It’s really quite remarkable, how much more energy-efficient everything is these days. Our houses are built to higher standards; our fridges use a fraction of the power they used to, our cars get better mileage — yet we are using more energy per capita than we ever have. I am loath to bring up good old Stanley Jevons here. His theory, also known as the rebound effect, was that if things become more efficient, we use more of them. Even as our houses get more efficient, they get bigger and we fill them with more stuff, pretty much negating the...

We might think of state supported health care as an innovation of the 20th century, but it's a much older tradition than that. In fact, texts from a village dating back to Egypt's New Kingdom period, about 3,100-3,600 years ago, suggest that in ancient Egypt there was a state-supported health care network designed to ensure that workers making the king's tomb were productive. Dear Cecil:I've been waiting for autonomous cars to become a reality. But I’m wondering how much revenue will be lost when there are no more speeding tickets, traffic violations, parking violations, or probably quite a few other kinds of fines that I haven't even considered. How much money will state and local governments lose when traffic tickets become a thing of the past?— Jeff Grippe, White Plains, New YorkCecil replies:What I’m wondering is why you’re even thinking about this. Driverless cars may well reshape the urban world — for one thing, autonomous car-sharing could wipe out taxis, limos, and Ubers...

[Summary: Public schools are crippled by an abundance of counterproductive ideas.] -- Sugar is sweet and fun to eat. But too much of it will kill you, just as having sugar in the gas tank will damage your car. We see the same contradiction in education. All new ideas are sold to the public as tasty treats and nutritious as well. In fact, they invariably turn out to be poisonous. Our Education Establishment seems to operate “labs” every bit as destructive as meth labs. Let’s call these laboratories “sugar labs.” That’s where our top-level educators concoct the too-sweet gimmicks that...

Rational discussions about National Socialism are often hard to come by. The word “Nazi” has become a vitriolic buzzword that only the Left has a license to use, especially against conservatives where many on the so-called political right are metaphorically and wrongfully characterized as present day fascists. All too many have since precluded that Nazism was a right wing Christian racist capitalist movement of some sort, even though the very name, the National Socialist Worker’s Party, betrays that presumption ...

The guy who was rude to him on the Tube.He didn’t get the job.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- A police officer accidentally shot his sergeant after firing at a pit bull inside a Brooklyn apartment building. When creating a profile, users can specify their preferred method of THC ingestion, their energy level while baked, and various pastimes that hold their interest. Typical features needed to reach parity with competitors — such as person-to-person text chat — are of course included....

On March 4 the U.S. Supreme Court will hear King v. Burwell, the case challenging health insurance-premium subsidies for those who buy their insurance on the 37 federal exchanges. (...) First, Congress could extend the subsidies until the end of 2015, and allow people to keep those subsidies that they have already received. This would avoid disruption in health care and in insurance markets, whose terms are set months ahead. Second, Congress could create a new temporary state-based option for continued health insurance coverage beginning in 2016 until it could craft a long-term solution. (...)

Seven out of ten Americans say that despite his apology, suspended “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams should resign from NBC for repeatedly lying on national television, according to a nationwide poll conducted last weekend by McLaughlin & Associates. The poll was commissioned by the Media Research Center (MRC), which is the parent company of CNSNews.com. “This poll confirms that the American people no longer trust Brian Williams to report the news,” said MRC president Brent Bozell. “This is no longer about Brian Williams’ reputation. This is about NBC News having any chance of being a credible source of news.” …
