Obama had led by 6-8 pts in our polling before the first debate -Romney has a 52/45 advantage over Obama in New Hampshire on the economy -NH voters think Obama won debate by 8 pts, still support Romney by 1. Democrats need to accept debate this week was not a big game changer -Romney leads Obama 49-48 in Iowa as well, although Obama does have a 66/32 early vote lead there -Iowa voters think Obama won this week's debate 45/36, similar to New Hampshire, but not having a big impact on...

The race to be New Hampshire’s next governor remains tight. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely New Hampshire voters finds Republican Ovide Lamontagne with 48% of the vote to Democrat Maggie Hassan’s 46%. Five percent (5%) are undecided at this point. (To see survey question wording, click here.) The numbers were reversed last week when Hassan held 48% of the vote to Lamontagne’s 46%, highlighting the closeness of the race. In late September, Lamontagne had a 48% to 44% advantage over Hassan.
“You’ve heard of the New Deal, the square deal, the fair deal. Mitt Romney’s trying to sell you a sketchy deal. You don’t need a sketchy deal,” Obama said. “The last time this sketchy deal was tried was when the previous administration made the same sales pitch.”

For Obama and Romney, Small New Hampshire Could Have A Big Impact By Dan Balz October 18 MANCHESTER, N.H. — New Hampshire is the smallest of the battleground states, with just four electoral votes, and for much of the fall it has seemed an afterthought to the candidates as they’ve campaigned across more prominent contested states. That changed Thursday with the arrival of President Obama at a downtown rally on a brilliant fall day. His appearance, and the later kickoff of a 24-hour campaign swing through the state by his surrogates, underscored the state’s potential significance in the competition for...

EXETER — Some came for the politics, some came for the skating and others came just to see what the commotion was about. Olympic gold medalist figure skater Scott Hamilton spoke at the Rinks at Exeter on Wednesday afternoon as his last stop on a New Hampshire tour endorsing Mitt Romney for president. "It's difficult because as a figure skater you want everybody to like you, and when you stand up here only half of (the) people like you," said Hamilton, "but I feel very strongly about this."

Long Island was the electoral map has narrowed and Obama’s team, while conceding nothing publicly, is circling the wagons around Ohio, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. Plouffe said that Obama remains strong in all four states, but he would not discuss the specifics of internal polling or voter-contact analytics, saying only that Obama has “significant leads” in all four places. It is uncharacteristic of Team Obama to concede any terrain, but Plouffe offered no such assurances about Obama’s position in North Carolina, Virginia, or Florida. Romney advisers have seen big gains in all three states and now consider wins likely,...

CONCORD – A new, independent poll has President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney tied in New Hampshire, each with 47 percent support, as the two candidates prepare for their second of three debates Tuesday night. The Oct. 12-15 poll of 500 likely voters from Suffolk University was carried out after Romney’s strong performance in the first debate. Pollster David Paleologos said a troubling sign for the President is his job approval rating remains at 47 percent three weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

Likely voters in the Granite State are split 47% to 47%, according to a Suffolk University/7News survey. Two percent of voters support Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson, while 4% are undecided. -snip- With the race so close, New Hampshire is one state where support for Johnson, the Libertarian candidate, could prove decisive in the final results. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, said Obama will likely benefit more than Romney from Johnson voters....

New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) conducted a gubernatorial debate on 19 September 2012. One of the questions had to do with the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), an effort to limit greenhouse gases by auctioning CO2 allowances (sounds like cap and trade to me). Republican Ovide Lamontagne favors repeal of RGGI, while Democrat Maggie Hassan favors keeping it. Watch and listen to their answers at about 32 minutes into the debate. They are in a lightning round, with a ten-second limit to answers. Ms. Hassan's answer, from the previously linked video, follows: ***** "I was proud to be a sponsor...

The latest WMUR Granite State poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, shows President Barack Obama leading Romney among likely voters, 47 percent to 41 percent. Obama held a 15-point lead in last week's Granite State poll, which was conducted Sept. 27-30. The latest poll was conducted Sept. 30-Oct. 6, with 57 percent of the responses coming before the Oct. 3 presidential debate in Denver. As has been the case with other post-debate polling shifts, Obama has seen...

OHIOReference to coal helps Romney pull even in Buckeye StateMitt Romney’s performance in the first presidential debate has gotten him back into the race in Ohio, in part because he raised an issue that resonates here.“By the way, I like coal. I’m going to make sure we can continue to burn clean coal,” he said during the debate. “People in the coal industry feel like it’s getting crushed by your policies.”According to the Ohio Coal Association, almost half of the state’s 26 coal plants are due to close by 2015, thanks to Environmental Protection Agency regulations.Since the debate, Romney has...

Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, a co-chairman of Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, on Tuesday dismissed a new poll showing President Obama up by 15 points in the Granite State as "a piece of garbage" and predicted Mr. Romney ultimately would win the state by 2 to 3 points. "Let me just test your political wisdom," Mr. Sununu said to host Chuck Todd on MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown." "Do you think it's possible for that to be right? No, you know it's a piece of garbage." "I believe it's head-to-head in New Hampshire," Mr. Sununu continue, "and I've seen enough...

The adapted excerpts look at the impact of talk radio on election results.) Before what would turn out to be an historic election, a New York Times article said, “If Larry King’s CNN program functioned as a nominating process for Ross Perot; Rush Limbaugh may be a kind of national precinct captain for the Republican insurgency of 1994.” An election night poll by Fabrizio-McLaughlin of 1,000...

On our podcast today, Brian Ward, Steve Hayward and I talked about the obviously bogus polls that purport to show Barack Obama with a big lead in various swing states, even though those same polls show Romney winning independent voters by significant margins. Those results make sense only if enormous numbers of voters are signing up as Democrats. But is there any evidence of any such trend? Not at all; the evidence is entirely to the contrary. Hugh Hewitt, among others, has been talking about these data: Voter registration in the Buckeye State is down by 490,000 people from four...
