone believe that if Columbus did not discover the Americas that they would never have been discovered? Someone would have found it sooner or later and the reign of the stone age people there would have ended in much the same way that it did. It was inevitable.

What we really need is a Neanderthal Day.

After all, what other race has suffered more? These poor souls were so oppressed by our Homo Sapien ancestors that our genocide against them completely eliminated them from the face of the planet. And yet, to this day we have done nothing to honor them or to repent for our sins.

This is a shame that we all share. White, Black, Asian, Native-American - all modern races of mankind must recognize the stain of guilt that lay upon them by the murderous actions of their ancestors. So please join an effort to replace Columbus Day with Neanderthal Day - particularly if you in or near some great city that has enacted Indigenous People’s Day - as such enlightened people should surely recognize our collective responsibility to honor these long forgotten victims of our heinous crimes against humanity.

And while these noble savages were made extinct by our crimes, it is true that some traces of their existence still remain in the form of various levels of Neanderthal DNA in our genes - which will account for those few who read this, and didn’t realize it was satire, until now.

And those savages would still be pooping in the dirt were it not for those brave men in their tiny wooden ships.

That's a keeper. Into my FReeper Hall of Semi-Fame.

My wife of latino and “indigenous” heritage thinks they are all “F@tards”. Although she used different words, it’s a close translation.

When those indigenous people weren’t fighting amongst themselves they were uniting with either the French or English to fight against whatever tribe was affiliated with the opposition.

Probably was a silly holiday. A tiny island, maybe they could celebrate the landing at Plymouth Rock would be more American.

Let’s all celebrate primitive, blood-thirsty savages who couldn’t even invent the wheel over 10,000 years instead of the brave men who set out to explore the world in tiny wooden ships that were the pinnacle of the day’s technology. Hooray for PC lunacy. Take those nine cities off my list of destinations forever.

Well stated. I agree with your comment completely.
