A man in Sri Lanka broke two world records this month when he had a massive kidney stone removed from his body, according to Guinness World Records. Sixty-two year old Canistus Coonghe, a retired soldier, had not only the largest kidney stone but also the heaviest. It was removed June 1 by a team of urologists. The 1.76 pound kidney stone – roughly the same weight as five baseballs – is the largest kidney stone ever recorded. Guinness stated on their website that the kidney stone is larger than Coonghe's actual kidney. Lengthwise, the stone reportedly measured 5.26 inches by...

Early Friday morning my wife was in severe pain on her left side. Went to the walk-in clinic and they said she needed to go to the Emergency Room. We did. As soon as the Doc seen her he said, he believed the cause is a kidney stone. Took X-Ray and sure nuff it was 1 stone about 2mm in size. They gave her an IV, a pain shot, and a few other shots. We were there for about 3.5 hours. When discharged they gave her a script for 4 prescriptions. The Doc told her the stone was about to...

Life will be great again when I pass this damn thing. Right now, it's giving me a break. Started this past late Friday morning while driving. Ever since then, it's been off and on pain on a level of 7 out of 10. Early this morning was an ordeal as the pain started just after midnight and lasted until about 3:30am. I had to take the day off work. Been drinking boatloads of water since Friday. Someone said drink fresh lemonade or lemon juice. Thoughts? BTW, this is my 3rd bout with these things so not my first rodeo. First...

If it looked like a Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate was in pain during a debate about the issues which affect the state’s LGBTQ community on Tuesday, it wasn’t because he was uncomfortable with the subject matter. It was because Massachusetts Treasurer Steven Grossman was passing a kidney stone during the debate. Grossman’s situation was so noticeable that it instantly inspired a parody Twitter account, @GrossmansStone. According to the account’s bio: “Consensus builder. Pragmatic progressive. Mostly mineral.” @msherryflax Spent a lot of time pondering that waiting for my chance to escape Steve's renal area. Congress needs more water. #mapoli — Grossman's Stone...

Vitamin supplements are popular items these days. Vitamin C is particularly popular in the winter, when people pop tablets at the first sign of a cold. However, data indicates that vitamin C doesn't actually prevent colds, but long-term use may slightly reduce the severity or duration of a cold when you do catch one. So, should we all start popping vitamin C tablets every day? Probably not. A new study in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that men who took 1,000-mg tablets of vitamin C were twice as likely to develop kidney stones as men who did not take vitamin C...

(July 15, 2008) — Global warming is likely to increase the proportion of the population affected by kidney stones by expanding the higher-risk region known as the "kidney-stone belt" into neighboring states, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center and UT Dallas have found. Dehydration is one of the risk factors linked to kidney-stone disease, and the paper suggests global warming will exacerbate this effect. The researchers predict that by 2050, higher temperatures will cause an additional 1.6 million to 2.2 million kidney-stone cases, representing up to a 30 percent growth in some areas.
