The Sept. 18 Molly Ivins column lauded former, and now deceased, Texas Gov. Ann Richards. Ivins wrote: "Annie told the Texas Legislature that if it passed a right-to-carry law, she would veto it. They did and she did." Yes, Richards vetoed the law.
A few weeks later in Texas, at a Luby's Restaurant, a crazed gunman shot 17 or 19 Texans who were disarmed by Richards' veto, but the same veto did not disarm the crazed gunman. Ivins makes a joke about Richards saying that a Texas woman wouldn't be able to find a handgun in her handbag.
Well, there was a woman in Luby's that fateful day who could have found her handgun, but her gun was locked in her car's trunk in the parking lot, per then-Texas law and in accord with Richards' veto.
That woman later became a Texas legislator and pushed through right-to-carry for Texans.
As of today, 38 states permit "shall-issue" handgun carry permits for honest citizens. Texas is among them. In every shall-issue state, the crime rate went down after the legislation was signed. All the criminals are armed, but they are not sure about their intended victims in shall-issue states and what could be more fair?

Democrats should take a note from this. Being an anti-gunner cost them a govenorship and the Presidency for 8 years.

She was an awful governor. The Insurance Department was an absolute disaster while she was in office.
It was around this time when I became more politically aware and knew exactly where I stood on the issues.
Another memorable part of Richards' rancid legacy was her meeting with Hillary! in Austin shortly before Richards allowed the Army to use tanks on the Branch Davidian church in Waco. Hillary! and Billy Jeff were impatient that the stand-off had dragged on so long. Setting fire to the building and burning 20 little children to death was their solution to the problem. Some legacy, Ma Richards. And a good thing to remember when people try to convince you that Hillary! would be a fine president.
Here in Houston if you leave your house without packing, you are taking a big chance.

I've seen a documentary about that woman who was in Luby's who later got the right to carry law passed. It seemed like she dedicated her whole life to passing that law. Not sure if her mother was killed or what, but the bad guy made a powerful impression on her.
Richards and people like her are put out there only as fronts to entertain the people while the real work is being done in secret behind the scenes. But gimmicks only work so long and then they get old and tired; especially when Americans find out they are being scammed again and again.
That it did. I don't think the Dims will ever learn.
Being in the middle of a shoot-out will do that for you.

Wasn't there an arsonal of guns and ammunition that the Dividians were going to use to blow up Texans. I believe that the only thing they could do was burn down the house. Remember this was a wacko cult. They did not listen to reason and yes unfortunately children died but the althernative would have been more deaths. It was a war and casualties happen. I was not as political as I am now when this happened so maybe some facts are CNN but not sure. I watched CNN occasionally but remember being glad that the house finally was burnt down and saved the U.S. from that group. Plus didn't they kill each other first anyway and put purple blankets on themselves or something. I know maybe I was nuts back then...not sure.
