LODGE, Henry Cabot, Jr., (great-great-great grandson of George Cabot, great-great grandson of John Davis of Massachusetts, great-great grandson of Elijah Hunt Mills, grandson of Henry Cabot Lodge, brother of John Davis Lodge, and nephew of Augustus P. Gardner), a Senator from Massachusetts; born in Nahant, Essex County, Mass., on July 5, 1902; graduated from Middlesex School, Concord, Mass., in 1920 and from Harvard University in 1924; engaged in newspaper work 1924-1931; member, Massachusetts State legislature 1933-1936; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1936; reelected in 1942, and served from January 3, 1937, until his resignation on February 3, 1944, to go on active duty during the Second World War in the United States Army; the first United States Senator since the Civil War to leave the Senate in order to go to war; served in the Mediterranean and European Theaters, rising to lieutenant colonel; again elected to the United States Senate in 1946 and served from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1953; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1952; United States representative to the United Nations from February 1953 until his resignation September 3, 1960; unsuccessful Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1960; Ambassador to Republic of Vietnam 1963-1964; again appointed Ambassador to Vietnam 1965-1967; United States Ambassador at Large 1967-1968; Ambassador to Germany 1968-1969; appointed by President Richard Nixon to serve as head of the American delegation to the Vietnam peace negotiations in Paris, France, and served until December 1969; appointed by President Nixon to serve as special envoy to the Vatican 1970-1977; died in Beverly, Mass., February 27, 1985; interment in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass.
The last Republican voted into the seat was Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. He was Nixon’s VEEP running mate in 1960, I believe.
He was elected in 1946...just to give some perspective to the enormity of what happened last night.
Republicans understand patriotism.
I had a Nixon/Lodge poster in my bedroom when I was a youngster.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find only things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelogus
No, Brooke was not in the same “class”...remember, the Senate is divided into three “classes”...so that 1/3 of the Senate (roughly) is up for re-election every 2 years.
I am referring to the same “class seat” held by The Swimmer, JFK, and a couple of interim ‘rats (Kirk and some other clown...Ben Smith, I think).
From what I can tell he was the last of the Cabot-Lodge’s to hold public office. Probably too much to wish a similiar thing would happen with the Kennedy’s.
The last one was Brooke. There are no class 1 and 2 senatorial seats. It is an artificial construct made up to ignore Brooke.
If memory serves: Lodge’s seat went to JFK in 1952 or there about. Funny, the percentage breakdown was in JFK’s favor almost like the Brown/Coakley percentage breakdown.
Then, I think, JFK went to the Presidency and Teddy Kennedy was appointed to JFK’s unexpired term around 1960-62. Teddy held this seat for something like 47 years.
Sounds like a meritocracy and nepotism in Massachusetts. But so history goes.
Now it’s a Republican seat again with Brown’s win ... at least maybe till the November 2010 Mid-terms. We shall see how the pendulum swings then.
New Hampshire Primary - 1964 - Henry Cabot Lodge (35.5%) Barry M. Goldwater* (22.3%) Nelson A. Rockefeller (21.0%) Richard M. Nixon (16.8%)
Brown’s term expires in 2012.
and?
So both Massachusetts Senate seats are up for election in 2012? Kerry and Brown.
I always though they straddled elections 2 years apart.
Kerry’s seat isn’t up until 2014. He was reelected in 2008.
JFK installed is college roomate Smith to hold the Senate seat (two years) until Ted was old enough to be a senator.
It became Ted’s seat in 1962.

Kerry’s next.
