Researchers from Spain were among the 2017 recipients of the Ig Nobel peace prize for discovering that babies sing and dance in the womb when sound is piped in through “a musical tampon”Awarded on Thursday night at Harvard University in the US, the Ig Nobel is a light-hearted alternative to the famous Nobel prize that recognizes “achievements that first make people laugh, then make them think”, according to the prize’s website. Marisa López-Teijón, Álex García-Faura, Alberto Prats-Galino, and Luis Pallarés Aniorte, from the Institut Marqués jointly won this year’s Obstetrics prize for showing that a developing human fetus responds more...

When Congress hauls in Equifax CEO Richard Smith to grill him, it can start by asking why he put someone with degrees in music in charge of the company’s data security. And then they might also ask him if anyone at the company has been involved in efforts to cover up Susan Mauldin’s lack of educational qualifications since the data breach became public. It would be fascinating to hear Smith try to explain both of those extraordinary items. If those events don’t put the final nails in his professional coffin, accountability in the U.S. is officially dead. Equifax “Chief Security...

A gaggle of disgruntled atheists are doing a whole lot of hollering about the Hallelujah Chorus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s local chapter is angry after a teacher at Linden Elementary School played a portion of the “Hallelujah Chorus” during morning announcements. “While this music may be beautiful and even inspirational for Christians, it is not acceptable for broadcasting to the entire student body at Linden Elementary,” Aleta Ledendecker wrote in a letter to the school district that was obtained by the Oak Ridger. The aggrieved atheist group said they were acting on behalf of two...

“No Trump! No KKK! No Fascist USA!” When Green Day chanted the repurposed lyrics from Texan punk trailblazers MDC’s 1981 song Born to Die during the 2016 American Music Awards, it gave the burgeoning anti-Trump, anti-fascist movement the slogan it needed – and it would soon appear on placards, T-shirts and be chanted by protesters in their thousands in months to come. It was a tiny piece of punk history writ large on American cultural life – but it only gave the merest hint of US hardcore punk’s influence on the current political landscape.

Usually when I write songs, I use whatever recent turmoil there has been in my life as the source of inspiration. I’m the first to admit I have no talent for happy or uplifting songs, but I can turn out tunes to darker things with little problem. Luckily, or unluckily perhaps, life seems to throw more than enough rubbish in my direction for me to be rather prolific in these dark arts. So, it was quite a surprise to find, when it came time to start work on my new album Savage, that I had no turmoil to call upon....

Taylor Swift has remained notoriously tight-lipped on her political leanings, but her friend and back-up dancer Todrick Hall says that anyone who takes her silence as evidence she voted for Donald Trump are making a "huge assumption." Swift faced criticism throughout the election season for remaining mum, and not following in the footsteps of her fellow pop stars, who expressed their support for Hillary Clinton and disdain for Trump. Her sole foray into the world of politics was as an apolitical Instagram post on Election Day telling her followers to "go out and VOTE." But according to Hall, who has...

Toni Basil, the one-hit wonder behind “Mickey,” filed suit in L.A. Superior Court on Thursday alleging that the song has been used without her permission for decades. According to the suit, Basil recently became aware that the song was used in an episode of “South Park,” in a Forever 21 ad, and on an episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” She was particularly offended that the Forever 21 campaign was in support of a line of Disney products, associating her song with Mickey Mouse. “Basil was never consulted and would never consent to the use of her voice, persona, image, or...

As I've said in the past I don't watch any national news and after this Charlottesville thing I had to stop listing to CNN, Fox and MSNBC on Sirius radio while in the car. Back in the 80s I built a library of 3,600 songs which I now listen too while driving. They all fit on a jump drive. Don't have everything memorized but as soon as the next song starts I say YES!!!! As it was when the Kingston Trio started a few of days ago. And especially when a clip came up from the Hungry i album. They...

Although it is only August, my choir is planning our music for the Mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12). It is a bilingual Spanish/English service. We have an abundance of songs available in Spanish, of course. However, we need two or three songs in English. For the past two years, we have used "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman" and "Holy is His Name," but we're tired of those! Does anyone know of any songs in English about Our Lady of Guadalupe, or even fairly close thematically? I looked last year, but all I found was something for children using...
