The last Republican voted into the seat was Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. He was Nixon’s VEEP running mate in 1960, I believe.

He was elected in 1946...just to give some perspective to the enormity of what happened last night.

It's worth noting that Lodge was a Lt. Colonel, just as Scott Brown is.

Republicans understand patriotism.

I had a Nixon/Lodge poster in my bedroom when I was a youngster.

1946 was a Republican year and the GOP won control of Congress. Richard Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge were part of the 46' class elected in reaction to the excesses of New Deal Democratic rule.

No, Brooke was not in the same “class”...remember, the Senate is divided into three “classes”...so that 1/3 of the Senate (roughly) is up for re-election every 2 years.

I am referring to the same “class seat” held by The Swimmer, JFK, and a couple of interim ‘rats (Kirk and some other clown...Ben Smith, I think).

From what I can tell he was the last of the Cabot-Lodge’s to hold public office. Probably too much to wish a similiar thing would happen with the Kennedy’s.

The last one was Brooke. There are no class 1 and 2 senatorial seats. It is an artificial construct made up to ignore Brooke.

If memory serves: Lodge’s seat went to JFK in 1952 or there about. Funny, the percentage breakdown was in JFK’s favor almost like the Brown/Coakley percentage breakdown.

Then, I think, JFK went to the Presidency and Teddy Kennedy was appointed to JFK’s unexpired term around 1960-62. Teddy held this seat for something like 47 years.

Sounds like a meritocracy and nepotism in Massachusetts. But so history goes.

Now it’s a Republican seat again with Brown’s win ... at least maybe till the November 2010 Mid-terms. We shall see how the pendulum swings then.

So both Massachusetts Senate seats are up for election in 2012? Kerry and Brown.

I always though they straddled elections 2 years apart.

Kerry’s seat isn’t up until 2014. He was reelected in 2008.

JFK installed is college roomate Smith to hold the Senate seat (two years) until Ted was old enough to be a senator.

It became Ted’s seat in 1962.
