What makes this electric aircraft irresistible is that it literally makes flying accessible to most. It doesn't require a pilot's license in the US, and it's designed to be extremely easy to fly. It's also a one-seater, which makes it a rarity among eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing) and flying cars. As Patan describes it, piloting the Jetson One feels almost like driving a car but doing it up in the sky.

IAN ALLEN It’s not a “flying car.” Zero emphasis on the “car” better serves the “flying.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A perennial punchline in the automotive world, the flying car holds the imagination of at least a few dreamers to this day—despite the fact that it is no less a dumb idea now than decades ago. This story originally appeared in Volume 21 of Road & Track. The obsession with flying cars dates to at least 1917. That year, Glenn Hammond Curtiss, a bicycle racer turned motorcycle builder, created the Curtiss Autoplane, widely considered the first attempt at a “roadable aircraft,” or flying...

A California company building a flying electric car is now taking preorders. Alef Aeronautics’ flying car has been given a Special Airworthiness Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), meaning the company will be allowed to road/air test the car, the company said in a news release. The fully-electric vehicle (with a hydrogen option for a higher price) is a low-speed vehicle that can be driven up to 200 miles on public roads and fits into a regular garage, but it can also launch vertically into the air with a flying range of 110 miles, according to Alef’s website. The...

A Silicon Valley flying car startup that received backing from Google's Larry Page and set out to revolutionize the way people get around is closing locations and laying off employees. Kittyhawk gave pink slips to 100 employees, according to a WARN notice filed with state labor officials on Sept. 22. The WARN notice posted with California's Employment Development Department also indicated that the company is permanently closing three offices, including two in Palo Alto at 821 San Antonio Rd. and 4062 Fabian Way and another in Mountain View at 2639 Terminal Blvd. The layoffs and closures were reported to the...

A hybrid car-airplane known as “AirCar” has been issued a certificate of airworthiness by the Slovakian civil aviation authority, potentially paving the way for the future of flying vehicles. The dual-mode car-aircraft vehicle, which looks like a sports car, was created by a team of eight highly-skilled specialists at the Slovakian company Klein Vision, which was founded by Professor Stefan Klein. Klein has devoted the last 20 years to making the flying car a reality. It was awarded the certificate by the Slovak Transport Authority after successfully completing 70 hours of “rigorous flight testing compatible with European Aviation Safety Agency...

Investors in China expressed their interest in the flying car designed by Slovak Štefan Klein. The prototype of the flying car, which could be mass-produced within three years, is only one of two Slovak representatives at this year’s China International Import Expo (CIIE), which began on November 5 in the Chinese city of Shanghai. The second is the Neodual company, the TASR newswire reported. Rolls-Royce has released plans for a flying taxi that could be taking to the skies in the early 2020s. The British manufacturer will unveil its designs for an electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) vehicle at the Farnborough Airshow, which will be officially opened by Prime Minister Theresa May tomorrow. The air show is one of the biggest events in the aviation calendar, and May is expected to use the occasion to announce a slew of new initiatives to boost employment and growth in the UK’s aerospace industry, and to protect the supply chains that companies such as Bombardier, Rolls-Royce...

It's as easy to use as playing Minecraft," Kitty Hawk CEO Sebastian Thrun said as we watched my colleague Rachel Crane pull on a motorcycle helmet. Rachel and I had just flown into Las Vegas for an exclusive first look at the Silicon Valley single-seat flying machine, Flyer. Kitty Hawk, funded by Google cofounder Larry Page and led by Thrun, a self-driving car pioneer, attracted nationwide attention when it teased its Flyer prototype last year. But now Rachel was suiting up to become the first reporter to take flight in a new, sleeker model -- no pilot license required. Expectedly,...

Imagine an aircraft that will take off and land like a helicopter but fly as fast and high as some light private jets. If all goes according to plan, a prototype of such an aircraft will fly in the fall and could be in customer hands by 2023. The six-seat, $6.5 million TriFan 600 being built by XTI Aircraft in Denver holds the promise of dramatically cutting travel times between major city centers and offering the ultimate in private, secure transport. “It affords you utmost privacy as it eliminates the need for an airport,” said XTI CEO Robert LaBelle. A convoy of self-driving trucks recently drove across Europe and arrived at the Port of Rotterdam. No technology will automate away more jobs — or drive more economic efficiency — than the driverless truck. Shipping a full truckload from L.A. to New York costs around $4,500 today, with labor representing 75 percent of that cost. But those labor savings aren’t the only gains to be had from the adoption of driverless trucks. Where drivers are restricted by law from driving more than 11 hours per day without taking an 8-hour break, a driverless truck can drive nearly 24 hours per...

It has been rumored off and on over the years that various big automakers are secretly at work on a flying car, and this week patent drawings emerged that show some ideas from Toyota’s drawing board. The patent application, which is dated Sept. 3, shows drawings of a car with four “stackable wings.” The wings, which will be short enough that they don’t protrude from the sides of the roof, can be deployed in various configurations for different phases of flight, from takeoff to cruise. The car also would have three rotors — two horizontal and one vertical.

The idea of a flying car might seem like something out of a science fiction novel, but it may soon become a reality. All it'll take is about $30 million in funding and some patience. Terrafugia, a Woburn manufacturer of flying cars has been working on its vehicles for almost eight years. The MIT-born company has been working on two kinds of cars: the Transition, which is scheduled to be released in mid-2016 and can fly at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour at up to 10,000 feet in the air; and the TF-X, a semi-autonomous plug-in hybrid...

Police have arrested the man they believe was driving a car that went airborne and landed on a Forest Acres roof early Saturday morning. A Columbia Police Department spokesperson says officers took 21-year-old Antwon Ashley into custody overnight. He's been charged with reckless driving, driving under suspension, hit and run with property damage, failure to stop for blue lights, littering and trafficking crack cocaine. Police say Ashley is a gang member.
