March 2, 2005 -- Her happiness doomed her. Slain actress Nicole duFresne had a smile on her face as she strolled a Lower East Side street after a night of partying — and it was her smile, and those of her friends, that made them targets, according to a stunning new confession.

DuFresne's happiness was like grit in the eye of cheerleader-turned-murder defendant Ashley Evans, who strolled the streets with a pack of friends.

So Evans singled the group out — ultimately, for murder.

"They were really happy looking, and that made me mad," Evans, 18, told cops of that catalytic moment. She pointed the two couples out to her shiftless, parolee boyfriend, Rudy Fleming, 19.

And they knew, with near 100% accuracy, that they were unarmed in the gun-control heaven of NYC.

DuFresne would die where she fell, in the arms of musician and playwright Jeffrey Sparks, her fiancé. "I wish she never pointed to us," Sparks said.

The typical liberal "I was born a victim" response. He doesn't say, "I wish I was armed," or even "I wish I could have stopped him from shooting my fiancée." He doesn't even say, "I wish this scumbag parolee had still been in prison where they belonged."

I don't want to castigate this guy too badly; after all, he just lost his fiancé. But it's important to realize the mindset that allows criminals like this to get back on the street, and also allows politicians to disarm us and prevent us from defending ourselves.

I was going to say thank God they were 18.

But then I found that the NY state court of appeals had struck down the state death penalty last year.

I have noted in my long life that the most enviable possession in some's eyes is a happy disposition and life. The narcissistic person cannot tolerate another persons optimism, happiness, self satisfaction and friends. They hate the fact that some can love and they can't.

When you are on the wrong end of a gun it's best to choose your words and actions very carefully no matter how much you have been drinking.

One thing I have noted with women and tell me if you think this happens in your world. They bond by bitching and none can tolerate a woman or girl who doesn't bitch. It is as if they are all reassuring each other "you got nothing to worry about, I am worse off than you". This killer seemed to have taken it to the extreme.
