Patrick Gavin at Politico captured revelations from a Thursday interview Chris Matthews granted at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in DC. On his show: "Obviously, I think I'm the best. But each one of the other people think they're the best, too....I think I'm the best, generally....There's no doubt about it, in fact, but other people have different views....'Hardball' is absolutely nonpartisan." How then, does Matthews explain his Thrill Up My Leg reputation? Is he a journalist? He says yes: "Absolutely. I have to deal with facts every night. I have to cover the news every night."

Dem says it’s wrong to celebrate Christmas if unemployment benefits not extended. On Thursday’s magnificent installment of "Hardball" on MSNBC (which is barely watched by anyone…except the hardest of hardcore libs), Congressman Jim McDermott was on with Chris Matthews, making the case about unemployment benefits extension, when he brought Christianity into the mix. According to McDermott, it’s "simply wrong" to celebrate Christmas and some of its themes like caring about the poor…if Americans do not support extending unemployment benefits. Tuesday night on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” host Chris Matthews described the recent uproar over the TSA as “the right wing’s ginned up controversy.” This, of course, is a narrative liberals are hoping to push. During his discussion with The Washington Examiner’s Tim Carney, Matthews went on to imply that conservatives are only outraged over the TSA’s procedures because they want to hurt President Obama politically.

Occasionally, political pundits get so wrapped up in their analysis that they don’t think through all of the implications of their commentary. That happened to Mark Penn, longtime Democratic pollster, in his appearance on Hardball last night, in the most charitable explanation possible. Eyeblast’s Joe Schoffstall clips this magic moment from the discussion with Chris Matthews on how disconnected Barack Obama has become from the American electorate, and what it will take for him to reconnect, using Bill Clinton as an example:

Democrat pollster Mark Penn appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball and said that President Clinton reconnected with his speech after the Oklahoma City bombings, and Obama needs a similar situation to do the same. “President Clinton reconnected with Oklahoma. And the President right now he seems removed. And it wasn’t until that speech that he really clicked with the American people. Obama needs a similar kind of, yeah” said Penn.

President Obama may be sinking in the polls, looking at big midterm losses in both the House and Senate, and “fiddling while Rome burns” but he hasn’t lost his thrilling touch where Chris Matthews is concerned. On Hardball tonight, following a clip of Obama speaking at a campaign stop in 2008 about his working class upbringing and hope, Matthews had this to say: “You know, I get the same thrill up my leg, all over me, every time I hear those words. I’m sorry, ladies and gentlemen, that’s me.”

When Sestak later appeared, he demonstrated just why Dems are so worried.
