Asthma patients react even to low concentrations of some allergens with severe inflammation of the bronchi. This is also accompanied by increased mucus production, which makes breathing even more difficult. A central role here is played by cells of the innate immune system, which were only discovered a few years ago and are called Innate Lymphoid Cells (ILC). They perform an important protective function in the lungs by regenerating damaged mucous membranes. For this purpose they produce inflammatory messengers from the group of cytokines, which stimulate division of the mucosal cells and promote mucus production.
This mechanism is normally very useful: It allows the body to quickly repair damage caused by pathogens or harmful substances. The mucus then transports the pathogens out of the bronchial tubes and protects the respiratory tract against re-infection. "With asthma, however, the inflammatory reaction is much stronger and longer than normal," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Christoph Wilhelm. The consequences are extreme breathing difficulties, which can even be life-threatening.
Rapid reproduction
The ILCs multiply rapidly during this process and produce large amounts of proinflammatory cytokines. Scientists hope that if their division could be slowed down, it may be possible to bring the excessive reaction under control. In fact, the results now published point in exactly this direction.
But what happens if cells are forced to use these fatty acids elsewhere? To answer this question, the researchers put asthmatic mice on a diet that contained mainly fats, but hardly any carbohydrates or proteins. With this ketogenic diet, the cell metabolism changes: The cells now get the energy they need from burning fat.
As a consequence, the division activity of the ILCs in the rodents fed a special diet decreased -- dramatically

Ping, sir.
I can personally attest to this. My asthma went away after 30 days on keto.
A couple questions to help asthma sufferers:
1. How long have you been symptom free?
2. Do you keep an inhaler, still?
3. Can it still be triggered by pollution?
Thanks!
I have been symptom free for about 18 months.
I still keep an inhaler but I have not used it at all since I started keto.
I have discontinued my other drugs that I took for asthma (with my doctors approval).
Other observations. I have a knee that would bother me. As long as I eat keto it feels fine. If I cheat for a week or so, it starts hurting. I understand may not be related but it seems to be.
Forgot to answer last question. I have had zero triggers since starting keto.
8 years free from asthma after initiating low carb high fat diet. No drugs, inhaler or symptoms.
Congrats. I am a big believer in this diet.
Wow! Did you have mild, moderate, or severe asthma?
That is an amazing thing to hear. I need to tell my friends this actually works in a non-study environment.
Yeah I’ve been under 10 grams of carb/day since 4/1/2020.
The first couple of days are bumpy but after that you feel much better, more energy and need a heckva lot less sleep.
I also have moderate asthma and knee pain.
I haven’t noticed that I can breath better yet or less knee pain, but it’s only been a couple of weeks and overall feel much better.

A second point is that fat moves fat-----when dieters on low-fat diets plateau, some doctors tell
them to judiciously add fats to their diet in order to resume the weight loss.
You need to get fats and proteins from your diet. Your body can produce the necessary carbs without you having to eat carbs.
I agree. Ive been doing keto for 14 months. Lost the asthma, gone is hypoglecia, no migraines. Lost The 40 lbs I gained over ten years. And I lost that weight in 2 months! Its easy to maintain this low carb diet. No seed oils. No rice no bread not as much fruit. Fruit has been engineered to basically be a fructose delivery method. I drink a small bit of wine 2 times a week. And all the ribs, steak, fish lobster, crab, butter and dairy, chicken bacon and pork that I desire. And NO sugar. We use monk fruit powder and eritherol.
Agree. And you dont need glucose. Your body makes it in the liver and uses what is makes for energy.

I’ve been on keto about 3 years. Lost a lot of weight, but not as much as I need to lose. Recently I have been struggling with staying on the diet, and I know I’ve been taking in too many calories, even if not carbs.
I have inhalers but I hardly ever use them. My asthma acts up if I don’t take antihistamines during allergy seasons, and when I get a respiratory virus. I have had some issues with asthma even since I’ve been doing keto.
I was really sick all of February and had to go on antibiotics and prednisone twice. Was this Covid-19? I don’t know. I had the worst dry cough I can ever remember having, and had a chest xray to make sure I didn’t have pneumonia. If I did have the virus, would I have had a more severe case if I had not been on the keto diet? That, too, I have no way of knowing. My daughter thinks so. She is also doing keto.
So, my asthma has not gone away, but it could have improved. Guess I really don’t know for sure.
I have been a dieter for most of my adult life (now in my late sixties), and keto is the only diet I have been able to stick to for any length of time. Just about all my numbers have improved except cholesterol, and I couldn’t care less about that. I think that’s bogus.
