A historic deja vu: Phokaians taking civilization to Marseille

Foca will be linked to Marselle in a special project to revisit the history: A Turkish crew will travel the route from the Izmir district to the French city in the next two months, just as their ancestors did centuries ago. Building a replica of an ancient vessel, the group is set to sail to Marseille in as conditions as true to those in 600 B.C. as possible.

The replica of an ancient vessel is retracing the historic route from Foca off the coast of Turkey to Marseille off France some 2,600 years later.

The project "A Journey into History: Izmir-Phokaia-Marseille" is to recreate the passage of the ship named Kybele, which has been built exactly the same way as the ancient vessels dating back to 600 B.C., and rediscovered in recent excavations.

By using an exact replica and traveling the same 1,700-nautical mile route, the project aims to recreate what the sailors would have endured on the trip the first time around. The ship aims to sail for 10 hours a day and will call into 60 different ports before reaching Marseille on July 1.

The captain of the Kybele, Osman Erkut, who is also the chairman of the foundation behind this project, the 360 Degree Historical Research Association, said that he and his crew would set to sail to Marseille in as conditions as true to those in 600 B.C. as possible.

And thus began the first instances of state sanctioned infanticide.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!

Their ancestors? Turks didn’t infest Asia Minor until about 800 years ago. The Phokaians must be turning over in their graves.

The inhabitants of Phokaia are quite clear that their ancestors came from places far to the east, arriving in long ornately carved boats propelled by oars and a single sail. Yet the Phokaians possess no boats and had no knowledge of the winds before Greek traders came among them. They say their skill in making boats was taken from them when a great monster arose from the sea...

Didn’t the Phonecians pre-date allof this? May be that is where the technology came from.

The Phokaians were famous navigators, employing 50-oared vessels. They traded with Naukratis in Egypt and, in association with Miletos, they founded Lampsakos, at the N entrance to the Dardanelles, and Amisos (Samsun) on the Black Sea. But Phokaia's major colonies were in the W Mediterranean, especially Elea (Velia) on the W coast of Lucania in S Italy, Alalia in Corsica, Massalia (Marseilles) in France, and Emporion (Ampurias) in Spain.

The city wall mentioned by Herodotos (1.163) has disappeared. It was a defense against the Persians, and financed by King Argonthonius of Tartessos in Andalusia. In 546 B.C., however, the Persians captured Sardis and soon devastated most of the cities in W Asia Minor, including Phokaia. Many of the inhabitants emigrated to their Mediterranean colonies. Although some of them seem to have returned, there was no revival of the golden age of the first half of the 6th c. The Phokaians could send only three ships to the battle of Lade in 494; but owing to their naval skill, the command of the entire Hellenic fleet was given to Dionysios of Phokaia.
