Since I cannot start a thread (which I think is a good rule by the way), I have to hijack one -- at least briefly. I do want this thread to continue on, though, because the topic is so important. (Moderators can feel free to move this, of course.)

But I also had something I wanted to say to all of you. You know that I read DU and have for quite some time, long before any of you knew my name. I really appreciate the support you have given me on this latest hurdle and before. It means a lot to me and to John.

Now that I have more time, I will post some, too. But today I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson. This is from the new Bernstein biography of Jefferson. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

I agree with you. But let me make a related point that is not sports oriented but "affirmative action" on radio-- the same station in NYC that carries Rush. Is it any different that Monica Crowley, a blonde conservative, is given a talk show because it is politically correct to have a woman among all those conservative men??? Laura Ingraham has just come on board and she deserves her slot--she is smart and brings humor, insight and a unique perspective to talk radio as a conservative woman. On the other hand, you can't get anyone on air at WABC to admit that Monica is nothing more than a token female who is one big cliche. Pathetic.

Interesting post. I had not seen this article, but then why should that surpirse me. The press doesn't like reporting this type of story. But I give the Washington Times great credit for shining light on the horrible mistreatment of Christians at the hands of Vietnam's government. Too bad it goes unnoticed by most.

    STOLEN VALOR
How the Vietnam Generation Was Robbed of its Heroes and its History

    by B.G. Burkett/Glenna Whitley

In April 1971, the VVAW staged a demonstration it called Dewey Canyon III , a "limited incursion into the country of Congress." ....

    page 135

After a man who said his son died in Vietnam blew taps, the soldiers began flinging their war medals over a high wire fence in front of the Capitol: Purple Hearts, Bronze Star Medals, Silver Stars - bits of ribbon and metal hurled in the face of the government that had so betrayed them. Some, after throwing away what had cost them so dearly, broke down and cried.

One of those was John Kerry , Vietnam Navy veteran and aspiring politician who had been among those who organized the protest. Kerry flung a handful of medals - he had received the Silver Star, a Bronze Star Medal, and three Purple Hearts - over the fence. Kerry spoke later that week before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, putting a face on the antiwar movement far different from the one seen before - the scruffy hippie or wild-eyed activist .Kerry represented the All-American boy, mentally twisted by being asked to do terrible things, then abandoned by his government .

From start to finish, the public took Dewey Canyon III at face value, not understanding that they were watching brilliant political theater. Kerry , a Kennedy protege with white-hot political aspirations , ascended center stage as both a war hero and as an antiwar hero throwing away his combat decorations. His speech, apparently off the cuff, was eloquent, impassioned.

But years later, after his election to the Senate ,Kerry's medals turned up on the wall of his Capitol Hill office. When a reporter noticed them, Kerry admitted that the medals he had thrown that day were not his .[see footnote #209] And Kerry's emotional, from-the-heart speech had been carefully crafted by a speechwriter for Robert Kennedy named Adam Walinsky, who also tutored him on how to present it. TV reporters totally ignored another Vietnam veteran , Melville L. Stephens, a former aide to Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, chief of Naval Operations, who that same day urged the Senate not to abandon America's allies in South Vietnam.

"Peace for us must not come at the cost of their lives,"

Stephens said in a speech he wrote himself. ...

How many of the other participants in Dewey Canyon threw away "props" ? How many were really Vietnam veterans ?

Typical twisted logic. This is no slippery slope. We are at war and it is entirely appropriate for citizens to show their support for our troops, particularly on the public property where they pay taxes and raise sons and daughters who are sent to fight in this war.

Fortunately, I live in a town in CT where yellow ribbons and red-white and blue ribbons adorn every lampost on our Main Street. Did I forget to mention the "Support our Troops" signs which also appear on private and public property alike.

I was outraged to hear about the NJ town that outlawed yellow ribbons on public property and I thought, gee, that would never happen here in CT. Now this!! Please let us know when they find the pipsqueaks who committed this unpatriotic act. And when they are caught, I hope they pay a high price.

Of course you are right. Too fast on the keyboard. But the salient point is that John Allen Muhommad (John Williams) was a suspect when a grenade exploded in an Army tent in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking of the DC sniper--I bet many will recall that John Malvo aka John Williams, was a suspect in a grenade attack on an Army tent during his "military service" in Saudi Arabia.

Think anyone in the media will connect the.......s?

His credibility is at an all time low. The little boy who cried wolf comes to mind. Bush can not possibly think that one man's political future (either his own or Tony Blairs) is worth more than the safety of our military. This waiting game is not good for them and has allowed SH to prepare for war for months. I was truly hopeing that President Bush would make the hard decisions, do the right thing and not worry about being a one term president when so much is at stake in the world.

Whatever it is called, the rally needs to be coordinated across the country. There is a post from FT Lauderdale wanting to stage a pro America rally which will counter the so-called peace rally of 2/15. If we could pick a date--March 1 or any other and have a call to congregate in towns all over America, a real statement could be made and sent to the world, as well as Saddam and the UN.

A talk show host on WABC in NYC tonight was interviewing another talk show host in the Dallas area where a Pro America march is going to be held. Thousands of people were calling in to his show after he proposed the idea. And get this--his son signed up for the Marines three days ago. I think this is a very good idea if framed as a Pro America march. I have a problem calling it a Pro Bush march even though I understand that others see the anti war protests as anti Bush. The issue should be framed as those who support our country and its leadership. Bush isn't making this easy in the way he is going about it. He has allowed the left to mobilize due to his procrastination and his concern over political matters. While I support the decision to go after Saddam, I don't like Bush's political posturing to appease the left. They will never accept him or any of his actions. He should think like a one-term president and make his decisions based on knowledge and principal and let the chips fall where they may come November 2004. I would rather leave office knowing I followed my conscience, rather than following a Karl Rove.

I too have been very curious about these so-called "medical students." Ross University's school of medicine is in Dominica, West Indies. It is one of the "Carribean" schools of medicine. The school has only graduated 3,565 physicians and is not accredited in the US. If you live near a hospital on the list below, I'd be careful. You should also browse the main website for the school where you will see the Residency Positions announced for the July, 2002 year. Note that there actually is a section "Names withheld by request." This is a rather bizzare thing since in the United States every spring the "match" takes place and residents find out which hospital they will be working at. The names of these residents are printed in USA TODAY. It is public information and usually those students are quite happy to see their name affiliated with a hospital after years of hard work. Now what medical student would want their "Names withheld by request???"
