Citing safety, the Trump administration on Thursday proposed rolling back car-mileage standards, backing away from years of government efforts to cut Americans’ trips to the gas station and reduce unhealthy, climate-changing tailpipe emissions.
If the proposed rule becomes final, it could roil the auto industry as it prepares for new model years and weaken one of the federal government’s chief weapons against climate change — regulating emissions from cars and other vehicles. The result, opponents say, will be dirtier air and more pollution-related illness and death.
The proposal itself estimates it could cost tens of thousands of jobs — auto workers who deal with making vehicles more fuel efficient.
The administration also said it wants to revoke an authority granted to California under the half-century-old Clean Air Act to set its own, tougher mileage standards. California and 16 other states already have filed suit to block any change in the fuel efficiency rules.
“The EPA has handed decision making over to the fossil fuel lobbyists … the flat-Earthers, the climate change deniers,” said Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey. …

I do think we'll finally see significant improvements in electric automobiles once dry-electrode lithium-ion batteries enter production on a large scale and everyone agrees on a single standard for electric car charging in terms of connectors and voltages. In short, an improved SAE J1772 Combined Charging System (CCS) connector that can handle higher DC voltages so it can replace the Tesla proprietary Supercharger connector.

A base 1965 Chevy C-10 pickup was 187” long.
By comparison, a ‘65 Impala was about 213” long.
I’ve had several of those little pickups (S-10, D50, two Colorado’s & a small Nissan). The way I drive and haul stuff, I seldom got up to 20 mpg. More like 15 or so. The Nissan with a full load at 65 mph would get 5 - 7 mpg.
My newest is a 2018 full size F150 that gets 20 easy, it’s comfortable, hauls larger loads and has all the power I’d ever want.
Never again will I have a small truck.
CAFE Standards is why most of us can’t afford a real car.
I always got 25+ MPG on my 1995 Toyota pickup and my 2001 Ranger still gets it.
Notice that they recycled Obama’s rhetoric, “dirtier air”.
Really screw with the left. Offer tax breaks for buying electric and flex fuel cars. Watch them bitch as they try to reason away taking the tax break while. complaining about the climate. The cars that they will buy offers a counter to buying a Ford 350.
