Full title: Bob Hope was determined to entertain American troops and give back to the country he loved, says daughter From vaudeville to Hollywood, Bob Hope conquered it all as a beloved showman — but his greatest achievement was entertaining the troops. At the time of his death in 2003 at age 100, the New York Times reported the film, TV and stage star performed nearly all of his 400 radio programs at military bases and embarked on annual tours where he delighted American servicemen with his sidesplitting monologues. Hope even took time to befriend weary soldiers and, as his...

A woman has been jailed after duping film-makers into believing she could get them behind-the-scenes access to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Ann Leuser fraudulently claimed to have a close connection with the former US secretary of state and tried to enter into a contract for a fly-on-the-wall documentary that proposed a series of payments totalling £120,000. The 56-year-old, of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, even paid an actress £5,000 to impersonate Clinton’s director of communications Jennifer Palmieri over the phone.

“No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now.” Richard Nixon’s 1994 post-war observation remains as prescient as ever. With the release of the Ken Burns/Lynne Novick epic 10-part PBS documentary on the war last month, it is safe to say that the misreporting and misremembering have only been compounded and exacerbated. For those among us who expected favorable treatment for the American effort to halt the spread of communism and a serious look at our South Vietnamese allies beyond the recycled shibboleths of their leaders as corrupt...

Charles Mutua Mulli, one of the most interesting and inspirational people you’ve probably never heard of, woke up in his family’s hut in a tiny village in Kenya one morning in 1955 and discovered that his parents had taken his brother and fled. Charles had been abandoned. He was 6 years old. The tale of that child’s experiences over the ensuing 60 years is told in a compelling new documentary titled “Mully” (he later changed the spelling of his surname), directed by the actor/filmmaker Scott Haze. It is a rags-to-riches story of extraordinary dimensions – i.e., Mully literally went from...

Steve Sherman and VVFFH are reviewing each episode, pointing out the falsehoods, misrepresentations, outright lies and propaganda as they come up. Here is a summary of the first episode: Segment One: (1945-1959) Fails to mention that Ho Chi Minh was a Comintern (Soviet) agent for nearly 20 years, not a nationalist as portrayed in the documentary. If he was a true nationalist, he would have worked with the other anti-French nationalists (VNQDD, Dai Viet, Catholic, Cao Dai, etc.) instead of betraying them to the French Surete to be imprisoned or killed. He also murdered many anti-French nationalists and Vietnamese patriots...

Most of the interviewees talk in the lugubrious tones of the defeated. We all know the story ends badly. But when it’s over, we aren’t told why we lost. The music is more memorable than the pictures, and the pictures are more compelling than the narration. We are deluged by sights and sounds but not enlightened as to cause and effect. The film casts the antiwar movement in a moderately favorable light. Are the protesters the real heroes here? What about the valiant US soldiers, 75 percent of whom were volunteers?

Thirteen years after Morgan Spurlock’s hit documentary Super Size Me put the fast-food industry on blast and the filmmaker on the map as one of the modern era’s best-known documentarians, Spurlock is back with a sequel. Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! will have its world premiere on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival (screening details for those in Toronto for the fest can be found here). Whereas in the original film, the Oscar-nominated Spurlock attempted to eat only McDonald’s food products for a 30-day period, Super Size Me 2 finds the filmmaker opening up his own fast-food establishment,...

A new Netflix documentary shows the incredible story about how an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" was used to stop a man from being put to death for a crime he didn’t commit. "Long Shot" tells the story of Juan Catalan, arrested for the murder of a 16-year-old girl in 2003. NME reports that he had long maintained his innocence by saying he was at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game on the night of the crime. Catalan mentioned that it looked like somebody was filming something at the game, but he wasn’t sure what. The filming was for the...

Since I hate the propaganda on Netflix these days, I searched around for entertainment and found this three-part documentary (the first part is linked). It is mostly about the workers' plight and the corruption of crony capitalism, but it has been far more balanced than the Wobbly-level drivel I expected it to be (especially about the Reconstruction period and slavery); it's quite informative and visually captivating. If someone decides to watch it, I would appreciate if some Freepers decided to express their opinions and set facts straight if need be.

To believe, in the 1980s, that Ronald Reagan was going to blow up the world may have been merely peculiar. To believe so today is a symptom of raging Reagan Derangement Syndrome. And yet here we are, with The Reagan Show, a new documentary rehashing the paranoid style of Reaganography, set for limited theatrical release on June 30 and video-on-demand release shortly thereafter. The continuing popularity of President Reagan is a source of profound irritation and unease to liberals. To assuage their pain, they have gone back to their initial rationalization for how Reagan became so beloved: He cheated. Though...
