Diet soda in 'fat' shocker; Expands girth, hikes blood sugar: studies
New York Post ^ | June 30, 2011 | BILL SANDERSON AND GRANT JUNKIE

Maybe next they'll conclude that water makes you fat. Diet soda -- which has nearly no nutritional value -- dangerously bloats waistlines and might boost blood-sugar levels, according to new studies. People who drink diet soda experienced a 70 percent greater increase in waist circumference over a decade than non-users, a study by the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio found. "The more diet sodas people drank, the more their waists grew," researcher Sharon Fowler told The Post. "For people who drink two or more diet sodas a day, their waist increase was five times those who drank no diet sodas -- almost two inches."

These idiots dont know the difference between correlation and cause and effect, or they act like they dont. Maybe people with diet problems tend to drink diet soda.

Probably because the people drinking the diet soda were washing down a couple of Big Macs on a regular basis.

This isn’t new news. But yes, sadly this study probably used millions of dollars to come to the same conclusion that Paris Hilton did years ago when she said she never ordered diet soda because only fat people drink diet soda.

I want to super-size my fries, so I’ll have a diet soda to make up for it. ;)

It’s not the soda itself. It’s the other stuff they eat with it.

People who drink diet soda experienced a 70 percent greater increase in waist circumference over a decade than non-users, a study by the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio found.

This is because the cephalic phase of appetite control senses sweetness and signals the body that food is on the way. Time goes by and the food doesn't arrive and triggers an increase in appetite resulting in overeating that results in obesity.

Hey, got a question for all those diet soda drinkers:
Does smoking, for example, a Marlboro Light give you less chance for cancer than smoking a regular Marlboro? =.=

believe me, I love my diet Pepsi, but this study rings true...there has been talk over the years that whatever they put in diet soda, it still raises blood sugar, and increases apetite....

I certainly haven't lost weight drinking diet soda, or skim milk for that matter...

my husband has switched to regular Coke....and a few weeks ago we switched to regular whole milk, after reading on FR that they have additives in skim milk....

Because there is a correlation, does not imply causality.

For example, I have found that wearing XXL size clothes is highly correlated with being obese. Must be something in the material the clothes are made of, or maybe they spray some “big company evil” chemicals secretly on the clothes to make people fat.

Nope, It turns out that people overweight TEND to consume “diet” sodas, in a vain attempt to loose weight. Not suprisingly, by “gaming” the situation (rather than reduce their intake of “food”) they continue to get fatter......

What’s next, a federal study on elephant repellants? I saw a guy blowing a horn one time, and I asked him why he was blowing this horn out in the middle of the woods.....he smiled, and said, it scares away elephants! I said he was silly, that it didn’t work.....he just replied.....seen any elephants lately?

I bet that guy has a Gubmint grant now.....On Global Warming probably....

well- now we know why they were really, really fat- the diet soda!!

That’s brilliant. But we need more evidence.

There is a $6,000,000 grant available for you to conduct more research.

Some scientists speculate artificial sweeteners trigger appetite, or inhibit brain cells that signal the feeling of being full.

I read that in a health newsletter in the late '80s. I have told a number of diet soda drinkers that but they shrug their shoulders and hoist another diet soda.

I’ve heard that the sweet taste of diet soda could be causing the secretion of insulin (as though sugar were actually entering the bloodstream), causing the body to store fat. It wouldn’t surprise me if these studies had merit.

We haven't counted calories or monitored our weight since we switched from “health food” to real food. We have continued our normal exercise routines and avoid HFCS and hydrogenated oils. That means we cook a lot of our own food, which is also much healthier. We drink whole milk, eat dark chocolate, and indulge in red wine every now and then. My in-law’s kitchen is filled with no-fat, low-fat, low-cal, sugar-free processed foods that have ingredients lists miles long. They both constantly battle their weight while dipping carrot sticks in fat-free, MSG riddled ranch dressing.
