    The Local ^ | 13 Jul 2014
Germany has honoured a Bangladesh farmer and diehard fan for making a 3.5-kilometre-long (2.2 mile) flag of the country in support of Philipp Lahm's World Cup team, officials said on Sunday. The massive flag was on display Saturday at a stadium in the western town of Magura, which the German charge d'affaires, Ferdinand von Weyhe, visited to pay tribute to the farmer. "The 3.5-kilometre-long German flag circled the stadium four times and hundreds of people have turned up to see this amazing sight," said Ishrat Hossain, a German embassy spokeswoman. She said Von Weyhe handed the farmer, 65-year-old Amjad Hossain,...

The bullring Iowa short oval is the perfect track for Target Chip Ganassi Racing to get its season in order, and after a day filled with rain delays, defending Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon led an all-Target front row for Saturday night's 300-lap race. The Kiwi's record-breaking 186.256mph average was set after his No. 9 Dallara-Chevrolet engineers used information from earlier qualifying runs made by Ganassi teammates to make a few quick tweaks before heading out, and it made all the difference. Tony Kanaan will start second in the sister car (185.891). "We missed a bit on balance in...
  • Down but Not Out: The Uncertain Future of the Crossword Puzzle

    The Atlantic ^ | JUL 11 2014 | Tanya Basujul
The future of puzzling is as fluid as the English language itself. While the world warns of an impending print collapse, it might take down an innocent bystander with it—those little black and white squares that have long inhabited the back pages of newspapers and made themselves the primary Sunday-afternoon obsession of crossword nerds, for whom completing a puzzle is a bragworthy accomplishment. Yes, the meager crossword, its unnerving simplicity belying a capability to wrench you mad with clues that speak of everything and nothing at once, is moving toward becoming a relic of the past. Binghamton University English professor Michael...

Welcome to the future of target shooting. As aerial drones become more commonplace in our skies, one inevitable thought arises: people will try to shoot them down. Some people consider drones to be pesky and intrusive devices. Other people see them as an exciting and challenging target. The latter group have given rise to a thrilling new sport target: gnat drones.Gnats are scaled-down, military-style R/C drones designed for target shooters. These highly maneuverable drones are loaded with explosive charges under each wing. But if you think you can shoot one down, good luck. These drones are nearly indestructible, and they can zip and roll through the sky at...

SAN DIEGO - The family that drew national attention when they were rescued at sea off their sailboat, Rebel Heart, in April is finally setting the record straight. Charlotte and Eric Kaufman and their two daughters were about 1,000 miles west of Cabo San Lucas in the Sea of Cortez when 1-year old Lyra became sick. That was when their adventure of a lifetime turned into a nightmare. It began with a fever, then a rash and then Lyra became lethargic. That was when the couple used their satellite cell phone to call a doctor. He advised them to begin...

I tried plinking with my new Marlin 795 .22 semi auto about three months ago. Almost every round jammed, I even had to use a clothes hanger to punch some stuck rounds out of the chamber. Tried again yesterday after a thorough cleaning. Same thing. Thought, "Oh well, send it off to Marlin for repairs". By chance, I ran a few rounds of the same .22 long through a Puma revolver. Oddly enough, a bunch of the rounds didn't fit in the cylinder.. Now I get it.. I was using Aguila ammo, made in Mexico, bought for real cheap at...

An 18-month-old Saudi boy who was playing in the back garden of his house in the Gulf kingdom went back in carrying a snake which he wanted to show to his mother. The boy looked delighted by what he thought a toy he had found before his mother hit him on the hand, sending the snake crawling away. “The mother chased the snake with a stick and killed it. She said her son thought it was a toy and he was very happy with it,” Sabq Arabic language daily said in a report from the southern Dhamad town.
  • Ruger 77/44 44 Mag bolt action carbine

I just picked up a new Ruger 77/44 bolt action and wondered if anyone here has any experience with them, or favorite loads/reloads for them? It is a SS 44 Mag bolt action carbine with an 18 1/2 inch barrel and Synthetic stock. Michigan just passed a law that will allow pistol cartridge rifles to be used for deer hunting in the 'shotgun zone', so I plan to use it for hunting deer. I'm thinking 240 grain semi-jacketed softpoints should do the job out to 125 yds or so.

Hi, Friends, and Happy Independence Day despite these trying times. I'm wondering if there's a thread or ping list for things Indycar-related. If not, is there interest? I don't know how to set up a Ping list, though it can't be that difficult, and if there are others who'd like to keep apprised about things Indycar, as well as to cheer along our favourites drivers and teams, I'm willing to spearhead it, with Admins' blessing of course. We just saw an incredible weekend of racing at Houston's double header and we have another big 500 miler this weekend. It's been...
  • Men Would Rather Give Themselves Electric Shocks Than Sit Alone With Their Thoughts

Most people don’t think it’s fun to sit alone with nothing to do but think — it’s part of the reason for obsessive phone-checking during idle moments. A new study in Science highlights just how unenjoyable this experience is: in short, very. To the point that some people will choose to shock themselves rather than sit alone with nothing to do for a little while. The researchers conducted 11 experiments in a variety of settings and among a variety of age groups. In most of them, subjects were asked to simply chill out and think for 6 to 15 minutes...

Some of you know that I've been having re-occurring Internet connection troubles since the end of Feb. At first I was told it was the computer (which couldn't even be successfully repaired) so I got another (rebuilt) computer and for fifty days I was set to go. Then suddenly on 5/20 the problem started occurring again. I took the computer back to the shop at which I'd purchased it to have it tested and apparently there was no problem whatsoever with it, so I was told it must have been my connection. Then began a very long and painful experience...
