Don Cresitello is not the kind of guy to say "I hate to say I told you so." In fact he takes great pleasure in doing so. And the Democratic former mayor of Morristown told you long ago that we need better coordination between local and federal authorities when it comes to dealing with potentially violent undocumented immigrants. That was proven against last week when an undocumented Mexican immigrant murdered three people in Missouri after being released from the Middlesex County jail in December to await trial on charges of domestic violence. That incident brought memories of a 2007 incident in which...

RALEIGH -- Federal officials are scaling back a program that enlists the aid of local police and sheriff’s offices to identify people who are in the country illegally, in favor of a national program that uses fingerprints collected by the FBI.U.S. Immigrations Customs and Enforcement officials say the so-called 287(g) program that includes Wake County will continue at least until the end of the year. But ICE says the program is under review, and that it will no longer train local police under the program or give them the authority to question, investigate and arrest people they suspect are in...

On Tuesday, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has denied his request for the Virginia State Police to join the 287(g) program which trains local and state law enforcement to identify illegal aliens in custody for possible deportation. Gov. McDonnell told reporters: "I'm incredibly disappointed with the Obama administration." In August 2010, McDonnell asked DHS to allow 28 state troopers to receive the specified training in order to identify illegal aliens charged with serious crimes such as "major drug offenses or violent offenses such as murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, and kidnapping, as well as...

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer angrily denounced the Obama administration’s decision Monday to strip the state’s police agencies of special immigration arrest powers, saying it was like telling the state to “drop dead” in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision upholding a key provision of Arizona’s immigration law. “I was shocked. I was outraged. I thought, you know, this is politics at its best,” Brewer told Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren in an interview Monday night. “It’s just unconscionable. What they said to Arizona is: ‘Drop dead, Arizona, drop dead, and go away. We’re going to ignore you,’” the Republican...

A coalition of local Hispanic leaders is calling for an independent investigation to determine if racial profiling exists in DuPage County. The group examined Illinois Department of Transportration statistics on traffic stops, which they say show police in some DuPage towns pulled over a higher percentage of minority motorists in 2009 than reflected in the racial makeup of their communities. “What exactly are they looking for?” said Cristóbal Cavazos, a coordinator with Immigrant Solidarity DuPage. “I think us in the Latino community know very well what the police are looking for. They’re targeting Latino drivers in this county.” The countywide...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — An American citizen held as an illegal immigrant in Davidson County — more than once — may have the strongest legal argument yet against the sheriff's role in a federal deportation program. Daniel Renteria-Villegas, a 19-year-old Portland, Ore.-born man, has been detained twice by the Davidson County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant, in spite of having a valid Tennessee driver's license, passport, birth certificate and Social Security number. Now he's challenging the sheriff's very authority to participate in a federal immigration enforcement program called 287(g). He has filed a lawsuit demanding that Sheriff...

The 287(g) program of Federal-State enforcement has been attacked as "racist" and "divisive" by illegal alien advocates, who demand its end. Why? Because it WORKS. One TN county slashed its crime rate and saved $16 million in prison costs in a single year after deporting 8,000 illegals with the 287(g) program. We need MANDATORY 287(g) compliance in every single state. Video LINK Join Stand With Arizona on Facebook

States' Rights: A federal judge hears arguments over whether a state law that mirrors federal law on immigration should take effect next week. Can a state protect its borders when the federal government won't? U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton heard arguments Thursday on Arizona's SB1070. The law says Arizona police, during the enforcement of other laws, can inquire of an individual's immigration status if they have reason to believe that individual is here illegally. The new law is scheduled to take effect on July 29, and the U.S. Justice Department is seeking to block its enforcement largely on the flimsy...

Immigration: The president tells a border state U.S. senator that if we beef up border protection Democrats will lose the bargaining chip for comprehensive immigration reform. Forget national sovereignty — sue Arizona! As the Obama administration prepares to sue the state of Arizona to block its copycat enforcement of federal immigration law, Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl reveals that in a private meeting President Obama put his party's agenda above the nation's sovereignty. Last Friday, Kyl told the audience at a North Tempe Tea Party town hall meeting: "I met with the president in the Oval Office (regarding securing the...

What started as an afternoon on Lake Lanier with friends has led to one man's imminent deportation. Josue Castro, a 25-year-old living in Hall County, is originally from Honduras but is married to a U.S. citizen. On May 25, Castro was arrested for fishing without a license after he could not provide sufficient identification to a Georgia Department of Natural Resources officer. According to Castro's attorney, Arturo Corso, Castro was standing on the shore of Lake Lanier with friends when a GDNR officer approached the group in a boat. Around the same time, Castro walked up to his vehicle. The...

Illegal Immigration: Los Angeles' city council votes to boycott Arizona for its enforcement of existing federal law. No word yet on how China's human rights violations will be treated. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. The next time the Lakers play Los Suns in Phoenix, traveling fans are advised to bring their own snacks. The L.A. City Council voted 13-1 on Wednesday to economically boycott the state of Arizona for daring to protect its borders against the crime, violence and illegal immigration that recently took the life of an Arizona rancher and has made Phoenix the kidnapping capital of...

Montgomery County is opening its doors to illegal immigrants as its neighbors around the Washington region crack down on them. While counties across the area are slamming their doors shut to illegals through federal enforcement, Montgomery County's communication with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials is limited to a weekly fax of names. And now the county is fighting an effort to crack down statewide. The county's Department of Corrections sends the name of every inmate detained on charges of violent crime — without regard to their immigration status — to ICE weekly, according to county spokesman Patrick Lacefield. "If...

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (MyFOX Atlanta) - The word appears to be getting out in Gwinnett County: If you're an illegal immigrant, don't get arrested. Because if you do, you could be shipped out of the United States. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department has fewer inmates in its jail than at any other time in Sheriff Butch Conway's 13 years on the job. He attributed the drop to a decrease in foreign-born inmates in the six weeks that the county has been part of the 287 (g) program, which allows local law enforcement agencies to team with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement...

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department has entered into a 287(g) agreement, making it the fourth law enforcement agency in Georgia to do so. The 287(g) program deputizes local law enforcement agencies to enforce federal immigration laws. Gwinnett is the first Georgia county to enter into such an agreement since a federal Government Accountability Office investigation released in March raised concerns about the program and led the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to make some changes. Gwinnett's entry into the agreement is being cheered by anti-immigration groups and lamented by immigrant rights activists.

It’s an old device in politics: Set up a straw man to criticize when you can’t win an argument on your own. Such tactics, unfortunately, are standard fare when it comes to efforts by a handful of special interest groups to bring about amnesty for illegal immigrants. Organizations such as the National Council of La Raza, the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Migration Policy Institute know that most Americans disagree with their desire for amnesty. Most Americans want to see immigration laws enforced. So these groups create straw...

City Looks To Deport Criminal Illegal Immigrants Via Program After a recent spate of violent crimes allegedly committed by illegal or suspected illegal immigrants, Nashville has asked to become one of five American cities empowered to deport its own criminal illegal immigrants. On Aug. 15, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall—with the full support of Metro Chief of Police Ronal Serpas and District Attorney Torry Johnson—filed paperwork to take part in a little-known federal government initiative called the Delegation of Authority Program or section 287 (g) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act.The 287 (g) program gives local law enforcement agencies the “training...
