On April 25, Gregory Despres arrived at the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood. U.S. customs agents confiscated the weapons and fingerprinted Despres. Then they let him into the United States. The following day, a gruesome scene was discovered in Despres' hometown of Minto, New Brunswick: The decapitated body of a 74-year-old country musician named Frederick Fulton on Fulton's kitchen floor. His head was in a pillowcase under a kitchen table. His common-law wife was discovered stabbed...

SCHAPELLE Corby's face crumpled in anguish and her family screamed abuse yesterday as she was found guilty of drug smuggling and jailed for 20 years. Pandemonium broke out in and around the Bali courtroom as the judges' verdict sank in. Corby's parents and sister, in the front row, realised before she did what the lead judge was saying – and erupted in fury. "You took the word of a liar . . . these judges will never sleep . . . Schapelle, you will come home.We will bring you home," her mother, Rosleigh Rose, screamed. Outside, Indonesians applauded as Corby's...

'Oddball rodent' in Laos takes scientists by surprise By John Noble Wilford The New York Times THURSDAY, MAY 12, 2005 They live in the forests and limestone outcrops of Laos. With long whiskers, stubby legs and a long, furry tail, they are rodents but unlike any seen before by wildlife scientists. They are definitely not rats or squirrels, only vaguely like a guinea pig or a chinchilla. And they often show up in Laotian outdoor markets being sold for food. There, visiting scientists came upon the animals and determined that they represented a rare find: an entire new family of...

Good Friday, the holiest day of the Christian year, was dominated yesterday by religious leaders comparing the suffering of Jesus Christ to the impending death of brain damaged Floridian Terri Schiavo.Evangelical Protestant and Catholic clergy alike drew parallels between the plight of Ms. Schiavo, now on her eighth day without food and water, and the last hours of Jesus. 'The mother Mary [Schindler] and friends are standing helplessly by', said one of Florida's leading clerics, the Rev. D. James Kennedy of the 10,000 member Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale.'The courts have condemned an innocent person to death by...

Texas longhorn If you ever have to “grab a bull by the horns” try a Texas longhorn. Considering that my first post was critical of SF Chronicle's depiction of USMC General Mattis – but somehow got into a vanity section – I wouldn’t be surprised that this too gets reclassified the same way. According to some members here, I invited the Wrath of Gods upon myself on account of: a) being new – not knowing the ropes b) having posted a vanity as my first article c) me being a pink, pro-communist, liberal threat to security of the United States...

WASHINGTON — With a speech that focused on providing contraceptives to poor women but added a notable tip of the hat to abstinence education, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (search) recently drew a gale of speculation — positive and negative — over whether she is anticipating a 2008 presidential run. "She is one of many people after the election trying to build a broader audience — reaching across differences," said Marie Wilson, president of the White House Project (search), a non-profit advocacy group promoting more women leaders. "As a party leader, that's her job. Will it make her more interesting as...

Abu Masab al-Zarqawi may have already been captured, this according to a source who contacted NewsJerks.com. The source said “Iraqi forces have captured Abu Masab al-Zarqawi and several of his high level associates.” The source contacted NewsJerks.com on January 20th of this year, several days before the announcement of the capture of Zarqawi’s top lieutenants. The source gave the news satire site three sources, form CNN, NSA, and the CIA,...

We hope Secretary of State Colin Powell was privately embarrassed when, two days into a catastrophic disaster that hit 12 of the world's poorer countries and will cost billions of dollars to meliorate, he held a press conference to say that America, the world's richest nation, would contribute $15 million. That's less than half of what Republicans plan to spend on the Bush inaugural festivities.

I haven’t heard much from the media about John Kerry’s huge gaffe in last night’s debate when he left Poland out of the list of allies who joined the United States in the liberation of Iraq. This is an especially egregious gaffe since Kerry is touting himself as someone who can bring a "real" coalition together. President Bush picked right up on it and pointed out Kerry had left out Poland. I thought it was very reminiscent of the second Presidential debate in 1976 between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. "Ford's Remarks Startle Europeans; Poles Among the Most Bemused" Washington...

The Associated Press Published: May 19, 2003 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The California Assembly on Monday called for Rep. Howard Coble to resign as chair of a key House subcommittee because of his comments about the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. During a Feb. 4 radio show, Coble appeared to justify the internment by saying it was for Japanese-Americans' own protection. The North Carolina Republican heads the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. "We were at war," Coble said. "For many of these Japanese-Americans, it wasn't safe for them to be on the street." Monday's vote...

The following was posted on a Yahoo Finance Message Board: I received this from a friend: To nobody's surprise there were protesters today in DC. They attempted to disrupt the metro system and block the Key Bridge, a leading artery into DC from Northern Virginia. I got hosed twice because I come in from Northern Virginia on the metro and it is raining hard which makes traffic worse any way. My commute was long and arduous and only caused further resentment for protesters (but that isn't the point of this thread). Anyway, I'll get to the point. I got off...

The American republic died at Appomattox in 1865, replaced by a national government that has gradually evolved into an empire in a permanent state of war. Most of us don't pay much attention to such stuff as history and perspective. Certainly the news media don't. Nevertheless, there are consequences of living in a war state, both to our own individual freedom and to our pocketbooks. This past week, President Bush made a big deal about signing a military authorization bill with a $30 billion increase. Here we are, 12 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and without a...
